Look on google on how to add a IPX protocol to your network connection. Then start a game and choose lan. That is, if your playing a lan game. if your going on Bnet, it should work from the beginning
Your could try using a port tester (on the person's computer creating the game, so if you create the game and he's the one joining, you should be the one with the ports forwarded) such as : http://www.canyouseeme.org/ (to use this type in any number between 6112-6119 in for the port number)
if that doesn't pass your port isn't forwarded properly. For help of forwarding go here: http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
and choose your router make and model, then choose the game (Diablo) and it should have router specific instructions. Has nothing to do with using virtual drives, Thats what I use on my computer.
