And low gear dependency is how the game suppose to work imo. In D3 a single weapon upgrade might double your DPS. It's pretty ridicolous how you can faceroll the content (normal, nm, hell) by going to the AH and spending like 50k gold. In D3 gear plays the game for you and for that i can't touch that game any longer ( i will problably only come back when they revamp the whole gear system, if they do so).
TL2 gear dependecy is around the level of D2, whos the big referential. If you get good gear you kill monsters faster and tank more hits, but you will not be a powerhouse (unless you have really insane gear).
In the end it's matter of taste. I think the focus of the game should be character development so the stats you place and skills you get should play a bigger role then the random loot you drop. Other people enjoy the trade aspect of the game more, so a loot based game will reward then better. Personaly i already make my money by trading so i feel no reason to do it on an game...

"In time the hissing of her sanity
Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what is clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give" - Opeth
