For the record, I don't care about the beta. This has nothing to do with getting a beta. And I've clearly stated my reasons for wanting the measure. So if you actually go back and read what I wrote you'll see I could seriously give a shit if new members won keys or not.
If any other long time member does have a problem with that alone, then yeah, I would think that's silly also.
All I was saying is I don't think it will stop the trolls from trolling for beta.
I'm relatively new here so maybe I have no real right to comment, but that's just the way I see it.
The purpose was less to stop trolls and just keep the D3 section from being so inundated. Even if people aren't posting something about the beta, they still impulsively create new threads all the time to which there are at least a few devoted to the exact same topic.
The fact that people have been creating new threads recently all about the beta has only highlighted an already existing problem of new users coming along, making a thread, and often times that thread having a doppelganger.
Wouldn't you be pissed if someone had told you that you couldn't post until a certain quota had been reached? As if your possible threads were less valuable because of an arbitrary number?
The number wasn't completely arbitrary at all. There were plenty of reason given for even just 10 posts. And no, I wouldn't be pissed at all. I've been on other forums with the same restrictions and it was perfectly sensible a measure.
I just don't get why you wouldn't come right out and explain one's reasoning for not instituting such a change. So then what's the purpose of this section? That people might make suggestions and just hope that the staff are reading them? I mean, I'm fine with the logic, but why keep people guessing? Why not address the issue as it's been presented to you in the thread? Go ahead and delete this post too if you like.
Well I think a lot of people have gotten used to things just fine. And putting this restriction on new users would simply improve things. The D3 discussion area would become a lot less inundated since that's where almost all new users post their threads. Accepting the fact that we're likely to get a flood of newcomers at the release of D3, as you've stated, is all the more reason to implement this kind of measure.
On topic: Perhaps not exactly a cheerful thought for some but... Isn't this rather a preview for when Diablo III gets released - heh - and we'll have a flood of newcomers then, anyway? If a person can't adapt with having the DF community becoming much larger (and less experienced accordingly), then... I don't know if anything could satisfy said person.
That's your standard for satisfaction? Whether one can adapt to the DF community becoming much larger (and less experienced accordingly)?
Adaptation is fine and good. But you don't have to accept everything that sucks purely on the tenets of adaptation. What was proposed as a solution is perfectly sensible. Merely deny new users the ability to post new threads unless they've achieved a certain number of posts. Even as low as 10 or 20 would make a huge difference.
Nah, people keep attributing it to the beta contest. It was before then even. Just browse the D3 section at any given time. Look at older threads and newer threads in that section.
"Who is the first NPC you will talk to?"
"Will you go left or right when you first start the game? Discuss!"
"How many monsters will you kill in the first ten minutes of the game?"
"Do you think my mustache tickles women when I kiss them?"
Even a 10 post minimum would be sufficient. Like I said, many people register on impulse cause they want to create a thread. As far as regulating behavior, mods really can't do that. Or at least, usually people are gonna do whatever they want. Some people learn their lessons, but most don't even stick around long enough for it to even matter.
And yeah, overall we do have a lot less spam and flaming than there used to be. Before D3 was announced people didn't have that to occupy themselves. Of course, there were shitloads of D3 announcement conjecture threads and that definitely got annoying but it was nothing compared to the kind of duplicate threads we have no. Especially with all this nauseating beta crap. I mean, I've played the beta and I wish I could express just how underwhelming it is. I've tried anyway. People really, really aren't missing anything. Some may think that's just easy for me to say since I've played it. I've written a lot about how I feel about the beta though and I'm not gonna reiterate it all here.
Our mods are actually pretty complacent, rather lazy. Sorry guys, but you kind of are.
And yeah, new users are very impulsive and it's annoying. If you think about it, a lot of users will register just for the sake of creating a new thread. And there are tons of duplicate threads as a result, but few seem to care anymore. I think from an admin point of view, and I could easily be wrong, none of it matters anymore because what they care about is the site getting lots of hits. As many hits as possible. More threads, more hits. Give new users more freedom to create content, and thus again, more hits.
Many of the new users who create threads also have a high rate of fading out pretty quickly. I've seen tons of new users come and go after they contributed their one time payment of two cents. Get it? Their two cents.
