the reason i suggest shovel is because i remember reading somewhere that in WWI soldiers often didnt use bayonets, but shovels.
but there is a quick question i have about zombies... how strong are their bones and muscles? i assume not to great, since they are made of decaying flesh. if so, then a good swing with a baseball bat to a zombies head would knock off their head
Yeah, those were much smaller shovels than just your typical dirt shovels. But you're right, they did use those in trench warfare. The reason being is it was considered too cruel to stab your opponent with a knife cause unless you were stabbing them repeatedly it could take a long time for them to die.
With the shovel they could just take of their head really quick or at least dig it into their neck.
As far as a zombie's bones are concerned, in a highly infected area there are likely to be lots of newly made zombies around, so their bone density and strength are still going to be about as strong as anyone else's. But after time, as the elements take their toll on a zombie, sure, I imagine their bones would weaken significantly.

actually soldiers did not use bayonets because the blade could get stuck in the abdomen, and then you have a dying man stuck on your gun. but your reason also seems to be plausible.
I'm not talking about bayonets. They actually were issued knives for awhile before they changed it to hand held shovels. Using a bayonet attached to the end of your rifle would be pretty difficult to use anyway inside a narrow trench.
Bows are good. Silent, doesn't attract zombies. I wonder if you could easily extract an arrow from a human skull without breaking it...BRB.
I believe the machete really is the ultimate anti-zombie melee weapon. Though admittedly, your average non-warrior would have to develop some serious grip strength before being able to slice through a neck. Necessity is the best trainer, I suppose.

Well I have a 55% chance of survival but that would be higher or lower depending on current location and counting things such as fishing/hunting for food.
If I was in a situation where I knew I wouldn't last a week, I would set up a flame device to go off about 5 mins after I off myself so that I don't become one of them.

Yeah a good idea would be to kill yourself if u were surrounded. A .22 to the head would obliterate your brain so the virus would have no brain to infect.

I actually wouldn't try so much taking off a zombie's head with a machette. Remember that we just need to destroy enough of its brain. If it's a high quality machette (most run of the mill ones at the hardware store couldn't cut sliced ham and the metal is really cheap) then a really nice baseball bat swing to the forehead could get the brain pretty good. Or swinging straight down like you were chopping wood, that would definitely put that thing out of commission.
I'm not sure why you guys want to melee the zombies down. Is it because of ammo being scarce? If there are 300 zombies coming at you, you're gonna be pretty tired swinging your sword at them after a while.

If there are 300 zombies coming at you, or even two, it's really just best to try and run. We talk about melee combat for a couple of reasons: yes, bullets are finite; and the chances are pretty good there will be times where either you are unable to run, or it is feasible to do combat. It is feasible to do combat if you're in a fairly secure area and you are exterminating zombies as they come to you. Or you may be on the roof of a house surrounded by zombies and you need to take a few down in order to make your escape. Guns are marvelous, of course. But to be prepared, you really need to know what you're going to do if you don't have a gun and bullets. Also because to kill that zombie with a gun, you gotta destroy the brain. And unless you have extensive firearms training, this is much easier said than done.
I see a problem with booby traps. Any effort you make into setting them up, could just be better spend fortifying your fixed position. Like you said, a booby trap is unlikely to kill them. So why bother? All it really does is increase the likelihood of injury to yourself. And imagine if you stumbled upon a seemingly safe place to hold up. What if the previous occupant was thinking the same thing about traps? And what if that person either left in a hurry or was killed, but his traps remain?
Yes, a trap could maim, even possibly kill a zombie. But the payoff isn't really worth it. In a prolonged outbreak, you're always gonna have one of those last man on earth dudes who is living in his post-apocalyptic fantasy (sane or not) and thinks he is gonna be all clever setting up traps in the Wal-Mart or wherever he's hiding at. Some other survivors think they wanna go in their for supplies, and one of them gets a nail to the face. Not good.
Whatever you're killing zombies with, it needs to be as practical as possible for the sake of uncertainty. You don't know what situation you might be in or what tools or supplies you're gonna have. So why even think about traps? Unless...maybe you created a fortress for yourself that was well supplied and you're outside human problem in the form of raiders has become bigger than your zombie problem. That I could imagine.

That's true. I imagine just destroying the brain stem would do the job, which would take even less effort than cutting through skull.

A chainsaw and gas would be pretty nice.
The chainsaw would be SO awesome if I knew I was going to die anyways, or had no other options and no way out. Otherwise, no way. But damn, what a manly way to go.
I would definitely be sticking with my 22 most of the time before I ever dared get close enough to beat a zombie down melee style. You could EASILY carry over a thousand rounds in a backpack, so ammo conservation wouldn't be a huge priority for me.

What's great about a .22 is how plentiful its ammunition is. People love to just buy boxes of those rounds and go shooting telephone books round where I live. Raid a Smith & Edwards store and yeah, you could totally stuff your backpack with that ammo. So even if you don't penetrate the skull after the first round, at least you can be more liberal with your ammo use.

Was thinking more about booby trapping a temporary stronghold. And a board with nails in it is something pretty hard to fall for if you're breathing.
Something to keep the zombies at bay for a while until you get a better plan.
I don't know though, if your goal is just to keep the zombies at bay, I would make such construction efforts into wall building, destroying staircases, or heck, even build a moat. LOL
Simple booby traps can be useful however. Not necesarily traps that would kill, but that would alert you if someone enters the building. Such as a stack of cans next to a door, or a bottle on top of a door (so that if someone pushes he door open, the bottle will fall and shatter)

What about setting up some zombie traps? Maybe flat boards with some nails all hammered through. Some nails like this.
It for sure wouldn't kill anything but I imagine it may slow them a lot so you could get in some good melee shots.
Padding the doors and windows with something similar wouldn't be bad either. It would sure make smashing them down harder.
