If they end up running with ladders, it may very well be that almost nothing you are doing now is very productive or likely to give you a leg up.
They've said ladders are coming, which likely implies more or less hitting a big reset. Now it won't technically reset your paragon or stop you from saving 500000000000000000 radiant gems but all of that is useless if you want to play on whatever shiny ladder they make.
Now if they run with short ladder seasons that are treated more like events, kinda like what POE is doing, then there might be some dead time between events or a reason to play outside the ladders... However if it's closer to D2 type ladders in the months and years, then most of your attempts to save stuff for the future may very well be in vain and just cashing out before it gets announced is the only reasonable call for those with ludicrous amounts of in game wealth.

My 2 cents and food for though.
Ladders coming doesn't mean that everyone's characters are going to be ported to ladder. I'd prefer having a user choice of being able to have your character be either ladder or non.

Porting existing characters to ladder defeats the purpose of the ladder's existence. Most probably it will be like this: existing characters are marked as "non-ladder", when creating a new character you can create a ladder one or a non-ladder one, just like in DII.

Just to clarify, you won't be a "non-ladder" char at any point. The main ladder is most likely going to be paragon levels across your account. Seasonal Ladders (think 2-6 months long) will also be based on paragon levels, but they reset frequently. When the season ends your paragon experience is added to your softcore or hardcore paragon experience.
What we don't know is if there are seasonal ladder only items that are "BiS", if there will be time between seasons and if so how much? These things matter because it potentially gives you a reason to play "non-ladder" even if you have never played "non-ladder" in the past.
It's not exactly like D2 because there aren't going to be billions of duped sojs/hr's/hacked/classic items in d3. So it's not going to feel as mandatory to play the new season to have a good gaming experience. Even more so if they end up intentionally devaluing gold, current materials and gems.

Are you suggesting that there will only be ladder? That's what I'm gathering from the first paragraph of your post.

Yes. I am saying that there will be at least 1 permanent ladder for softcore and 1 for hardcore. These ladders will rank you based on your total paragon experience earned -current seasonal experience.
When the current seasonal ladder is over, your paragon experience earned for that season will be dumped into the perpetual paragon ladder. Again that is your total paragon experience earned- current seasonal experience. The total experience earned is obviously separated by region as well as hardcore and softcore.
Of course I'm basing this entirely off the dev post that says seasonal paragon experience will be dumped into total paragon experience at the end of every season. That + the separate strings for ladder and seasonal ladder.

I'd like that instead.

Since this thread has been necroed, and it's completely irrelevant given that better gems will drop in RoS, I'll close it.
