They have done the hardest part, removing the AH. Now it's easy to deal with gold : remove it completely (remove also the repair system that is completely pointless, and make the dyes free). Crafting remains exactly the same, without gold costs.
Very POE of you. It worked for POE cant say it wont work for D3, the currency will essentially shift to mats or gems, which actually isnt a bad idea as mats do have a sink with crafting while trading with gold, especially 3rd trades will only shift the gold around and doesnt really remove it from the economy.
Too bad about pickup radius though if this happens, its use will be cut in half unless its toggleable for gems and mats as well in the future.
I have a feeling the games economy and trading in general will be near non-existent.
If the loot is anything like the console version which it probably will be without a AH.
Players will simply farm for their own items or farm in a very small group and share.
Stuff like account wealth and item worth wont matter at all.
Gold wont really matter since crafting and any other gold sink will be killed off by low costs.
I've seen it happen in D3 on Console, In Torchlight 2 on PC. I expect D3 on PC to follow suit. The only trading based ARPG left will be PoE and that game is like that because the drops really, really suck and the entire game is a life sink.
i think there still will be trading via d2jsp and other means
furthermore, the expansion will ramp up the social chatting system in diablo 3 (afaik) so there will still be a lot of __Real__ trading where negotiation can take place.

Working with adobe and/or java is like pushing a paper clip against a building and expecting it to move...
I think the gold sink from Mystic and crafting together might be enough to maintain some value for gold. People that want to craft/reforge in bulk may still need additional gold income for funding.
On the other hand, I think the total size of the economy will decrease a lot since many people will play closer to self-found, so there may be more than one common currency depending on the trade.
I would think gold will be at least a little bit more valueable than D2. In D2 all you had to do with it was repair and gamble (which sucked). At least we have crafting, gem upgrades and upcoming cool mystic things to spend our gold on.

I have a feeling 2+ pieces will be the "standard" as health globes will be the primary source of healing.
