And you just gave a reason for why a larger stash means more trading and faster deflation Discarding items preserves the value of the less rare (powerful) items that otherwise would overflow the market. The only discarding that would occur with a infinite stash would be if the inventory gets full.
Anything that gets useless needs to be removed in some way. The amount of characters in low-mid level is allways going to be at a constant level, but the number of high level characters continues to grow. The way to remove high level items is already existing, it just needs a little fix. I'm talking about deleting characters. If the items are lost with the character, then the high item economy is secure.
That deflation of low-mid powered items is going to make lower levels more and more powerful as the value of the items suitable for them becomes reduced. Eventually the items drop to 0 value (the case of D2) and the trading with those items stops completely. That is why a reason to delete those items is needed. I remember the early ladders of D2 when the normal game list was full of people looking for cathans, angelic, isenhart, vidala or sigons. People actually traded low level items instead of giving them away, because they had a value.
We are probably going to have to say goodbye to rushing in D3, so the trading for the lower levels might become important. Why do we even have low level uniques/sets when noone wears them? The only way to get low level items is to get them in the few free games (another thing I find unbalanced) or to transfer it from another of your character (muling, which might not exist).
And your vision of economy is just twisted.
Low level items belongs to low level characters wich naturally have low amount of gold to trade, thats why a deflaction in low level items is natural as the game advances. And theres no "overflow" possiblities because, unlike you said, the amount of low level characters decrease *drastically* as the game advances, so decrease the amount of droped items. As twinking and rerolling is something natural and certain in Diablo game, the demand for low level items shall not decrease or shall decrease in a very slow pace. So the price of low level items shall not even come close to 0.
More trade in lower levels is allways something good - people will get their items faster, will have more fun trading and low level sets will have a reason to exist once you can trade it.
And the price 0 of D2 items exist for a totally different reason. The items have 0 price because theres no demand for those items. Start a character and level him to level 70+ can be done in a very few days or even hours. Keep in mind that D2 items are capital goods, the very reason of their existance is increase your character productivity. But who will loose time invest in something that becomes obsolete so fast ?
In other words, people don't trade low level items in D2 because look for then take more time then leveling your character to a point that you dont need then anymore. The reason why those items become a little more valuable on ladder reset is because people don't have droped the high level item yet, so those items don't become that obsolete when you reach higher levels.
Basicaly what you're saying is that there must be a way of destroying items in the economy and thats the only things that i agree with you. But your suggestion of destroying the items is by reducing the inventory, reducing the trades and maintain a high price. Thats just ridicolous. I'm 100% that the game will have a method to sink out items and gold from the economy, every game have it.
another stash dedicated for uniques encourages collectors to 'hog' every single gold writing they can get their hands on, makes d3 multiplayer another 'bring ur own' as no1 works together and does their seperate item farmings, not cool
