Many people think it doesn't work because only 8 players / game. Well it doesn't have to be an ingame system.. It could be a UI feature in battle.net chat area (or whatever its gonna be) where you can check your inventory and probably account stash/bank and put up offers and check other offers.
It could be item for item trade system or item for gold system or both ofc.
Item for item: You put up and item, type there what are you looking for and other people can make offers to that item. If you accept it the trade is made.

i can understand the concept of a auction house, but a bidding system would be much worse than anything in d2. Prices contantly shift, everything is on chance about how much you get, ect. mabey a network of players trading to eachother, but no bidding system.
