I'm sorry if there is already a thread here like this one, but I couldn't find it when I searched for it.
Anyways, I've been busy with numerous things:
1. College preparation
2. Work
3. Girlfriend
4. The Halls of Valor: Day of Ashes (Chapter 2) - reworking, yet another time
5. Written tribute to Diablo
6. Diablo II: LoD
7. StarCraft single-player campaign
My new-found obsession lies within the endless possibilities and potentials of the StarCraft Campaign and Map Editor. I recently took a break from the single player campaign of StarCraft (damn 10th Terran mission) and explored with the campaign editor.
Since campaigns themselves seem to hard to create at this point, I've just been working on a 4-player free-for-all map named Chokepoint. I spent about an hour on it and I'm ready to test it. I was also wondering if anyone else would like to try it. I need some criticism.
It's my first map and it seems pretty decent for being my first. I want more people to join in and share and design their own maps. I want to see what kind of creativity people have!
I went a 1 on 1 with this against my bro.
Me(zerg) him Terrain.
And I destroyed him.
I didnt expect it to be a space map XD
I like the jungle ones.
Well we pretty much enjoyed it.
Ehh if you want any criticism I'd say that the starting points are to close ot eachother.
But that could mean very fast games if the players are side by side.
It was interesting what you did with the center of the map.
Like how there was 8 bridges to the middle filled with mineral and stuff.
and it was seperated by gaps of deep space.
I'll totally try it. Designing Starcraft maps has always interested me. I was never good at making my own campaigns either, but I was getting to the point of making mission briefings. It was fun making dialogue for my characters and even inserting my own music during the briefings.
I'll download your map now, but I may need a couple days before I can give you my feedback on it. I'll have to attach one my favorite maps that I made too.
I set the game up kind of interestingly. I gave each player a platform to defend from to form a chokepoint. The middle has lots of minerals and vespene, but also, in the middle of the map on the sides, a type of resource is given. Each team is closer to theirs, but it varies. Two teams get vespene, and two teams get minerals - I thought that would throw some interesting strategies on the map.
I know the bases are pretty close, and I've already though of a way to kind of split them up.
It was a pretty normal game.
Um I just noticed tho, that I had the the bottom right of the map.
And it had 2 ways in only.
And it was really small and tight, and I think that gave me a good advantage of a defense.
I didnt even suggest myself to set up a spot in the middle of the map. Because its so small.
And Youd obviously run into the other player.
Well, I would of.
Actually..It was pretty quick.
I was playing zerg, and were very competetive.
And I was tryign to bring him down asap the whole down.
But putting bigger and bigger rushes to put pressure on him to where he suspects me coming.
And its just eco harrassment. Destroying Depots, SUVs.
Care to try Chokepoint again? I got Chokepoint v1.1 ready. I have a text document in the zip file that lists the changes I made, in case you don't notice them in-game.
And Siaynoq, I'm anxiously waiting to see your map!
I got to finally test out Chokepoint for myself. Lasted about 2 hours. Very action filled, especially in the middle, where the enemy Protoss tried building Pylons and Nexuses.
Terrans in the upper left corner were annihilated first. Zerg in the bottom left were destroyed second. Then I was Protoss in the lower right corner, and was overrun by Protoss from the upper right corner. Eventually they took the middle, and sent carriers, zealots, dragoons, scouts, and archons to my base. I held them off for a while, but they overwhelmed me. I had lots of fun.
I'm working on another map, a symmetric ashworld map named Corpseyard. It's very interesting and I will let you try it Nick, if you have time. I'm going to try it today. It looks good, but I'm sure it needs changes.
Okay I didnt get another chance to try Chokepoint.
But I woke up pretty early and I tried out Corspeyard.
And it was really impressive.
The map itself was really cool, and I really cant say about any changes.
I was too busy playing.
I played zerg again.
Protoss on the left.
Terran on top.
Another Zerg to the right.
me on bottom.
I rushed protoss being my biggest threat imo.
The way the map was designed..I easily sweeped from under their base.
And ALL of their probes were exposed and right in the open with the minerals.
I took out all probes, Im guessing there was more then 10-15.
After the zealots took out my first rush,I quickly had another one.
Took the zealots out, destroyed the pylons.
No pylons, no probes.
Eventually took the protoss out.
The rest of the game was a big struggle.
Unfortunatley my base got raped by the terran when I had all of my units dealing with the other zerg.
So it was defenseless.
And I was too quick and careless to set up another base in the middle of the map as I planned.
Other then that it was really fun, and I really liked the whole map all together.
I just got done testing Corpseyard for myself. 2 1/2 hours of "WTF!'s". Eventually I won though.
I was Protoss on bottom
Protoss on top
Terran on left
Zerg on right
The Terran and Zerg forces were defeated first. I wonder if their location on the sides has anything to do with that. The Terrans put up a nice defense around the southern left mineral pile, however. Very frustrating to breach. The Zerg were first to attack, swarming my base with hydralisks. That was near the very start. My photon cannons and zealots took them out before they did critical damage.
Protoss from the top took over both resource plateaus in the middle, as well as theirs on the side, their base, and both the Terrans. They were sending an occassional archon and dragoon. I felt they could have done far more harm with the resources they had.
Eventually I sent three waves simultaneously into their base. Three carriers, 12 zealots, and 6 archons. That took them out, but not before their high templars destroyed my entire zealot army with a few psionic storms.
Overall I liked the map a lot. It doesn't need that many changes, IMO. Maybe move the minerals and vespene for the teams on the sides of the map? Just a thought.
I'm brainstorming really hard about a jungle map. Trust me, you'll get your jungle map!
While you're working on those, I thought I'd post a map that I made a little while back. I worked hard on trying to make everything appear naturally random. There is a secondary mineral and gas location adjacent to each start location that is either on a raised level or surrounded by water. It's kind of fun cause the computer doesn't go for it right away. So as soon as you can, just take the island or raised levels and fortify them on their borders.
There is also a decent amount of critters as well as physical obstacles to keep the computer from coming at you too quickly. Be sure to check it out in the map editor to get a nice look at the whole thing. Feeback is always nice too. Enjoy!
I took a look at your map with the editor, and it's very natural looking - something I haven't really shown in my maps. Each player in your map has a uniquely different base structure. I like that.
We can both fight against a single computer opponent. And do you have a microphone for your computer? I've found it's much nicer to coordinate efforts with teammates over MSN Live as opposed to having type everything.

I dont really make maps, I dont have the patience or time for it.
I just play em.
Go ahead and ask me to test out any other maps, my brother always wants to play.
And Siaynoq, I'm anxiously waiting to see your map!
But my bro isnt here tonight.
So I'm gonna do a 2v2 with bots.

I'm tellin ya..make a jungle one.
There the best.

But I'll let you make a jungle frenzy XD
I'll just play around with stuff and post it up here later.
Not really sure about this one, but I'm trying some new things, with some old similarities of my other two maps.
I'm working on two other maps, too.
Horizon
Into the Fray
Both are two player maps, so far.
There is also a decent amount of critters as well as physical obstacles to keep the computer from coming at you too quickly. Be sure to check it out in the map editor to get a nice look at the whole thing. Feeback is always nice too. Enjoy!
