Has anyone seen this show? It was made in the late 1970s and was hosted by Carl Sagan. It's a really great show that not only discusses the nature of the cosmos, but also the history of our current understand of the universe and physics today. Of course, many advances have been made since this show was done, but even then it's a very informative show and there weren't a lot of charismatic scientists like Carl Sagan who could talk eloquently and simply about the universe and keep things as entertaining as he did.
I think some might even be slightly annoyed by the way he talks. He enunciates his b's like crazy and obviously loves to say the word billions. Nevertheless, it is a pretty marvelous show I think. And you can watch the entire series right now on Hulu. http://www.hulu.com/cosmos
I've been wanting to see/read some of Carl Sagan's stuff. Thanks for pointing out that this is on Hulu!

It's kind of cool in episode 11 he talks about whale songs and some scientists' efforts and understanding them. I realized as watching this that it may have been the inspiration for Star Trek IV. Cause Sagan argues that if we don't find enough importance in understanding the language patterns of whales and other intelligent mammals, how can we possibly hope to communicate with an extraterrestrial civilization other than through basic mathematics. Though this is acknowledged as the universal language, he still argues about the other possible methods of communication lost through the endangerment of whales.
But then he goes on to talk about how we've cut off many whales from each other because whale songs operate on so few hertz that with all the noise pollution in the waters today, they used to be able to talk to each other hundreds of miles away and know they can't hear each other anymore at those distances. It's kind of interesting.
