Two Handed Weapons VS. One Hand Weapons
Stats / Affixes - The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly - What Items I Pick Up
They don't mind videos, but if you plan to use this thread as an advertising thread (constantly updating it with new videos) then you'll want to send a message to Daemaro.
I'm not sure why there's this current trend to use facecams for videos like this, but it's not one I care for. It's a personal preference so please take that with a grain of salt, however I can tell you that not using it will make it easier to edit your commentary. I usually will make small edits to my recordings to remove flubs or exceptionally bad errors and that can be hard to do if you have yourself recorded on video as the video stutter will show up. When working with only audio you usually can't tell if there's an edit unless the tone is vastly different.
I think one issue I have with the facecam thing is that it's hard to tell if you really have an interest in the subject. there are times when it looks like you're just sitting there reading a script and it gives the appearance that you're bored or unprepared. It can be good to have something written up but you may consider practicing it in your head or in small takes so that you can make it sound more natural. Heck, you can even take your small takes and splice them together if you feel like one take was particularly good.
As far as video content is concerned, you had good information, but I think the reading of it was dry. The best parts of the videos were the times you relaxed and let your own personality show through. Your voice and tone were more natural then and you looked more animated and engaged into the subject at these times.
These are just my thoughts and obviously needn't be taken. The best advice I can give is just keep doing what you like to do and if you enjoy what you do, it will show through. As a fellow YouTuber and Diablofan, I welcome you and wish you the best of luck.
First off let me say thanks, great post, and well thought out! That's the kind of info I am looking for (I read it twice). I would have to agree with you about the presentation being dry.
If you dont mind my asking of a few questions. What about the facecam do you not like? Im not saying with my videos in particular (I see what you mean about me not being very engaging or showing much interest). Do you feel it just includes a element that is not needed or is a distraction from the topic?
Also, when you said videos like this, what exactaly were you referring to. Are you talking about all or at least most video game content in general? If not with all video game content, when would you think it to be a good idea to use one?
I understand how hard it is to get good useful feedback, so I usually will try to offer it when I'm able. Most of the time you get a "Great video!" or "Your vid sucks!" but both of those, while a way to gauge yourself, provide minimal criticism. Don't get me wrong, I love getting those "awesome video" remarks, but every now and then I just want to get that post that says "hey, I liked it but you could have done X better".
As for the FaceCam thing, that might be hard for me to put into proper words. It's very much my personal preference, which is why I said take it with a grain of salt, it wasn't a slight against you, but the concept in general as it's becoming popular.
Part of it I think stems from I want to see the content. I want to see what is being discussed. Unless the commentator is actively engaging me in the topic, I'm usually wanting to see the examples or to just watch the background footage even if it's just of the game and not of the topic at hand.
I do think there is a slight distraction issue as well. What's the intent of having the image there? should I be watching the game? the commentator? perhaps both? what about when there's text on screen, then there's potentially 3 things to keep track of.
When I said "like this" I meant video game footage/commentary in general. Usually face cams are good for live streams or "live" recordings so you can get a real time reaction from the streamer. This creates an added engagement for the viewer and that streamer can respond to viewers and there's a personal connection because you're seeing the streamer talk to you. The other time it might be good is if you have a show or segment based on it. For example, the MMO Report has a news report setting where the reporter is talking to you. Force of Force Strategy Gaming has his Force Feed where he sits and reports in between segments to offer opinion, but at any time he shows game footage, his face is nowhere to be seen. It makes him the focus of the video for his opinion and the game the focus for the story. Force is also highly animated when he talks to the camera so the engagement level is very high.
While typing I've been honestly trying to figure out my real issue with it. I suppose if I'm fully honest, it feels like this FaceCam trend is the YouTube equivalent of jumping in front of a camera and saying "look ma, i'm on TV!". It feels like a pretentious call for attention by the creator to fill a narcissistic need for attention and fame. Rather than promoting the subject they're talking about they're putting themselves out there and saying "Hey look at me".
Please don't misconstrue this as me thinking people that do this are actually like this and I am MOST DEFINITELY not attempting to say this is what I think you are doing. I don't know you or any of the people that use this method personally to be able to make that judgement call. You asked me to explain and I'm trying to be very honest and this is the best I can come up with. This is how I FEEL about the subject and it could very well just be my own personal issues that create these perceptions.
I suppose this counts as full disclosure. heh. Well hopefully my rambling did make me look like an ass and was possibly helpful in some way.
EDIT: Thought of another good use of the facecam thing. Look at Yoggscast or one of their affiliates. They have a method where they show them sitting but it's using a transparent overlay so it doesn't just block a huge box. They are part of the video and they tend to have reactions and responses that incorporate the ability to see what they are doing. This is especially true if there's more than one of them playing the game at the time because you can see them interact with each other as well.
That said; I guess my issue isn't really the facecam, it's the lack of using it for any reason other than to just show a person's face. Good use of a facecam means you're actively doing something that's part of the entertainment. Moving, showing something to the audience, interacting with the game in some way other than just playing with it. Does that make sense?
Excuse me, I'm tired as I've been without sleep. Anyone who's seen some of my posts when I'm tired might tell you that I can get very verbose and start to make less sense when that happens. hehehe.
Aww man, I am not on tv? Your post makes me want to go cry in the corner, your so mean!
Not really
I do understand you making sure, there are no hurt feelings. Sometimes people take things to personaly.
Now with that out of the way once again thanks! For you not having much sleep, it was a good read for sure. Like you said, it is hard to get good useful feedback. I am not taking what you said about the facecams, with a grain of salt, but to heart. I'm also not saying that one persons opinion is going to stop me, but I will remember it. If more people seem to feel the same way though, things could chage. While I do know what you mean when you say "with a grain of salt". We both know that people or even a persons opinion is very valuable, maybe not everyones "trolls". But this I can tell, you are not.
To answer your semi-rhetorical question. You didn't make an ass of your self and you were helpful.
I like the fact that you brought up Force. I have been watching him since almost day one. I know recently he mentioned in his latest "New PC Releases & Content" that he was thinking of droping the facecam, for the Force Feed. He had a big backlash to that idea, and wisely decide against it. No im not saying this is a sole reason to keep using one (for like you said he is not showing his face during footage), but did find it to be enlightening. So I'll be trying to get more feed back on the topic and see what comes up.
With all this talk of YouTube, I think i will go check one of your videos out, I have some spare time. See what kind of commentaries you do(steal all your good ideas Moo-who-ha-ha-ha-ha).
Once again thanks for the well thought out answers, and taking the time to write it all down!

The internet, she be a harsh mistress and it's hard to tell nuance and emotion from text. People get upset easily so I tend to add very standard caveats to my critiques and statements. Thanks for the discussion and for taking it as it was intended. Honestly this whole conversation forced me to think hard on why I have an issue with the style.
I like the fact that you brought up Force. I have been watching him since almost day one. I know recently he mentioned in his latest "New PC Releases & Content" that he was thinking of droping the facecam, for the Force Feed. Force is a good guy and I respect his work. I think his format works well with his style, the only real issue I had with "The Force Feed" Is that he would sometimes use very sarcastic humor in his news section that would come off as his oppinion rather than just a joke as he inteneded. I love sarcastic humor, but in a Diablo 3 update he did once, he used the humor through out the report making it seem like that was his official oppinion on the news article itself.
This actually caused me to respond to the video in which I brought up the concern and though he was being rather harsh on the patch at the time. He later came out with a statement where he stated it was intended as a joke and was supportive of the patch. Since then I think he's been a bit more careful on how he segues from topic to humor.
Force was one of two YT personalties that made me want to try my hand at making my own videos (the other was Totalbiscuit). When I was looking up Diablo 3 beta footage he was one of very few that did it with commentary and talking about how the game played. I liked that it was descriptive and somewhat analytical as raw gameplay footage can eventually get boring after you've seen the same segments so many times and it doesn't give you a good indicator on how the game FEELS only how it looks.
Over time I've stopped watching Force. I'm not entirely sure why, I think that now that I do my own commentary I pick apart things in his videos that I would do differently and it just changes the enjoyment factor. I still respect his work but I don't think his style is for me anymore. That said I still follow him on Twiter and value his oppinion when he gives it.
With all this talk of YouTube, I think i will go check one of your videos out, I have some spare time. See what kind of commentaries you do(steal all your good ideas Moo-who-ha-ha-ha-ha).

Oh don't do that unless you want lower subscriber numbers. lol. My videos don't get much attention, but a few people around here and on YT seem to like them which is enough for me (Thanks, guys!). I think my Tutorials are my best material, but I have fun with my Witch Doctor series. The latest one had a tribute to Deckard Cain at the end that I had fun making.
Honestly about the best thing I have is a Deckard Cain impersonation and even that's dubious at best!
Well, if you do check them out, I'm always open for feedback as well.
Well I checked out two of your videos so far and I have to say, what drugs were you on Ok once again not really. I just like to start my discussions off lighthearted. So now I'll start just like you did and throw in my own....
~~~DISCLAIMER~~~
I myself do not feel like I'm the best one fit for critiquing others work, dealing with YouTube video production. These so called "critiques" are more like me nitpicking, due to not finding any glaring mistakes. But I did want to extend you the same common courtesy you did to me, sense you're open for feedback.
I wanted to find a video were I felt you maybe a little out of you element. So I didn't want to watch a Diablo III video and chose to watch your first PoE video.
I thought that your introduction was a little long, briefly covering topics that needed further discussion. The one thing that comes to mind was you bringing up the skill tree. "I" just thought that it was the wrong place to bring this up, and im sure you could of made a halfhour video on the passive skill tree alone. I'm not saying to do that, just trying to get my point across.
Also, you could of played on Hardcore to make the videos a little more tense. This is something not necessary, and do know there are reasons against it. But on the topic of HC, I do feel that in the introduction you could of let the viewers know the option is there.
(Laughing at my self "your intro is to long, take somethings out" "but now add this")
Durring your first disconnet, I think reiterating that the game is still in beta would of been good. Also, You were talking about how to speed up selling items and said some thing along the lines of using the ctrl key. But didn't really explain how the process worked.
Some of this is just petty nitpicking, and the more things I type the less helpful I feel I'm being. Like I said, im not the best one for something like this, as im just getting started in this area. Hope some of it helps though.
I remember thinking you need to go over at least what the main stats do for your character. Then later on you did that exact thing, saying what Dex and Int do for you. Not really explaining how they apply to you character though. Once again, you later on went over what intelligence was and how its affects your character. Leaving out strength completely durring these discussion though. I think the main thing here is, It would of been beneficial to set some time aside just to go over you character as in main stats, passives, thoughts on the shadow, the direction you plan to go, and so on.
Well thats what I have. As I'm sure you know, none of this was ment to be attacking you or your videos.
Now for a couple good things. The very first thing I remember thinking was, hey this guy has a voice made for the radio. You are very good in what you choose for your topics of discussion. Also, you're able to keep a good flow with you discussion(s) and at keeping it interesting.
I did check out your latest Witch Doctor video, it was a day or two ago. When it got to the cinematic at the end of Act I. I was sitting there like what is going on, I dont remember this?! You had me going good, it was enjoyable for sure. But my favorite part was when you were going over the Travis post(i think that is his name) and the auction house. I found that to very enjoyable.
Once again, I hope you are able to get something out of this.
As a side note congratulations your a father! Oh wait thats not it let me start over..... congratulations on being that close to reaching one million views, that is quite a feet.
I am doing a Let's Play series of the campaign right now(Just got my first two videos up). I have to say so far the cinematics are sweeeet Blizzard hasn't let me down so far! After that I am looking into doing some multiplayer build guides and casting pro-matches. I maybe doing an achievement hunters guide also.
Are you saying that I look funny!?!?! If so, you're right
Are you saying that monday morning the day after Easter, and also on April fools day is a odd time to release a real video!?!?! If soo, you're right ( An April fools video on April fools that's real original. Upload a fools video in december if you want to really get someone, or you just make them think you're crazy)
Are you saying that I don't know how to link videos correctly!?!?! If sooo, you're right (teach me oh wise one)
Are you saying that my video is awesome!?!?! If soooo, you're right (I hope and thanks for the comment)
Are you saying that I sould stop saying "Are you saying that" !?!?! If sooooo, you're right
I started writing that post before looking at the video... I was just hoping it wasn't an April Fools "update" to the thread (cause, you know, today is April 1st? people fool others with lies :P).
That's why I said it was a weird timing as well (because I was pretty confident it was a serious video ;)).
To link the video (so people can play them directly) just check the "Share" tab on youtube (below the video) for the shortened version of the video url (usually something like you.tube.something/whatever). That's how I do it, at least (I'm sure there's a better way to do it, though, but I'm too lazy for that).
As an idea/suggestion, it would be nice to see in a future video a comparison between Stone of Jordans and Rare Rings (budget ones, legendary and top-end trifecta/quadfecta) - DPS-wise and also checking how much EHP you might be losing from choosing a SoJ over a Rare Ring with say +60 res all or high Vit one.
Thanks for the video on elemental damage. I get asked all the time why i use zuni's boots on my barb. Instead of explaining it every time I'll just link to your video.
I love sarcastic humor, but in a Diablo 3 update he did once, he used the humor through out the report making it seem like that was his official oppinion on the news article itself.
This actually caused me to respond to the video in which I brought up the concern and though he was being rather harsh on the patch at the time. He later came out with a statement where he stated it was intended as a joke and was supportive of the patch. Since then I think he's been a bit more careful on how he segues from topic to humor.
Force was one of two YT personalties that made me want to try my hand at making my own videos (the other was Totalbiscuit). When I was looking up Diablo 3 beta footage he was one of very few that did it with commentary and talking about how the game played. I liked that it was descriptive and somewhat analytical as raw gameplay footage can eventually get boring after you've seen the same segments so many times and it doesn't give you a good indicator on how the game FEELS only how it looks.
Over time I've stopped watching Force. I'm not entirely sure why, I think that now that I do my own commentary I pick apart things in his videos that I would do differently and it just changes the enjoyment factor. I still respect his work but I don't think his style is for me anymore. That said I still follow him on Twiter and value his oppinion when he gives it.
Oh don't do that unless you want lower subscriber numbers. lol. My videos don't get much attention, but a few people around here and on YT seem to like them which is enough for me (Thanks, guys!). I think my Tutorials are my best material, but I have fun with my Witch Doctor series. The latest one had a tribute to Deckard Cain at the end that I had fun making.
Honestly about the best thing I have is a Deckard Cain impersonation and even that's dubious at best!
Well, if you do check them out, I'm always open for feedback as well.
~~~DISCLAIMER~~~
I myself do not feel like I'm the best one fit for critiquing others work, dealing with YouTube video production. These so called "critiques" are more like me nitpicking, due to not finding any glaring mistakes. But I did want to extend you the same common courtesy you did to me, sense you're open for feedback.
I wanted to find a video were I felt you maybe a little out of you element. So I didn't want to watch a Diablo III video and chose to watch your first PoE video.
I thought that your introduction was a little long, briefly covering topics that needed further discussion. The one thing that comes to mind was you bringing up the skill tree. "I" just thought that it was the wrong place to bring this up, and im sure you could of made a halfhour video on the passive skill tree alone. I'm not saying to do that, just trying to get my point across.
Also, you could of played on Hardcore to make the videos a little more tense. This is something not necessary, and do know there are reasons against it. But on the topic of HC, I do feel that in the introduction you could of let the viewers know the option is there.
(Laughing at my self "your intro is to long, take somethings out" "but now add this")
Durring your first disconnet, I think reiterating that the game is still in beta would of been good. Also, You were talking about how to speed up selling items and said some thing along the lines of using the ctrl key. But didn't really explain how the process worked.
Some of this is just petty nitpicking, and the more things I type the less helpful I feel I'm being. Like I said, im not the best one for something like this, as im just getting started in this area. Hope some of it helps though.
I remember thinking you need to go over at least what the main stats do for your character. Then later on you did that exact thing, saying what Dex and Int do for you. Not really explaining how they apply to you character though. Once again, you later on went over what intelligence was and how its affects your character. Leaving out strength completely durring these discussion though. I think the main thing here is, It would of been beneficial to set some time aside just to go over you character as in main stats, passives, thoughts on the shadow, the direction you plan to go, and so on.
Well thats what I have. As I'm sure you know, none of this was ment to be attacking you or your videos.
Now for a couple good things. The very first thing I remember thinking was, hey this guy has a voice made for the radio. You are very good in what you choose for your topics of discussion. Also, you're able to keep a good flow with you discussion(s) and at keeping it interesting.
I did check out your latest Witch Doctor video, it was a day or two ago. When it got to the cinematic at the end of Act I. I was sitting there like what is going on, I dont remember this?! You had me going good, it was enjoyable for sure. But my favorite part was when you were going over the Travis post(i think that is his name) and the auction house. I found that to very enjoyable.
Once again, I hope you are able to get something out of this.

If soo, you're right ( An April fools video on April fools that's real original. Upload a fools video in december if you want to really get someone, or you just make them think you're crazy)
Are you saying that I don't know how to link videos correctly!?!?! If sooo, you're right (teach me oh wise one)
Are you saying that my video is awesome!?!?! If soooo, you're right (I hope and thanks for the comment)

That's why I said it was a weird timing as well (because I was pretty confident it was a serious video ;)).
To link the video (so people can play them directly) just check the "Share" tab on youtube (below the video) for the shortened version of the video url (usually something like you.tube.something/whatever). That's how I do it, at least (I'm sure there's a better way to do it, though, but I'm too lazy for that).
As an idea/suggestion, it would be nice to see in a future video a comparison between Stone of Jordans and Rare Rings (budget ones, legendary and top-end trifecta/quadfecta) - DPS-wise and also checking how much EHP you might be losing from choosing a SoJ over a Rare Ring with say +60 res all or high Vit one.
Ohhh MAN....
That sounds hard and like work....
Hahaha just kidding thats a great idea thanks

No problem, I got asked questions like the one you pointed also. Thanks for using the video as a source.
