When you are in a party are items/gold randomly divided among the team members or is it like D2 where the first one to click it gets it? Or is it like WoW where there will need/greed rolls for "good" items?
It's actually much better than any of those item ideas.
The way loot works in d3 is that when an enemy dies, the game does a 'loot roll' for everyone in range. Anyone whose loot roll yields positive results sees an item/gem/rune/gold drop. ANYTHING you see drop from an enemy ONLY you can see. Other players in the game don't even know it dropped unless you choose to tell them. So basically, no more worrying about people with faster pings or reaction speeds, no more worrying about losing need rolls on everything, etc. IF you see it, it's yours. Also you don't have to manually pick up gold, it automatically collects it.(Just gold though, all other items you do need to manually collect)
As to the rune question, so far no; current incarnation of runes only effects active abilities.

Also can you put runestones in passive skills?
