I'm pretty sure the PK system has been taken out (When you simply change your position towards a player into "Hostile" even without his conscent). I have no idea what they're gonna replace it with though, I'm just pretty sure you're gonna need to confirm that you want the duel as well.
I really liked the PK system in Diablo 2, other than the TPPK hack. Way back in the day I got so many HC kills by pretending to duel my friend and using color hack to fake death. I can only imagine that instead of finding a corpse in the Den of Evil, those 80+ people I gave loot to instead found a wall of hydras. Got loot a dozen or so times too :).

---- And the evil that was once vanquished shall rise anew! ----
Pk was taken out, how weak. Did Blizzard confirm that PK is out, is it a fact ? Someone in a thread that closed mentioned that both players would have to Hostile in order to PvP, cooperation doesn't work, that's been done in Hellgate:London, and it sent the PvP to hell because on top of that, the areas were instanced. You turn someone hostile, attack, and the other player either fights back or runs. None of this cooperation crap that hasn't worked in one Hack N Slash yet with the most recent example Hellgate.
When someone steals your items, or talks down upon you, what you do is, go hostile on them and fight. You don't wait or beg the person that's being a problem to go hostile so you can PvP.
We're - in general - not big fans of griefing for any game. It's really only "fun" for one person, and that definition of fun isn't generally something we're going to want to encourage. It's far more positive to encourage and support meaningful and skillful options and systems within a game, than a mechanic for people to instantly turn against one another for no meaningful gameplay reasons.
I definitely remember running with my friends, and someone toggles it, and bam everyone is dead and your one friend is laughing. Ok, ok, good joke I guess, and then you run back and *bam*, you've toggled it to get them back. After a while everyone usually agrees to a truce because it's just a waste of time. But I also remember running with random players and losing extremely nice items because of it, not cool. I'm sure that it was a feature that was right up some people's alleys, I won't deny there are some that would enjoy nothing more than to see others frustrated, but is that truly something that should be encouraged through design - if not directly opposed?
We have a large focus on cooperative play for Diablo III, and the mechanics and design decisions related to multiplayer are likely going to be based on supporting and encouraging it as much as possible, and not breaking it down.
That doesn't mean that PvP won't have its own focus, but those are details and features we aren't yet discussing.
So I think they want more structured PvP. <shrugs>
Lack of players, and attempting to run an MMO level of players on the Unreal engine made for massive failure.
Bah I hated Fury, I picked up the free disc at a local store and thought it looked cool. I think I lost every single match, then I tried to redeem my prize and the game errored and closed so I tossed it out.
A separate area for PVP does not fit Diablo I don't think. Consent required duels is definitely a must. I know a lot of you hate that, but it's not exactly fun getting pwnt by some jerk off who gets off on killing everyone while you're actually trying to do something and then camp your body. It never bothered me that my time was being wasted, but it annoyed the shit out of me that people were somehow satisfied by the boredom of doing it. Watching paint dry is about as much fun as camping someone.

You must find the courage to step through this gate...
The best method IMO for diablo would not be that lame ass request for duel crap. Rather have a box to select when you make a room to enable pvp. This room when viewed by other players should have a very noticable (perhaps in front of the room name) PVP icon. That way if somebody enters the room they cant bitch about being killed as they know what they were getting into upon entering.
Meanwhile the guys that like a little excitement can simply always select this box and will notice no difference. As well as going into someone else's room that has pvp enabled and pking it up...same goes for them if they dont wanna fight dont make a room with pvp tab enabled. I personally will be leaving the pvp turned on once i get a feel for the game and what im gonna do with my character build wise.
Some like this idea some will not but the bottom line it is the best way to keep both sides of the fence happy. If you dont wanna pvp you dont have to. If you want to pvp you can enable your room to have it or look for other ppl's rooms with it enabled and come in and pvp it up. No lame "so and so requests to duel" when some noobasaurus-rex is acting like a moron/interfering with your quests via not listening etc and you want his ear in your inventory :). This, if I personally had to pick only one...would be the reason i would pick for having this type of system. Duel request system brings in a whole 'nother level of "griefers" if they are truely not fans of it they should use the above system IMO.

That's been suggested a few times, and I hope they end up using something like that.
Ya I have seen/recommended it myself in a few other threads. Its a pretty solid system with no big issues i can see with those who want pvp out of their minds and those who are the exact opposite. Not to mention it would be very easy to implement into the game.

Well. I guess they should leave the system like it was before with a small add - make an option PvP/PvE game when you create a new game. That's all. People who like PvP will play in PvP games and people who don't will be in PvE games.
it should be anything goes... if ur in the streets and iwalk up to u with a machete ur not going to have an option to "not accept my head being chopped into bits" ur gonna get slashed or run the fuck away... i mean d2 had games people made specifically for dueling... wtf the problem with that... ur talkin gabout d3 like its an mmo and its not

And you're going to be thrown in prison for a very long time, let's not equate this to real life because it doesn't apply.
What's wrong with a selection when a game is made? PvP or PvE.

Gameplay skillwise doesn't seem much different from WoW or other MMO's though.

But my computer that runs Crysis still puked when it played Fury. I've never seen an engine optimised so poorly in my life.

No need to go making seperate PvP/PvE realms, just a game creation option.
Uhh... there HAVE been like at least 3 others that got locked because it broke out into arguing and flaming. Not sure if any are remaining.
yeah same wit me it pretty ridiculos how poorly it was done
