I have been playing around and theorycrafting with this set for the past couple of days. I feel it has potential to be quite a fun, strong set and it really fills the fantasy of a zealous, fast paced, melee plated character.
However it simply doesn't stack up to Akkhan's set, and the issues aren't necessarily Roland's not being powerful enough.
I have 3 suggestions in the hope that the dev's are iterating on this set and are reading forums for community feedback.
(5) Set:
Increase wrath generation from all sources by 100%.
This set runs thirsty. If you run with a primary generator with this set you cannot meet wrath costs appropriately. As a result your build normally runs with several skills/pieces revolving around trying to keep up with the costs of using shield bash/sweep attack.
This set bonus would increase Roland's damage (via more frequent use of shield bash/sweep attack), potentially free up more skill/gear slots for damage/defence/utility and improve how well builds using this set feel to play.
(3) Set:
+8000 life on hit.
A class set does not have to do everything to be good. It is reasonable that we would look to our build/gear for more surviveability. Having said that this build is squishy (as it has to be in melee all the time) and needs too many defensive abilities in your build to compete at higher torments/grifts.
Life on hit synergies well with the attack speed gain of the 6 set and whilst we would still need to be able to take the hits (via choices on gear/abilities in the build) this set bonus would allow us better healing to be able to stay in melee longer.
(6) Set:
Every use of Shield Bash or Sweep Attack that hits an enemy grants 25% (was 20%) increased Attack Speed for 5 (was 3) seconds. This effect stacks up to 4 (was 5) times.
This is a simple quality of life change. At 3 seconds the buff drops of very easily (like a knockback is often enough) and the buff requiring 5 stacks also means a lot of wrath is spent when going into a pack to get the buff up.
I have presented these suggestions as additions to the set and not supporting items. The same effects could be achieved by other legendary's but I feel builds using Roland's set already have a lot of choices for good supporting items (for example: Maximus, Golden Flense, Piro Marella, Angel Hair Braid, other sets such as Augilds/Blackthorns) and putting the mechanics on other items would reduce build variety and reduce viability of the set overall.
Here's hoping this set receives the adjustments it needs to be competitive as an endgame alternative to Akkhans.
p.s. This set looks amazing, the art guys and girls have done a fantastic job.
p.p.s. Can transmog be changed to allow 2 handed weapons to be transmogged to 2 handers of a different weapon type pls?
