Blizzard has unveiled a new design for Battle.net complete with new features and functionality. The development of a "new Battle.net" has been hinted at for a long time in anticipation for the upcoming releases of both Starcraft II and Diablo III.
The new Battle.net is an upgrade to all preexisting Blizzard Accounts tied to Starcraft, Diablo 2, and Warcraft 3. Owners of World of Warcraft have an option to merge all of their accounts to the new service.
Be sure to check out the new Battle.net Account FAQ too, as it may answer many of your questions regarding the new system.
Looks like the new Battle.net is getting one step closer to being Steam-like...
I'd like it to go in that direction. I wonder if they're going to make some sort of Battle.net client that sits in your taskbar icon place.
It sure would make the extra features of Battle.net 2.0 easier to use rather than going onto their website. Friendlists and clans and whatnot
Some people hate the steam direction though, personally I've never had any problems

I'll be interested in what Blizzard does with it...

I'm one of them. While the intention of steam is wondeful, I hate the fact that I have to have it on to play, and that I HAVE to have it patched to the latest version. Plus it's slow as hell to start, which doesn't make any sense.
I hope Blizzard releases Battle-net 2 with the intent of making it a complimentary software for online play, and not necessary for Singleplayer action.

Well, the only thing you need with Steam is to have it on. That doesn't mean you have to have it online, though in order to play offline you need to get online once every two weeks. I don't understand the patched to the latest version complaint.

However, I agree that it shouldn't be required.
Thing is, my internet is slow. So if I want to log in and play a game for a short while (which is what I use Steam for) it takes forever to start the game if there's a new patch, because I have to wait for a completely redundant upgrade I do not need at all to play the game. I should be able to decide myself what patch version I want for my game experience unless compatibility with other users (e.g. multiplayer) requires the same patch.
if I could find my SC key it would up my chances for getting into the [SC2] beta, wouldn't it... I pre-ordered it, so any blizz reps reading this, keep note of that. =]
Oh well.
Ontopic: I heard somewhere they might end up doing achievements with this?

Hooray for new battle.net!

This isn't the NEW new Battle.net is it?
I hope this is just an updated old B.net and that Battle.net 2 is still around the corner...
So I guess this is just a upgrade to the old Battle.net.
