The way it works is that players can only join your game when your are at a major checkpoint during the Act. For example, In Act 3 new players might join after you beat Grom or Siegebreaker.
The game is basically broken into quest sections by the major bosses. Each act has about 3-4 major bosses. So this is when players are likely to join.
Since the servers are down...here is a little tip from a noob for those who didn't know this.
Just like D2 (if I recall), your game will auto end in 30 seconds after you kill Diablo. You won't be able to return. So Make sure you have a little extra inventory space in your inventory when you go for you Diablo kill!
I had my inventory maxed out and about 3 rares and 3 blues dropped. Of course I was fumbling around my inventory and was unable to pick up a rare belt drop before the game booted me!
it prolly happened release night when your request for the charicter timed out
that didnt mean the charicter wasnt created it just means the fact that it was created couldnt be sent to your computer.
Yeah, this.
I had like 10 barbs named Ascendo haha. I tried deleting them but of course the servers crashed again while I was trying to do that.
Ahahahaha
Were you around for WoWs first expansion? Or Diablo 2 for that matter?
People couldn't reliably play D2 for a week. (online obviously)
I was around for D2 absolutely. Apples and oranges. D2 was worst, however that was 12 freaking years ago! Most players were on 56Kbps dial ups back then. And you had the option to play OFFLINE!
I lot has changed. Blizz is now part of a $5 billion dollar corporation. D3 was the top selling pre-ordered PC game on Amazon...they knew it was going to be a big surge on launch day. No excuses IMO.
They might have horrible product launches, but they make amazing games. I will overlook server issues that everyone should have already known would have happened anyways at launch by the fact that they put out amazing games.
How do you know it's a great game if you can't logon?
I agree. It's not like Blizzard doesn't have top notch expertise and resources in this area (i.e. global launches with millions of users playing WoW & Starcraft).
No excuse in my opinion. Hell the beta lasted over half a year. They had plenty of time to do a mega stress test.
With the the free character respects I don't think it's a big deal. Leveling to 60 in D3 won't take as long as an MMORPG. And D3 is all about loot, so why would it matter?
Anybody know what to do if it keeps asking to reinsert disc when installing with a digital copy?
I would uninstall everything, delete every Diablo directories, and reinstall. Go to Blizzard's tech support site for folder locations. You don't need to re-download the game. Just need to "clean" install.
My first install crashed and became corrupted because I had several applications open. I uninstalled and reinstalled...now I'm locked and loaded and ready to roll!
There are no reviews whatsoever for the game so far. I'm sure if they wanted to Blizzard could have allowed server access to a handful of prelaunch game reviewers, like Gamespot.
Could this mean they are afraid of negative reviews prior to launch? Like what they do sometimes with crappy big budget movies? Especially since they pre-sales have been going so strong.

The thing is that blue don't sell for much, about the same as a gold drop, so it's seems like a waste. I think you should be able to use them somehow.
