Ecutruin: I'll explain alittle about my gaming background to get to the point as to why i want ratings and esports features. I've played more then most people in my life because i'm chronically sick. I've been pro/semi-pro on several games and i consider games today to be no challenge at all, i'm sure Diablo 3 wont be any different, atleast for me that is as these things comes natural to me. PvP is where the challenge is, esports feature gives you the sense of progression and improvement. Also, it leads to great communities with the same views as me and other hardcore players. Its not to boost egos, perhaps for you it is or others you've had contact with. Its for progression and improvement, from my point of view atleast. Its also a endless goal.

If its about personal progression, then why do you need to know my rating? What is the need for public ratings?

I am also curious as to why Diablo 3 needs to have these features. Especially when the developers specifically state they don't want them. There are plenty of game out there devoted to eSports already...Diablo 3 doesn't NEED to be another one. What is wrong with Blizzard just making the game they want to and you either enjoying it...or not and moving on?

Ratings are important, IMO. I mean, how do you measure your progress if you have no idea on how you are doing?

They could do leagues like SC2 (and the matchmaking system is already there, and owned by blizzard too!) bronze/silver/gold, etc. It would at least be something. I believe Jay talked about "pvp level" in an interview.. that is pretty worthless. You know that eventually everyone is going to max it, then what?

posted a message on Recording D3, What to use?
    Like others have said

    Fraps for recording
Sony vegas : Easy to use, use this for the raw editing (Cutting out boring parts, etc)
Adobe after effect : Use this to add little touches like nice transitions, captions, effects, etc. Google Video Copilot for tutorials.

Recording videos is pretty fun actually. And it doesnt take that much time to produce something decent. And if you really like it, you can do really crazy stuff with after effect.

You see stuff like this, and it just kind of seems evident that they just flat out lied thoughout the development process.  Its coming soon, its 9/10 done, we could send this out right now...etc...BS BS BS!

Pretty much this. Back in september I think, they said the game was done and needed only some polish. Then after that, pretty much every news on the d3 website was to tell us that they removed something.Pretty disappointing. I mean, I was hyped about D3, but the more I follow it the more disappointed I am. From the RMAH, to removal of the rune system, and now the whole PVP system post-poned (which mean it'll take a few months. Lets be honest, if they removed it from release, it means that theres still a lot of work to do on it).As a PVPer, I'm not even sure I'll buy it on release. I'll probably wait for the PVP update. This suck. I loved diablo.

[...] I understand what it's intended to do for new players, but I really want to see improvements to the Elective Mode.  *sigh*

I dont think its good to consider that new players have the IQ of a small rock. I mean, come on. This amount of "hand holding" is just absurd, and it will frustrate anyone that has played more than 10 minutes.

    /rant

.Anyways, its only a calculator, its not really a big deal, but I'm getting tired of this design philosophy.

wow.. thats... I have nothing good to say about that.

I understand the reason, I honestly do.. but I dont like it on the web calculator =(

What are the reasons? :PI liked the old one, it was quick and easy. But this? I like to compare skills together, with this it will make comparing 2 skills (something that should be fast and easy) tedious.

posted a message on DiabloFans Calculator Build Contest (ONE POST ONLY)
    http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#caijOY!ghV!ZcZbYZ

This is my wizard build for PVP.

I always loved hydras, unfortunately they were never really accurate, and very easy to dodge. This time however, it seems (well, from what I seen in videos) that lightning hydras will be really hard to dodge (the projectile is almost instant, from what I have seen).

So, the build is based on laying hydras for damage, while kiting / LOSing to survive.

-Ray of frost (numb) will provide a strong, instant, no cooldown slow that can be applied from any range.
-Magic missiles with the seeker rune will allow me to still hit my target when I am breaking LOS (if the "tracking" is good enough, it will allow me to do "angled shots" to get around corners)
-Energy armor (Force armor) : tough choice here, but I have the feeling that this will work better than diamond skin to keep me alive.

The other skills are pretty self explanatory.

    Quote from Silverchild

In vanilla wow there was no pvp at all (no arena, no BG, no honor, nothing).

Then my memory must've become bad because I remember people farming AV endlessly to get GM rank. I remember the Southshore - Tarren Mill world pvp. I remember getting honor ...

Maybe I should see a doctor or something, hrhr

I think what Silverchild was saying is: It was not in the original WOW (Vanilla); real PVP + Ranks came like 6 months after maybe more in a patch.
Those Tarren Mill - Southshore battles was so awesome :)

    Exactly.

At launch there was nothing, and then blizzard realized they had to do something about the PVP. It what something that players wanted. Then we had the honor grind + the firsts battlegrounds. Do you remember how that felt, at first? The honor system was horrible. For the BGs, you had to actually GO there and talk to the battlemaster (or w/e) and wait. It was totally disconnected from everything else, it was inconvenient, you'd have to basically sit there and wait. To me, that felt like blizzard went "oh shit, we forgot PVP,quick, lets make something". I was really unimpressed when they first added those features.

They also pretty much killed world PVP in the process.

Anyways. This time I hope they think about pvp FROM THE START. Because its obvious that pvp is what a lot of players want. Or else they'll have another "oh shit, pvp" moment a few months after release, and they risk screwing everything up.

Exactly. Why bother to play this game if all you care about is competition? This game and the developers deserve more than that. But hey, just my opinion.

I think the "diablo" playstyle is fun. Its not the same as a shooter or an MMO with easy-mode tab targeting. Right now the only other option would be bloodline champions (I think?).

    @ wow vs diablo pvp.
I'd like to point out that wow was made, from the start, as a PVE game. In vanilla wow there was no pvp at all (no arena, no BG, no honor, nothing). Then they just started adding pvp elements "on top". Pvp in wow still feels (to me) like a lousy addition. It doesnt "fit" in the game, because the game was not designed with pvp in mind. Thats why we get problems like pvp unbalancing the pve. In D3 they actually have a chance to DESIGN the game with both pve and pvp in mind this time.

Except what tends to happen is, pve is fun and pvp is imbalanced. Forums go into an uproar, things are patched several times, and eventually pvp is still imbalanced, but pve also gets turned on it's head in the process. I could use a lot of mmo's as an example here, but yeah, the devs are right to stick to one side or the other. Pandering to both audiences is just going to frustrate everyone.

In D3 theres a system in place to prevent that. Skills can be tweaked to affect only pve or pvp. For example there could be a skill that deal 100 dmg and stun for 1 second, but against players it would only do 700 and stun for ,5. And this system is ALREADY DONE. Its in the game.

I dont get the "fear" of PVP unbalancing PVE. they arent linked.

I am pretty much what the OP described. I am usually not interested in a game if the game does not allow me to PVP.

I don't think its about e-peen and "winning", however. Its just that PVE has always bored me incredibly fast. PVE is always so... static. I mean, once you did the campaign once, what is there left to do? You either make an alt (and do the same campaign all over again) or go gear hunting (and then farm the same area again and again). PVE is (by nature) very repetitive. PVP, on the other hand, is always new and fresh. Each fight is different. You could PVP for years and still manage to learn new strategies and builds! Also, in a balanced game, the metagame is always shifting, and you have to adapt to stay on top.

It saddens me that blizzard is doing everything possible to destroy competitive PVP in D3.
