It's all really based on how you would like to play: I like doing lots of damage over time and avoiding attacks. So in my Witch Doctor build, I focused on lots of heavy damage and mana cost DoT's, then one fairly spammable spell with a golden (usually mana-regen) rune.
So I have lots of cooldowns and huge mana drains, but then I have a pretty good off-attack to regen my mana.
I think it is important to figure out what it is you are aiming to do, and then focus your build towards it.
Like what BombayMD said, pick some sort of specialization or goal, and then start building synergies and picking runes around those one or two skills.
I'm as interested in a beta key as anyone on these forums, but we should let this thread die out..

Everyone's enthusiasm for this contest really means a lot to me. I feel bad to disappoint so many but I'm just happy to create hype around this game. Thanks everyone for coming out and building the excitement with me. I'm looking into further ways to share D3 Beta access and I'll be posting them here first.

I was just watching the beta B-roll video on youtube and noticed something very strange while some of the characters were moving...
It seems as if they are using the "Click to Move" mouse option in WoW, and small yellowy-orange circles appear on the ground which the character walks to.
If you watch this video right around 5:20 when the female monk is about to end you will see the circles. And also if you wait until about 5:25 you'll see the demon hunter which is the best part of the video that I could find where the circles are very clearly visible against the dark floor.
It also happens at other points in the video, which if you watch it again, just pay attention to where the character is moving and you'll see them!
