Feb 24, 2012mazingerz posted a message on Message from Jay, Skill Runes and Choices, Changes, Login Issues, EU PayPal, Item CustomizationBeen beta testing since patch 8 or 9 (can't remember- back when you could swap skills immediately at any time).Posted in: News
I'm okay with the rune system. I was excited about the old rune system because having another item to collect and improve your character meant more immediate customization. Having 6 different runes types meant you had 6 different variations on each skill as soon as you found a level 1 rune. Now the different runes are staggered throughout the leveling process, and while that means you wont get that complete customization until the higher levels, it gives you a little upgrade to look forward to nearly every new level.
I would have loved to see the original system use some kind of additional UI where you found a rune it became imbued into your character and you'd never have to worry about picking up another ever again- an unlockable item, kind of like the quest items from diablo 2 (Atmas's book, Aldor's Potion, Malah's Scroll). That way you could have the variety sooner than later, but they'd increase in power the higher levels you find along the way and not have the inventory space issue.
I understand Blizzard probably bit off more than it could chew with the original system. At this point I just want to play the game. I know Blizz will continue to tweak the content and mechanics for many years to come. I'd rather they release a watered down rune system now and maybe redo it in a later patch a year down the line then continue to noodle month after month. -
Jan 26, 2012mazingerz posted a message on New Information , Hardcore, Option Tooltips, Clock, End of Beta Contest, 5000 bugs, Error 3022I would say the AH is also a pretty big hurdle, unless Blizz intends to keep the interface borderline useless or they have a much more robust system in place internally that we haven't seen.Posted in: News
Last time I tried the AH in Beta the search function/filtering was remarkably limited in scope and the category fields returned 100's of items completely outside of the parameters.
Specifically, you could only search for single attributes which could not be filtered by level requirement or value. For example, if you wanted an item with poison damage, you'd get every single item on the AH with that stat, regardless of level requirement. Nor could you be specific, limiting the search to items that provided 20+ poison damage, because you felt anything below that value was useless. -

When money is no object for a developer they can go back to the drawing board as often as they like. Yes, it's frustrating to have our hopes smashed over and over, but it's a game. We're not investors. We're not waiting on Blizzard to deliver some life saving drug. It's a game. It's taking forever to come out, it's annoying, but it's completely out of our control. -

Nice to see these hero tweaks happening. Some of these adjustments seem too small to notice give our restricted Beta access but in Blizzard we trust. -

Aug 19, 2010mazingerz posted a message on Crafting Through ArtisansWhile I have no doubt I wont be standing around watching my hero crafting in twon, I fear I'll be spending way too much opening the salvage window and deconstructing every piece of junk I come across. Maybe it's too exploitable, but I was hoping the crafting system would just be entirely gold related. I hope this doesn't turn into anything like Torchlight where my entire inventory was just filled with odd levels of gems to be combined and upgraded.Posted in: News

Still a great game and I was surprised how entertaining it is after my 7 year hiatus. 800x600 resolution is brutal and all the bots (spam, enchanters, rushers, and boss runners) kind of kill it long term, but it definitely curbs my D3 cravings.

Been playing D2 again and I gotta say it's much easier to get killed, especially if you're impaitent. There's no (for the most part) damage mitigation, just dodge so the early damage spikes can easily be fatal. No classes have any AoE worth a dam at the start, and the monster density is much higher. Having to kill Fallen (who can be revived) one at a time is more challenging than anything in the beta. Countess is twice the boss SK is.

Was never big on electronica, but this stuff just sounds slow and jumbled- no emotion, just weird SFX, blips, beeps, distortion, etc.
I have no problem with other people appreciating it, just not my thing.

I'm going completely casual here, no friends, trying to avoid public games, rushing, etc.
Any tips for playing completely solo, or is it the same as all the MF guides I've read: make a blizzard sorc, farm Nightmare bosses, outfit alts as the gear comes in? Do I stand a chance starting with a melee character?
It seems like every guide assumes you can just stockpile stat/skill points until level 30 and leech XP from Act 2 normal on. Any help for someone who intends to play the game, albeit not at the highest level or close to it.

With that said, I can't really knock it because I always love characters in games who summon a ton of stationary defensive units like the trap assassin- which also seems to be omitted from the current lineup.

I hate the font/type treatment of item drops. Boring sans serif font in a gray box? Probably a toggle option, but all the in game text looks unfinished (but hopefully it is)
2. What toggle options will you turn off? Or what do you want to be a toggle option, so you can turn it off?
I'll definitely be turning off the scrolling combat numbers. Never liked it in any game, it just creates clutter. I can see health bars dropping, I don't need to do maths.
3. What is your FAVORITE part of the game so far?
The death animations, spell effects, environment and environmental effects. The game feels so real, the mood feels perfect. People who say the graphics are 10 years outdated have no eye for detail.
Quest system looks very natural and fluid. Not a ton of pointless side quests like an MMO, but enough to keep you going and chasing that carrot without even realizing it.
4. What is your biggest concern?
Massive class disparity late/endgame. Granted I haven't played D2 in years, and I realize many classes were revised over time, but when I played the Amazon and Sorceress where in a league of their own, while Paladin, Necro, Assassin and Druid were pretty much novelty classes. I want every class to be a killing/farming machine and everything just comes down to playstyle.
I'm also only going Hardcore for the first time. I hope there isn't some stupid BS moment where I hit something and it just explodes and instant gibs me like the insane charged bolt creatures in D2.

I'm actually least impressed with the Barb- although I haven't seen one outside of the first few zones. His huge hammer ability (one of the early ones) uses a ton of his resource per swing, and it seems like he has the most trouble regenerating rage while every other class I've seen can practically ignore their resource bubble.
