Oh and I noticed a feature that can be exploited to death, and I know I would be using it:

Without the risk of wiping, unless the gold drop reduction from monsters is big enough to really hurt, then I can see my weapons having an endless list of pwnage stats. Is this really a good thing?

That is just the mod authors attempt to allow you to create gear to survive. You can delete that part of the mod fairly easily by taking out the section of the mod related to enchanting. For instance I personally enjoyed the difficulty but did not like the slower levels so I do not use the slower exp and fame gains provided. Don't forget the cost of enchanting pretty much doubles every time and you can still fail to get an enchantment several times in a row so the items don't get that much stronger.

Edit - removing the 2 files called globals.dat should allow you to play the mod without altering your enchant rates at all.

There really is no "balance" to exploit in a single player game with no trading either. Some people use mods that drop all uniques and allow much more enchanting some mods make rare items rarer it is pretty much do you personally want your experience to be harder or easier to taste ^_^

So I'm a wuss for not having the option to choose that difficulty? What if I were to tell you there was ultimate hardcore (10x harder than insane)? Oh you didn't know? Wuss...

Now excuse me while I go play my unusual builds on very hard, being the wuss that I am.

    I was just kidding :P

Ultimate hardcore wouldn't server much of a purpose though most strong attacks already one shot you on insane.

While Torchlight had a level cap, it did have an infinite dungeon. I have to admit that I only ever cleared a level or two of this infinite dungeon because it didn't give me any sense of accomplishment... Despite being a great game wasn't compelled to play in an infinite dungeon...

TL has no level cap. A simple mod jacks the level up to 999 and can be expanded. The gear caps below level 100 but again mods fix that. Some of the custom classes are geared towards being viable for infinite dungeon play.

You left out the best features for me :(

Infinite random dynamic dungeon. Nothing was more frustrating about D2 than running the same levels with each character and then finishing hell mode and having not much left to do other than running the same level repeatedly.

Also easily modifiable nothing better than fresh free content and a great modding community. There are already great fan made monsters, player characters and maps to add into your gaming experience. They cannot offer that kind of modability and still run the same online experience D2 had (although both of these things have their separate merits)

I started off with normal coz Im too pro for easy :P
Once I got a feel for the game it was obvious this was too easy...
So I jumped to hard. But again, too easy.
Now I'm doing very hard, but with a ranger so it's still fairly easy - like, I barely ever die - so I think I'm going to switch to melee hardcore Very hard.

Seriously, I reckon very hard is a joke. I thought I would be SHITTING MY PANTS, but I find that spamming the same skill and selling and re-selling my overflowing stack of pots is the way it will have to be.
I don't remember finding it any easier in D2 nightmare on singleplayer...

And yes to support mad3nch1na's point, once you get through that early and scary threshold, it becomes WAY easier.

Don't be such a wuss. I play on insane (4X harder than very hard).
