PVP in D3 could potentially be very similar to PVP in D2 with some modifications. My suggestion is that a new element of notoriety be incorporated into the game. In RL, ff you were a really efficient and feared murderer you would have a reputation and that reputation would be known by those who are sufficiently experienced and possibly murderers themselves, correct? The greater your reputation the less experienced one would have to be to know of you. For example, your children may already know of the most heinous of criminals that ever existed, but it would take an older, more educated and wiser person to know of the lesser or more esoteric criminals.
If they can provide a mechanism whereby players are more attuned to a hostile individual's status (with experience) or perhaps create quests or events that allow you to buff your awareness without overtly tipping off the true nature of a player (i.e. the PK wouldn't get the obvious label "Murderer" appended to their name), there would be that lingering sense of danger - but it would be more realistic. You'd have to be very experienced to spot an edge-case killer, but the most grotesque and accomplished murderers are easily spotted even by lowbies.
Quite opposed to the random "take your chances" feel of PVP in D2 but still in accordance with the evil and gritty Diablo environment that makes the game what it is.
EDIT: In addition, your reputation can dwindle the longer you go without killing another player - thereby slowly eliminating the perceived threat to other players. You would have to kill again to bring it back up. It makes for a more legendary experience - a single player can be known as the one who slayed thousands, but has slipped into memory - his presence hardly known. You could make a character whose primary goal is to terrorize others - and then slowly play him into extinction - only to be resurrected more brutal than before at an unexpected moment.

Apr 30, 2008TheOctagon posted a message on Diablo3.com becomes Diablofans.com! Blizzard acquires diablo3.com.Come on. After years of speculation, the endless debates - over 120 pages of forum comments during Blizzcon with several of us GLUED to our monitors watching giga.de broadcast embarrassingly pointless footage - watching the hordes (oh, pun? maybe ;)) of WoW fans clamor for more of their digital crack while we remain restless and disgruntled yet hopeful - this community has stuck it out through all of it. How many nay-saying trolls have we had to stomp to keep our dignity and the truth of the series at the forefront?Posted in: News
Every single crumb of hope we've seen we've made mountains out of - and now some of you want to downplay this? I find that ridiculous.
If there was ever a time to be excited about the Diablo franchise, NOW is the time. -

Another Surfergirl update.
Again, disclaimer remains: this is not gospel. It's industry insider speculation. It may be incorrect, but I do hold firm that SG is a pretty solid source overall.
If it's correct it is, indeed, congruent with the idea of a WWI announcement. If they are playing the anniversary tip as well, then I think we're all in for a treat.
Otherwise, Blizzard will just bone us like they have in the past. Whoa, was that some pessimism creeping into my voice? How dare me. -

So, uh, if they were to announce a new Diablo title, I bet they'd want Richard Knaak on hand to elaborate on its storyline. -

Even though there is no "new product announcement" title in there - it is not by any means farfetched to see them unveil a product during the first hour.
And the plug the SHIT out of it for the next 48 hours.
That's just good marketing.
And since Blizz is a pretty secretive company, I wouldn't put it past them. Yes, I am all too optimistic at this point, but let's not rule this possibility out. -
Aug 2, 2007TheOctagon posted a message on Diablo3.com Attending BlizzconNo one really knows how long each of the performers are going to be on for.Posted in: News
Chances are VGL and L70ETC will be splitting stage time and Jay Mohr might get some time to warm up with some comedy, but I don't know if they each have enough time to fill that block entirely.
How long does it take to show a cool trailer and make a small, teaser announcement right? We're not expecting a full-blown Diablo Q&A session, just something that says we're on the right track.
At least that's what I'm hoping - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

You're absolutely correct and I agree that there is no evidence of a patch with new, significant bosses. I was merely paraphrasing Medievaldragon to debunk the idea that a No-CD patch would be at all superb in the eyes of the true Diablo player (besides the minor convenience of not inserting a CD to play ... I still have all my original Diablo discs dating back to Diablo 1 so I consider myself pretty much set in this department).
It would, however, be advantageous to harness the opportunity to extend the lore in-game considering they are putting in the effort in other forms of media (i.e. the book series, the upcoming Blizzcast Diablo Lore Q&A). Why not slip some into the main artery, so to speak?
Then maybe Orions_Landing won't have to mainline so much Diablo waiting for a new game:D

I'm saying that the mainstream media is starting to get a whiff of hysteria surrounding the new and Blue-confirmed "next-gen MMO." Until Blizz outright hits us with the news none of this is evidence. I merely provided some links for discussion. The fact that a sanctioned site has been either A) given the green light for a Diablo III related forum or has yet to be contacted to remove it from their site remains somewhat exciting.
Blizzard is wise to sanction a site for Diablo discussion as they are unable to host the boards on their own site for various reasons. Sure, it would be a lot more reassuring to have a Diablo III board on the Blizz site (that would be the Blizz blessing), but that is clearly against their long-standing doctrine of non-disclosure. You'll see a Diablo III (or World of Sanctuary or what have you) discussion board when the game is announced or released.
Discounting or swearing-against a Diablo MMO this early before any information has been released solely based on the fact that WoW is a somewhat mediocre experience is also unwise in my opinion. How did traditional Warcraft players feel about having their pride and joy mutated into what it is today? Its hack-n-slash roots will shine through in whatever form the game takes in its next iteration. Blizzard might be figuratively cruel and unresponsive at times, but they are far from ignorant when it comes to these matters. Alienating a community and fanbase as savvy and dedicated as the one gathered here is a sure way to lose business for life.

This time it's not Surfer Girl, but equally credible sources (maybe less-so, but certinaly mainstream enough) that tout the clues and have started to pick up hype signals about the next iteration of Diablo.
Wired I realize it's an article on Vaporware, but D3 has been vaporware since 2001, so let's call it like we see it hmm?
Softpedia This one echoes our community's giddiness about the subject and points to an interesting forum addition at a sanctioned Blizzard fansite page.
Keep hope alive. I don't think we have to wait til 2009 for an announcement. Maybe for a playable demo, but certainly not for an announcement.

Is this something we should look into maybe creating? I know there are committed fan communities for Diablo out there, but I would challenge anyone to find me an, at least, half-decent collection, interpretation and summary of the lore of Diablo.
As a devoted and eager community ourselves shouldn't we, at bare minimum, seek out this grail of knowledge (lest we create it ourselves)? I've always been keenly interested in the lore. I think that the lore of Diablo is something we should champion even above the raw mechanics of the game. Without the story and the narrative the overall quality of the experience suffers dramatically. Without enthusiastic authors like Richard A. Knaak and others we risk losing the essence of Diablo.
EDIT: Off-topic. Does anyone feel slighted in the least that they whored out many of the popular Diablo item names to WoW? Sorry for the change of pace here. It just crossed my mind, but it bears some correlation to the lore.

I generally, as a rule, treat rumors and hearsay with a hint of caution, but if there ever was a tipster to listen to amid the static surrounding any upcoming announcement or release, then it's far and away Surfer Girl.
Aside from the chuckles we've eked from Morhaime in his myriad interviews including those conducted during the recent Blizzard/Activision merger, this is the most comforting revelation indeed.
Disagree to whatever extent you'd like, but this is serious knowledge. I'm excited.
Also, unless someone has previously posted this in which case you are free to berate me, you missed this one.
EDIT: To support my claim here, I'd like to point out that several prominent gaming communities often refer to Surfer Girl posts (like destructoid, 1up, etc.) when they're sniffing out news for upcoming announcements.

I know this thread is probably quite off topic at this point, but did anyone notice recently the Blizzard jobs page? Now they're listing their hot jobs by providing a little icon reference to the team to which they will be hired. So far it looks like WoW, SC2 and Top Secret at the three.
Top Secret?
Nice. I like their style on this one.

Can we finally close the verdict on this thread?
I feel as though I have contributed as much relevant forum fodder to the thread as I possibly can, but at this point I realize we are spinning our wheels with no real focus in mind.
Let's put our efforts back into Diablo 3 and what this community really stands for. Why not revive the efforts to tease out some D3 facts? I'll even go back to speculating over rumors (carefully and cautiously).
We are the authority on Diablo 3 news, I guarantee you. I've read a number of forums where the topic of D3 has perked its evil, horned head and the mods have pointed the discussion to the learned pages of Diablo3.com.
In closing, I would hope that the moderators would start a new thread that we can dedicate to the healthy banter regarding the subject of Diablo 3 and less of the other flotsom that has recently plagued this noble community.
Sincerely,
The Octagon
