When I used + [element] damage items in Diablo 2, I always felt like it increased that element's damage on my spells too. For example: I have +200 cold damage gloves, and I use Frost Bolt with base damage 250-300, damage is 450-550. Was my feeling wrong?
Anyway... some weapons still have attributes of + [element] damage in Diablo 3. I'm guessing that this damage is not counted towards DPS that spells use (or am I wrong?), and that + damage will affect only spells of the same type.
Any thoughts on this, and is the some confirmed info regarding?
in Diablo 2, if it said "Add 3-10 cold damage", it would only affect melee swing, because it was melee damage + bonus cold damage.
the stats that affected cold spells were either +Cold Skill, +% Cold Skill Damage or -% Enemy Cold Resistance.
So yeah, your feeling was wrong if you thought otherwise.
On the other hand, Diablo 3 spells are based off said weapon damage, so i wouldn tknow but i would totally try if i could get into D3 Beta (I have invite, cant use Battletag)

On weapons at least, it literally adds that element damage to your attack, whether it's a melee swing or a spell cast (as far as I can tell) I believe the spells base element will always be the animation such as your arcane orb will always cause the enemy to die using the arcane death animation, but the weapon you are using with +10 holy damage should add into that.
I do not think there is any confirmation on exactly how these mechanics are calculated but I have a interesting guess about how it works. Say you are a wizard and you are using Ray of Frost. The spell itself says it does cold damage so it will remain unchanged by the +elemental damage HOWEVER I bet the +elemental damage will be treated much like the +damage stat is treated.
In regards to other attacks that are unattuned like Wave of Force or many of the melee attacks will have their attack type changed to what the weapon lists. The only reason why I say this is that I noticed that when firing unattuned attacks AND auto attacks with my DH enemies would give off the animation of a holy attack hitting them while using a bow with +holy damage (little white runes popping out around them).
I can not say for sure but I do believe that it does play a part in changing the element of regular and skill based attacks but it does not change some other things. I know for a fact that when you take the wizard passive that allows arcane damage u deal to slow you will still get the slow proc off of arcane based attacks while wielding something like a fire sword.
Or even a more interesting thought. What if having an elemental weapon just added the element to the spell. A good example is in WoW there are attacks that do 2 damage types at once. I bet when the damage is calculated it would choose the element that bypasses the most resistance.
This is all speculation and until there is a more official blue post about it I don't think we will get a definitive answer for it.
