Wouldt it fix it if u had to have 10posts before u could make a new thread?
Kinda sad to see d-fans getting flooded with spammers ;__;
I already suggested this, as it is a guaranteed way to prevent spammers from laying ruin to the website. The Admin claims that limited permissions is a "turn off" to new members, because they typically come here to post a question etc.
I'll put it like this; If I was a new member, never before visited here, and I was about to sign up and I noticed all the spam.......I would leave and never come back. I would assume this website is defunct and I would go to another site.
They won't be able to stop this any other way. There's only one way to deal with this. Limited permissions for new members. Problem solved. But they have this strange "corporate" approach to it, with rhetoric about making the website fully accessible to new members.
Having a 10 post limit to make a new thread doesn't help a thing. Those bots spam 10 threads/post in no time.. plus, they would just bump other threads with their spam messages (and then make a new thread if the system doesn't recognize them until then). Also, we're banning all of them but they just sign up again and again with random user names. I completely agree with you that this is ridiculous and the current implemented system doesn't seem to be enough... but the "simple solutions" don't work either. After all, bots are smarter than average human posters these days - just imagine CAPTCHAS which can be solved with close to 100% success rate by bots but we humans fail it from time to time
As Molster hinted, they're working on a software solution but it's holiday season... nothing happening in the next few days, I'm afraid.
Are you SURE that's how this bot works? That it would default to posting in existing threads to reach enough posts to start it's own threads? I've never seen it work like that, ever. But I'm no expert, just an ignorant (and frustrated) observer.
Happy Holidays! At least someone is guarding the hen house.
The bots actually did post in existing threads, not just new ones. But those were captured by the spam system. So yeah, they would resort to that, too ;-)
And honestly... 10 posts to make a new thread is kind of counter-productive because most people start by asking a question in a new thread (I think that's what I did when I joined as well). It would definitely alienate some new users, but bots would just post (or wait and post, if you add a time-out) to hit the 10 post mark and then make the thread. We've had this rule before as you might remember.
Happy Holidays to you too :-) I think we're all guarding the hen house every now and then, but not as regularly as on a "normal day" of course.
so we think we found the issue of why this is effecting dfans over other sites that have it handled after the first big attack. cherubdown was able to make a small change to the spam filter that was not set vs other sites.
Will wait and see how this impacts the results. But should help

the change seems to solve the problem, great, keep up the good work, you're awesome!

there hasnt been another wave yet, so to early to tell, but I have my fingers crossed
As a person who can read the spam, it's not some kind of revenge spam bot, it's someone hoping to drum up business and very likely just throwing the info out there indiscriminately. It's all pseudo-prostitution spam and things that are illegal, but not strongly enforced against in Korea.
Not sure what the forum software back end looks like so its hard to say what I would do. I have some experience with a few of the popular forum software out there and in cases like this anything not posted in English was auto deleted. Some languages were disabled entirely and if more then 2 posts (by the same user) violated the language restriction in a 30m period the account was auto banned by the system in place.
Of course Dfans is a different monster then what I'm use to dealing with, I deal with a small EMU community and have the liberty of CIDR banning since I don't have users from specific regions of the world and don't care if I ban an entire country.
At least the team here cares about fixing the issue and is responsive to the users posting in this thread. No matter what else that is a serious A+ on their part compared to what the users are use to seeing from say Blizzard.
It would be nice if it's only a small wave during a fixed time ;-)
There was a new wave of spam (different to the previous one), so the system had to "adapt" again. It started about 17 hours ago and has been going on constantly since then. What you saw was just the initial spam before the system new about it (after deleting a few of those threads it's now under control, hopefully).
There were close to 1000 threads of spam just in the past 17 hours... so what you saw was only a small part. Hopefully we won't be bothered by it a lot anytime soon, thanks to Molster and the rest of the DFans team.
On Christmas Day....
Merry Christmas

Any chance the forum can ban racists , it's a much worse situation in the world today than spammers .

Definitely seems that the system works.
