It looks like the heavenly pantheon is coming apart. Perhaps it is part of some cosmic dynamic that demands the Angiris Council's fall from grace in order to balance out the destruction of the Great Evils?
The Arch Angels are being picked off, one by one:
Tyrael's been exiled, his interference on Sanctuary having been discovered. This exile is probably influenced by the corruption of the Angiris Council. He's now mortal.
Imperius, I'd agree, becomes more tyrannical without Tyrael's balancing influence, leading him to take on the Aspect of Wrath.
Ithareal's lost his prescient ability where Sanctuary is concerned, and it's said he's gone mad. I'd guess Auriel either kills Ithareal; or perhaps Ithareal's loss simply affects Auriel to such a degree that she succumbs to Despair, therefor opening the way for her corruption. They are the closest of any of the Arch Angels, so what happens to one will effect the other.
And Malthael's gone missing some time ago, so he's the ultimate wild card. Will he come back to save the day, or become evil as well?
Asmodan is said to have generals that represent each of the Seven Deadly Sins. The Arch Angels are also representatives of "universal powers", and it seems each is being transformed, one by one. Could there be a connection?

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
All in the Forger's wake is left bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the dark Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.
