Actually, at the moment, the Sacrifice skill of the WD is the only thing that makes him and his pets interact someway. Anyway, i was hoping for more complex pet mechanics when I first saw the WD (the whole pet buff and skill directed to your pet story).
Imo if most of the WD's skill sticks to area of damage and disables he will end up playing to much like the wizard. I was hoping for a true pet class archetype. However we need to put out hands in the class first, the game is not even in beta yet, it's impossible to jude this kind of thing.
I don't think there is a doubt in any bodies' mind that we will not be seeing the Necro from the start. Expansion, however, is a different story. Lets keep dreaming.
I did say this and still maintain my opinion on it. .
Now you're just been picky...
Similarities between the sorc and wizard:
-Teleportation
-Massive Slowing AoE's Spells
-Heavy one target and multitarget nuking
-Field Control spells like Hydra, Meteor and Blizzard.
-Magic Shields to freeze attackers and increase resistance.
-Possibility of melee attacking by enchanting your weapon
Really, the only difference between Sorc and Wiz (so far) are the Slow Time, wich is only one more CC in the long list of sorceress and wizard spells.
The only similarity between WD and Necro have summons (wich is uber vague because 4/7 of characters in D2 have summons). Also the damage over time dps (poison damage) wich is the only decent similarity between those two classes.
And I don't think the necromancer will comeback just because the game can't have more then 2/5 spellcasters of the total classes. If instead of the WD we had a Priest class that was a suportive healer i would still know for sure that the necro will not come back just because this priest would be a spellcaster.
The prove that the differences between necro and wd are much smaller then the diferences between wiz-sorc is that the necro could be possible to be added in a future expansion while the sorc is 100% impossible (most of sorc spells are used by the wiz. Also, theres no reason to a sorc cast a spell and a wiz don't, making the coexistence of those 2 classes in a single game impossible).
The magic/debuff/summon analysis are too vague. I don't agree the WD have debuffs. Crowd Controls are not debuff gameplay wise. Debuffs are skills that decrease stats (and buff are skills that increase stats). Crowd Control are skills used to disable your oponents. As Debuff are used to increase the overall party eficience just lke a Buff do, the CC is used as a strategical tool to deal with masses of enemies (it's like reduces enemies numbers for a while).
Also the WD's cc's belongs to 2 different skill trees. Also his attack skills are all spread among all his 3 skill trees. So his not magic/debuff/summon like the necro. He is magic and cc/summon and cc/magic.
But do they belong to the same archetype? Yes. But thats not what is writen in your OP..
You said they were too similar in lore, looks and gameplay and they aren't. You also said the similarities between the WD-Necro were greater then Wiz-Sorc and thats not true.
Just because two classes belongs to the same archtype doesn't mnea they are similar at all. For exemple the barbarian belongs to the same archetype of D1's warrior but one must be crazy and stupid to say they are similar in looks, lore or gameplay.
Lore:
I don't even need to use any arguments. Read WD's lore in D3 website and Necro's lore in the Arreat Summit and see the absolute absense of similarities.
Looks:
Necromancer are palid, have white long hair and use armor made out of bones. Witch Doctor have dark skin, no hair and use colorfull-tropical-tribal cloths. Your similarities are so vague that belongs to a mind that are seeking then. They style are 100% different - necromancer are truely that dark-creepy medieval character. The WD style is more picturesque, hes above all things exotic and weird - his stetic is more to "bizarre" then "dark".
Gameplay:
I wonder why you think the WD gameplay and the Necro are similar if you never played with him ?
A friend of mine played the blizzcon demo and i will reproduce his words:
" The Witch Doctor are completly different from the necromancer. The mongrels kill stuff very fast but dies even faster - it feels more like D1's Elemental spell then any D2 summon. Also his 2 crowd controls are essentials, it's like using frost nova and fear in wow."
So his summon are veyr different. If can't imagine two diferent summoner classes just look at D2. The Trap Sin is not but a SUMMONER - still the gameplay between a skellymancer and a trap sin are very clear.
The necromancer curses have totally different use then a WD curses. In most cases (AD, IM and LR, the 3 most used curses) have the function to directly increase the overall DPS of the party, not to crowd control. Andthe WD curses are pure straight cc's.
Also the comparison between the Bone and the Fire are beyond non sense. The two fire spells we know so far (Fire Bats and Skull) are basically mid range spells. And necromancer bone spells don't have mid, but a super master large range. You can hit stuff from outside of the screen with bone spirit. Actually, range is one of the very advantages of the bonenecro - he can hit the enemy from really far away. The mid-range caster in D2 are the Druid since he really needs to be close to his enemy to cst anything because the spell have a low range or because it takes a random direction or because it's travel speed is to slow.
Imo the only similarity between those 2 classes are - both summon undeads and use poison damage. A very vague one if you ask me.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"In time the hissing of her sanity
Faded out her voice and soiled her name
And like marked pages in a diary
Everything seemed clean that is unstained
The incoherent talk of ordinary days
Why would we really need to live?
Decide what is clear and what's within a haze
What you should take and what to give" - Opeth

IN DIABLO 3.
D3 =/= D3 expansion. And they can change their minds as they did many times in many ocasions.
Surely in a expansion !
