I'm not entirely sure how different sets will be in Diablo III, although I do believe that they were in some vague and logical form confirmed. In this case, is it specified that this template is strictly for Diablo II?
Yes. This template is called Template:Infobox_Item_Stats_(Diablo_II). The name given to the set article was because I judged the possibility of a set appearing with the exact same name in D3 to be very slim.

While it may seem like a good, neat idea to organise it in in tables like that.. Just looking at it makes my mind say "too much information" and not want to read it. I kinda prefer the way it's done over at the Arreat Summit, where you scroll down to see the next item in a set. Personal preference maybe?
Well obviously it's a matter of personal preference, why else would I have designed it as I did?
In response, there's definately pro's and con's with both ways of listing items. However I choose this model because the template was originally designed for regular items and unique items. This was because I always felt it was horrible over at Arreat where several unique items you wished to compare where at different places of the screen. Listing items next to each other would allow you to quickly look over all stats and compare them without scrolling.
Sets could not originally be displayed within this template, so I reworked it a bit to allow for this addition, as well as runewords (although no pages currently utilize that function yet). This change was so that all item pages did belong to the same item template, which makes it much easier to update all item pages if changes need to be done, since one change will affect all item pages simultaneously.
The issue of comparison doesn't exist for sets, since no items go in the same spot. Therefore the original reason for putting items side by side disappears. I still feel it looks better though, and it offers an alternative to how Arreat Summit does it.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Whew. My god, if I ever get the chance I'll kill the creator of wiki code.
The template has been majorly updated, resolving some of the issues, but I'm not entirely finished yet I don't think. The linebreak issue isn't adressed, but the table has been made slightly more slim.

Nice. Now this is the kind of feedback I need  It's too late for me to fix now, but I'll look over all of this in the morning. In the meantime, feel free to post further thoughts.
One question to all of you: If you've noticed, most texts have a small indent. Is that necessary, or should I remove it? Because it causes a lot of hassle with the formatting.

for instance the stats and magical properties are not all aligned. for me it kinda makes it hard to read. like i could be reading magical properties and then move left to the next ones magical properties and then see stats.
Ah I see. Yeah that could be fixed. I'm not sure if it's easily fixed, but I should be able to. And I can agree with you that it doesn't really look that good at the moment with the tables ending at different places.

Only complaints I have is that the damage/defence area is somewhat awkward to read, i dunno if it is my computer causing this or if it's the wiki, but it appears like
18 to
42 (30
avg)
What resolution are you running on? I'm running on 1600x1200, but I assumed lower resolutions would simply cause the wiki page to expand to the right, not compress the tables, although the latter could happen I suppose.

Other complaint is the magical properties section, it gets a tad confusing with all of the text. Perhaps have every other property a different shade ?
For example:
20% Faster Cast Rate
+77 To Mana
+57 To Life
+10 To Energy
+1-2 To Lightning
Mastery (Sorceress Only)
(varies)
+1-2 To Fire Mastery
(Sorceress Only)
(varies)
+1-2 To Cold Mastery
(Sorceress Only)
(varies)
+1 To Sorceress Skill
Levels (2 Items)
-15% To Enemy Fire Resistance
(3 Items)
-15% To Enemy Lightning Resistance (4
Items)
+15% To Cold Skills
Damage (Complete Set)
I can fix those linebreaks for sure, although how the resolution kicks in I'm not sure. See, the coloring issue is a bit of a hassle, as right now it would have to be applied to every damn line in every table throughout the entire wiki by hand. And I'm not really up to that.
The alternative would be to create separate cells for each line of text. I could look into that. For comparison's sake, do you also feel that Arreat Summit could improve the color formatting, or does it work well there?

Just a quick idea, it might be nice if they were organized according to the position the character wears them. Ex. Helm top-middle row of a table, ammy top-right etc.

Yeah. Would it be possible to incorporate something like the in-game equipped-items inventory screen into the template?
Well technically there's no barrier, but I'm definately not sure if that's a good path to take.
The first issue is that the bottom row will require five pieces of equipment (gloves, belt, boots 2 rings), while the other two only have two and three respectively. While that works good in game due to the relatively small size of jewelry, the're going to take up a lot of space here. I'm not sure that will look all that good. And if you move the equipment around, you're going to end up with five rows at most, which is a bit much.
And this isn't considering the fact that sets have wildly different items. And take a set like Berserker's Arsenal. Instead of having three items lined up neatly, you have one item on top of the other two, further expalding on that with the set bonuses, it gets harder to easily overview it all.
Right now only two sets are unable to fit on two rows (including the bonuses), and that's Sigon's and Immortal King. but there aren't a wholel of of options no matter how you choose to implement sets.

Here's a picture of what it looks for me anyways:

I just don't see it as a viable alterative.
Would you say they same thing about for example a unique items page? http://wiki.diablofans.com/index.php/Unique_Axes_(Diablo_II)
