Note that once more: THIS IS JUST A THEORY. kthxbai.
Has anyone considered that after the events of 20 years ago that the Priests of Rathma, whom were said to be above mortal temptation and having a greater understanding of the balance between Good and Evil, rather than going into denial or madness, took the next step in Necromancy and became Liches(Or is it Lich for the plural too?) to prepare for a greater battle between the would-be onslaught from Hell and/or to keep their mortal selves from slipping into said madness and denial?
Once more, just a theory, and the only remote proof I have of this is a simple screenshot:
In the lower right corner of the picture, you see a larger skeleton commanding others.
Now, if that is just a monster, this theory could still have some meat to it. Necromancers don't necessarily have to be a player class(Though they were my favorite in D2 and I'd really love to see them back...), they could have become Liches and then said monsters, provided the Liches were somehow corrupted by the new evils at hand.
Summoning seems to be a huge part in D3 so Necros will prolly paly a part somewhere down the line. As for them being Liches, nah, to coincidental because of WOTLK

Dude this is not WoW in hell:cool:, dont mix to different games only blizzard can do that, not a mere mortal like yourself lol
I think it's very possible, and a good idea to boot. I just wish people would stop freaking out about them leaving out the Necromancer, or the Witch Doctor replacing him. They say in the official FAQ that it will not.

OK *inserts foot in mouth* I saw that somewhere... but apparently not on the FAQ... So it's not certain whether the Necromancer will even be in the game.

Olk, first i love the Necro so dont think i'm just saying this to be a hater or something. But, in the GameSpot interview: http://www.gamespot.com/video/930659/6193139/diablo-iii-interview he says that the Witch Doctor is similar to the D2 Necro. And knowing Blizzard they are not going to add 2 classes that are similar to each other in a game that will be release with only 5 classes to choose from.
When you look at it they are really alike... Diseases and curses.... I was kinda hoping the Witch Doctor would be Diablo 3's Druid.

Well, in all honesty, I've never played WoW or any Warcraft game in my life, so I was basing the Lich theory on just basic Necromancer knowledge. There are very few games and books that don't connect Necromancers with Liches, So I figured it would be an interesting topic of discussion.
Also, in response to Gokoussj3's post:
Blizzard borrows from itself constantly, its not exactly that far out of the box to suggest this, even if my theory wasn't based off of it originally.
hey guys, have faith, blizzard never hurts our expactations, necros will be back, they are one Diablos univverse symbols. The witch doctor is a exotic class, he looks like someone that came from Kurasts forest, the place that have many things in common whith necromancers. I like to think that by some way necros and witchs will show thenslves linked, maybe when the witch doctor get on high levels he will become a NECROMANCER:necro:
Sorry my poor english, i'm learning it!!!
I was just reading up on some of the lore of the Diablo Universe and came across this
Q u o t e: Along with the creation of Sanctuary came the creation of the Worldstone (and Trag'Oul - though they are unaware of Trag'Ouls existence).
Inarius created the world stone to hide Sanctuary from the eyes of heaven and hell. When Tyreal destroyed the world stone I think it may have inadvertently killed off Trag'Oul.
Q u o t e: Trag'Oul is a massive dragon on whose back the world lies. He is worshiped by the Necromancers of the Cult of Rathma, and in return he supplies them with spells.
If Trag'Oul is dead then the Necromancer will not have their spells and not be necromancers anymore...
Trag'Oul existed as guardian of sanctuary, and there were others guarding other realms as well.
I don't believe in any way he was tied to the World Stone.
However, I'm willing to bet that there's going to be a necromancer in the game somewhere, either playable or a very key NPC. They are just to critical to the lore. They are the ones fighting for the balance between good and evil, and no one else understands the importance of this better then them.
I also am willing to bet we might get to meet big ol Trag himself. That would be shweeeeet!!
Edit: However, necros were simply able to help bridge the gap between the living here and the dead. They were to conduits for communication, and I'm pretty sure you need to be alive in order to accomplish that.

I saw a Werewolf drinking a Pina' Collada at Trader Vick's....
Trag'Oul in any shape or form would be nice, indeed

It has been said... that in the end of all things... we would find a new beginning. But as the shadow once again crawls across our world... and the stench of terror drifts on a bitter wind... the people pray for strength and guidance. They should pray for the mercy of a swift death... for I've seen what the darkness hides!
... I don't think it's safe here.
Hoping for Pink Chain Lightning in D3!

did you imagine how cool could necros looks in Diablo 3? Perhaps they look older, like the D3 barbarian is. Perhaps they become slim, old, weak, similar to the esqueletons that they can summon, but with a big power, more than we have seen in the other diablo game, totaly underground charater. If they come like NPCs, will be too bad see them, interact with them, but don't control them.

Since there's already a Witch Doctor class, and they're likely to have 5 classes that are different, having a Necromancer aswell would be a bit strange. They do seem alot like the same playstyles, if we look back at the one from D2.

eh! I now that! But the game seems to have a lot of things to be added, maybe they want to put more than 5 classes in the future( i'm not speaking about expantions), so, i want to keep my hope in necro's return:D

Hehe, not here to try and burst your bubble though I agree though, having necromancers again would be funny (and lorewise awesome), but my guess is just that.. well, it isn't going to happen. I'm sure it likely could, but let's wait and see what they have in store for us.
