I just signed up to this site (yes, the chance at a beta key finally turned me from frequent reader into an actual poster) and I had a problem.
When creating the curse account it asked me for a ‘global username’ and then in the next section it asked for name, email and password.
I kept getting the ‘username is taken’ problem and over and over again I tried to create an account with different usernames and failed. I got frustrated and tried a username of gibberish but the same error, so I figured something must be going wrong.
Something was going wrong, it was my name that was taken! It makes sense to me now, both the ‘global username’ and the ‘name’ section were asking for usernames (that could not double up with existing ones, of course). However, calling one a ‘global username’ and one a ‘name’ had me very confused – I assumed when it was asking for my name it actually wanted my name!
I feel that my assumption was a very reasonable one and a misunderstanding that could occur again to others. The confusion stems from the form asking for both something called a ‘username’ and a ‘name’ – I assumed one was a username and one was my actual name.
The username field was qualified with the word global so I should have figured from this that the website wanted two usernames from me. Despite this, using the two different terms (name and username) for one thing really threw me.
Anyway, hopefully this is helpful website feedback and not just the whining of a user frustrated with his own stupidity :).
