Blizzard is putting an amazing amount of detail in D3, and doing an awesome job of making sure nothing gets detached from itself through its phases of interactions. An example of what I mean is; from the moment an item drops, to when it's in your inventory, to your paper doll, to when it's on your avatar, it looks the same; the model holds true.
So I was thinking, what if the items an artisan has in his/her inventory at any given time, transfer to what items you see in their shop actively in game?
Sure the effect would be more apparent for the blacksmith contrast to the jeweler, but this could be an awesome UI.
On top of the standard listing that you get when you talk to the artisan, you could hover over the items, live in shop and see their stats. Or spot something you need at a glance.
Sure, it wouldn't do for a replacement for the regular UI, but I think it's a neat concept.

As much as it is a descent idea, id prefer to have all the items listed similar to how they were in D2, i dont wanna buy an item just to see i missed hovering over another thats better.
Not a bad idea, but i think its just a bit of extra stuff that i dont feel will accomplish anything by including.
I'm no programmer be any standard, but seeing as the item models are already made in the first place, placing them in positions around the shop according to the inventory randomizer wouldn't be to hard. All the information is there when you chick on the artisan, the only thing missing is to link the item models. Though I'm sure they have more important things to be doing.
I talked it over with my 2 friends who play D2 and they liked it, one of them is in fact a programmer in schooling, though he admitted to having no idea on how hard it would be to do so late in development. Though the fact that they built their own engine to run the game would mean it's definitely possible.

Good point, though I'm speaking of the gear itself. The shield with the face standing up center frame, or the horned helm to the lower left. It would be cool if those where actually what the artisan has in stock, so if you wanted you could just hover over the item and see it's stats. Sorry if I wasn't clear.
So say you were looking for a maul with some kind of elemental enchantment. You stroll over to your blacksmith and just look and see if there is a maul around his shop, and if it has a lightning, frost, fire or any other kind of aura around it.
It wouldn't work so well with the jeweler though, seeing his items are so small.
That's what I meant
Again though, you're right that it would probably be a lot of work for the little eye candy.

I could definitely see the sheer number of items being a big problem, being that even in the blacksmiths high levels there is only though two corner mounts.. As with the similarity between items. I guess those are reasons it's not in game.
Though I'm not 100% sure those items are custom made, definitely under a strong lighting effect, but could be models.. Also might not be.. I can hope models will look that good lol.
