Sounds to me, the way Bashiok words things, that they will be offering some alternative...the OP has a legitimate point...I'd bring it up on bnet forums.
Also, might be worth a mention, Windows 7 is going to allow parental control hardcore....even though I know the OP is more concerned about others
He's playing unreal tournament, screams at it for taking too long to load, it loads, he starts playing and freaking out while doing so.
The whole movie was staged. The kid was showing how anti-game activists in Germany portray gamers. Those same people got a hold of it and thought it was real.
Fairly well-known viral video that was big a few years back.
You're going to your mother-in-laws to play Diablo on lan? O.o Call me old-fashioned but usually when I visit some ones house, I actually spend time with them.
LOL! I do spend time with them. I'm just making a point. Sometimes, when I visit family for a long time (like a whole week), sometimes I have old friends over to play a few games. Without Internet, it's just frustrating that we have no multiplayer options!
Also, might be worth a mention, Windows 7 is going to allow parental control hardcore
I doubt they will get that right, I have deployed and managed a number of enterprise applications costing between a few thousand to tens of thousands to control web access and none of them are without issues. Surf Control, Web Sense, Watch Guard, Symantec Gateway, etc. Hardcore is easy, accurately graceful is not. You are constantly having to allow site exceptions even with the best of applications.
I'd say that is is the childrens right to have that choise, not the parent.
Are you high? As long as he's under 18, he's subject to his parent's will.

Well, it sucks to be them, perhaps they should curse their religious deity for having them born in a 3rd world country.
I like the fact that I completely destroyed your argument, and all you had to fight back with is some lame, unfunny slur.

Of course it has always been the parental right to decide what is best for their child up to a point. I'm talking about risk. The risk of the child getting permanently damaged by a comment made on an MMO are fairly small I imagine, that choice of whether or not to let the child take that risk has always been with the parent, I do not dispute that. But one wonders whether it would also be deemed too risky to travel in a car or to play outside with other children as there are many more real and present dangers in those environments than there ever would be on an MMO. Where do you draw the line?
I can understand the parent not wanting the child to get upset, but to worry about permanent mental scaring seems a tad overdramatic in my oppinion. A far better choice I belive would be to try to give the child the self confidence to say "that dude just called me an idiot! What a moron!" and to give support to help them cope properly with similar issues that they will inevitably encounter in their lives. I think that if a child gets irreversably mentaly destroyed by a few harsh comments then there was probably a prexisting problem in their pshyce. of course if the child is very young then I agree it could be harmful but then they should not be playing the game in the first place (as said by many posts before this one).
Where do I draw the line? I don't know, I'm not a parent. As for Vegas, he's free to put his kid in a plastic bubble from now until he's of legal age. It doesn't matter if you or I agree..that's what I'm telling you.
He's 12. You can't trust him to have the mentality of a mature 20 year old for example. I'm not talking about getting mentally destroyed..that's virtually impossible..I'm talking about getting one's self esteem lowered..it is possible. Actually, it's very possible.
Why play the game? Why not play the game? Me and around 200 other have been playing games like Blood, Diablo, Doom, and Quake since were 4 years old..we all grew up to be very normal, decent men. I think it's up to how you raise a child who is playing those games.

Getting your self esteem destroyed is not necessarily the end of the world but I agree that it should be avoided and most parents would say that they would not want it to happen
I remember my first day of secondary school (age 11). This guy thought it would be a great idea to head butt me in the corridor outside of the classroom. That shattered my self confidence (and my nose)
I did recover from that episode but I think that incidents like that can be far more dammaging than online interactions.
Yeah I bubble my kid a bit because I live in a state where education is the near the worst in the nation. I live in Sin City a highly transient town where it seems every notorious criminal comes just before they get arrested, porn stars make their film debuts, sex, drinking, and gambling is sold on half the billboards in town, and he would be going to school with more adult entertainers kids than in any other place in the world. If I could leave for another state tomorrow, I would.
LOL! At least Diablo 3 will be fun by itself. I won't be buying SC2 anymore. The whole point of buying that game was to have LAN parties with friends.
Put up a lan party with your friends and play in battle.net with 1 connection to internet?
At first I was worried about that but mom was playing it for a year before he got on it and he kept watching her play it over her shoulder (when she wasn't looking). We give him a healthy dose of "this is fantasy and a game" and "this is real and reality" and make sure his attitude stays in the right court. He deals pretty well games, what I am more concerned about are 15 or 16 year old players starting to exercize their new found 4 letter vocabularies and cap on each other wit. That's the stuff that will chip away at someones self image, 11 and 12 year olds look up to that age group because they know it's around the corner and listen to them for pointers, too closely.
Welll lets see if bnet2 will have profanity filter to censor the rulde words
Sisters nephew just started to play wow at the age of 10
Anyways, is anyone actually gullible enough to believe that "piracy" bullcrap reason?
I don't think the reason they gave was piracy, it was the giving of extra code to ones who would exploit it and then use those exploits on battle.net
I'm sure Diablo 3 will be up pirated on the internet in a matter of days after its release *sigh*
If leaving out LAN doesn't lead to really low levels of hacking and duping on the new battle.net then its double-fail on blizzards behalf

I don't believe that reason either, it's implausible. LAN based connections are peer to peer, there is no central authenticating server involved, no central host, no central user account database. The code (assuming someone can decompile it into cogent readable code) for peer to peer communications is not going to reveal any holes into b.net. Most TCP/IP LAN gaming still uses RPC over UDP calls heavily (not optimal for slow links). If that's the reason they gave, it's far more likely someone in the decision maker position just pulled it out of their ass and disseminated it down to the PR people who wouldn't question it. No they just made the call and that was that, technology and security had nothing to do with it.
Lets see, after about a month or two there will be a pirated version available with LAN capabilities, so, is their anyone who can explain to me how limiting a game for those who are honest customers makes any sense whatsoever? Sure, its maybe not that bad as all that Securom and BS, but come on, are they freaking idiots?
It doesnt have to be a pirated version with a lan option done by fans....it will certainly be some addon or mod or w/e u wanna call it that can be used on any legit copy lol
Well i'm really dissapointed. I'm from South Africa and internet over here is really a luxury. Our internet over here is way behind most of the world and its just slow and you pay your behind off for it. For us connecting to a battlenet server over in america or europe is really a hopeless exercise if you dont have the best lines over here.
Bashoik if you do read this by some miracle please take what i said back to Blizzard and tell them how arrogant they are being, just because americans have cheap fast and available internet doesnt mean the rest of the world does. Blizzard you should be providing for all your gamers not just the fortunate first world ones. LAN would of been the one way me and my friends down here could of really enjoyed diablo 3 and starcraft 2. Now what!?!?! I was ready to purchase all your games but now i am hesitant.
Maybe the USA is ready for battlenet and capable but you guys arent thinking beyond that.
Bashiok i hope u listening and you can give me a good reason why blizzard is denying less fortunate countries of enjoying your games to the full.
Thanks,
Jody
