I have seen a few interesting multiplayer mode requests here. One that I would find very appealing would be a gladiator arena of sorts somewhere in the world of Diablo 3. Background for having the arena could be that it was created to help train and distinguish the best fighters in the world in order to prepare them for the battle against the evil onslaught. You could have duels or team battles in this arena with different tasks. This will open up doors to certain PvP battle types such as capture the flag, last man standing, or onslaught (mode where players fight waves of monsters that get increasingly stronger) - the possibilities are limitless. Here, a ranking system could also be implemented.
I believe that the point behind Diablo multiplayer is mainly to enjoy playing the game and completing its quests with your friends. So, to just randomly throw in multiplayer modes such as capture the flag without any background purpose or setting within the world of Diablo just won't work. Therefore, I think by implementing an arena setting with historical background is a good portal for tying in other multiplayer modes into the storyline of the game.
I was just going to suggest a PVP dueling side game similar in match structure of the NHL play-offs. Randomly assign matches and continue in elimination until the last 2 face each other. I'm sure I've seen games like mortal combat feature similar match formats.
Assuming 4 entrants is too low, you'd obviously want 8-16 players for the number to work, otherwise it would have to be some sort of a Swiss tourney, with rematches for some players.
Leave it to a canadian to make a Diablo reference reference to hockey...
Anyways I think this is a good idea it would really add to the game. And maybe they could take out the hostility option for the normal stages then since it doesn't really make sense for heroes to be randomly killing each other either.

I was trying to think of something different, but couldn't think of anything else. Doesn't help that it is playoff season...

While having the game storyline represented in the arena would be a good idea, having it not actually influence core game play would be better given the seriousness of diablo's storyline, a game of CTF seems childish. It would be a fun feature to have, but one that would be best without a character reward.

Lol as soon as I read that I looked for your location and sure enough its Canada.
There is only one problem. I think you would need mini-seasons of sorts. The playoffs work because #1 plays #8. If #1 played #2 .... #7 played #8 it would make it so much easier for less worthy teams to make it to the finals. In that way, if the 2 best players randomly were matched together things would get a little messed up. So...
Something like 16 people are assigned at the appropriate tier of fighting. Random fights (2 or 3 with each other player) happen and then players are ranked according to that performance. Then at a certain time during the day players enter the tournament with those same players.
I would like to keep tournaments to one per day or so for a few reasons but mainly so there is only one winner of the top tier. It makes it an accomplishment that people can talk about. If you just pvp all day no one really cares who wins one fight. Having potentially 60+ duels in a row can be tiring though. There would still be plenty of non-tournament options.
I guess another possibility is just free for all random fighting to establish appoximate rank for the day/week/whatever. Then when the daily/weekly/whatever tournament begins players are divided into groups of 16/32/whatever and the tournament goes from there. You would need a certain number of duels to enter (say 10+ since the last tournament). And the tournament itself would be best of 5/7/whatever.
It might also be really fun to have staged fights. Parties fight together against monsters reminiscent of the colloseum.
Would also be cool if you could watch fights or even bet on them. Also, NO LEVEL DIVISIONS! Any level can enter but will be matched against any level.
My only fear is that since each build will be geared for a specific purpose the fights would end up being based more on the luck of what build you're matched against than with skill. I'd like to see it where the best pvper will consistently win. Forgive me if none of this makes sense. I'm tired.
BTW: exodite, who you rooting for? (i assume from your post youre a fan of the sport)

Apparently freezing yourself is fatal. HOW ARE YOU PEOPLE COPING?!
LOL, I just thought of a funny game mode within the gladiator arena that could be really fun for obvious reasons: DOTA (defense of the ancients) style mode with 5v5 diablo players (your bnet players) facing off.
I would like TEAM DEAD MATCHES yes, that's how it's called. Not DOTA.
And don't talk about it as if it was it's own game.
Dota is a map for the game called Warcraft 3, that has tons of better maps then Dota.
Dota is just a weak rip off from good AoS maps. Remember that.
EDIT:
Dota has nothing to do with your idea.
- It has waves of soldiers going to the enemy base.
- Their are bases to protect.
- You respawn etc.
It has nothing to do with you idea, sorry that I had to bring that to you.
LOL, are you kidding? I don't think you read my post because if you did, then you would realize that it has everything to do with my idea. My idea is that by having this "arena" place is that it would open a portal to MANY DIFFERENT GAME MODES. You could have a game mode called "Chase the Monkey!" if you wanted to. The point is that the programmers would choose game modes that are fitting and fun. Now, DOTA as it stands now, could not be implemented directly into a system like this, however, its skeletal idea could be used. DOTA is, in fact, a team deathmatch of sorts, but with extra elements like protecting your base. I am sorry man, but you either didn't read my post, or you don't understand what I said. FAIL!

Incase anyone doesn't understand the format this picture should help, just assume its players not hockey teams

Bahhah.. A Canadian would relate diablo 3 to hockey. Anyways yes, I agree, this would be a good way of handling a tourney type pvp style.
PS. Go Canucks! =p
