I don't think they set out to destroy the core feeling of the game. They said that it was one of the things they wished to preserve. What I think has happened is that they attempt to demonstate the feeling less thematically and more viscerally. I think they're trying to set the mood, and then let your own imagination fill in. Unfortunately for Blizzard, many have grown found of Diablo's gothic theme and shy from seeing it presented through different means. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, but with a series that is eight years old, they need to breath life into it. In this case it means colour and art design some are not familiar or comfortable with. They are attempting to relate with a larger audience and, to some loyal Diablo fans, it feels almost alien.
As for the visual redesigns, they said that it just didn't work. What I'm assuming is that using the old system didn't allow for as much flexibility in the storytelling department. Imagine using the D2 set of lighting and colours and trying to portray something moving in the darkness. It would be harder. However, with the current colours and lights you can see the sillouette of the SiegeBreaker in the background. Combine that with a gaurd panicking about something being alive down here, and you have a palpable mood to work with. Darkness and realism don't always help the feel.
I looked up some Titanquest images, and most don't seem to have nearly the number of mobs that Diablo or it's sequal had in them. I also don't think we'll be waiting that long for this game. It has been in development for 4 years and they've said that at least all of Act1 and all of the class are playable.
In this case, yes. It was what Blizzard chose to do, and they even tried it the normal way.
Unfortunately their principles are flawed, they seem to have taken an attitude to darkness that resembles old western movies, where because of the short comings in decent cameras they put a blue/green filter over daytime footage to make it look like night. Darkness doesn't look like darkness unless its...dark.
Petitions don't work 95% of the time, and they sure as hell won't work for blizzard
They think because blizzard cares about what their fans say, that they will completely change their art design
Keep dreaming randoms
wow great reason, we should all do nothing and sit back watching our favorite game of all time getting cartoonized and accept it
thats what you say right?
i just read in someone signature here in this forums, i really liked
it was something along the lines: "the most common reason why someone lost his power is becouse they dont belive they have it"
gotta search for that sig
Only problem I had with graphics initially was that I felt I might feel like I am playing Titan Quest while playing diablo 3. I dont like titan quest. Then I realized I didnt like titan quest because of graphics I didnt like it because of gameplay. And I looked more closer at gameplay while watching the 20min gameplay video and I was blown away. It is SO awesome that we get to spam skills and there is very low downtime invovled in gameplay, and there is no stupid potting potting potting all the time either. Just magnificent. So many skills can be used and are useful, I just can't wait!
Although the dark SCREENSHOTS do you look good in still screens, I have yet to see a dark video that actually looks GOOD.
There is one on youtube, but the dark version is quite horrible and basically black/brown/redish
Many people are claiming that the there are cute little rabbits, so this cannot be Diablo 2.
This is ignorant, because if you zoom in you will find that the Rabbits have fangs, red bulging eyes and are actually the Mortal Embodiment of Cthulu. This is why in the gameplay vid, when the female characters are being shown, the Barbarian in the background Squishes one.

He detected its pure evil.
Here is a link to an interview with the art director about it.

He speaks about it at the very beginning.
Some examples are in the video. They pretty much darkened up the entire game because fans wanted it.
