I like the added weather effect with the rain. But i think the colors are fine. I couldn't stnd how everything in d2 had the same color and design.. so extremely boring and repetitive.... The game takes place 20 years after baal/diablo were defeated... everything i becoming peaceful and bette again.. I can't believe you ignorant selfish dumbasses are complaining about the artwork when you're lucky they're een making the game finally. People are so stupid. god damn.

[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC] Erase Those Who Corrupt the Earth with Violence and Crime. Give the Weak Something to Hope For...
The colouring may be a very big part of the issue but what adds to the elements I listed before are the proportions of design. Everything is designed akin to the Warcraft proportions: feet are HUGE, bricks are HUGE and shoulders are HUGE (the barbarian is even wearing pauldrons that look exactly like an orc grunt's).
In the more gritty and realistic approach to the earlier Diablos' art direction, characters didn't have excessively over-sized hands and feet and bricks were realistically sized. The stone blocks in the gameplay trailer were more reminiscent of the Scarlet Monastery/Undercity than anything previously presented in a Diablo game.
I agree that conforming to a completely greyscale colour scheme would be a bad move, but I also think the current colour use went too far in the other extreme: the WoW colour palettes.
I think my previous post describing an artistic analogy probably describes my concerns better.
I honestly hope Blizzard realizes the detriments of IP ambiguity. Since the company is now a lot larger than it was when most of the games we love were created (and most of the people responsible for those games no longer work for the company), they may just want to listen to "whining" fans that see things from another perspective... or not. No one is infallible.
i highly doubt they're going to change the artistic direction as much as people suggest. From what they said the only thing they're going to be busy with is content and balance.
they know how to do things. they did it before. They wont let a few fans scared of evolution to affect the creation of what seems to be a great game after its first display.
Other than a few models, its their use of coloring that is their problem. They don't seem to realize that even though their graphics are amazing, their choice of coloring just does not have the same Diablo feel to it. Turn down the green dungeons (they look like the Sunken Ruins from WoW), remove the rainbows (unless it is part of the storyline somehow ), and make the environment fit the lore (dried blood stains, not fresh, and skeletons of decayed heroes in tristram).
As for art, worry about that later. Simple character fixes such as scaling and remodeling can be done the future. Worry more about the environment, if nothing is changed or realized now by Blizzard, it will would delay the game release or make no change at all since they would have to redo the whole Diablo World rather than just a character.
I aggree with Jaru5, but i mean when u look at it its freaking discusting, we waited so long to get something unique like the past diablos, and now we get this bs that looks like world of warcraft but with just a different interface...its cheap if you ask me... what made diablo unique and popular was the fact that it was not cartoonish and it was unique in its genre... dark fantasy, end of the story. But whatever i mean, it is defenetly about money obviously. and all im saying is that its not fair.

Cartoonish? CARTOONISH??! DID YOU SEE ALL THE GODDAMN BLOOD DURING THAT BOSSFIGHT??!
CARTOONISH?!!
You people seriously make me sick to my stomach.
And the whole 'unique' business seriously makes me laugh. Oh, dark medieval fantasy with zombies and a dark and gritty atmosphere! You don't see that much anymore! (PROTIP: Look at any next-gen game post 2003)
What's the point of a deep and dank dungeon if the whole world were one deep dank dungeon? There's no contrast! It's pointless! Diablo II, while a classic, has some of the most drab and repetitive visuals seen this side of the 1990s.
WAKE UP! I know you want Diablo III to be like you, (dark, mysterious and trying desperately to be cool) but thankfully, Blizzard wants to actually make a, you know, nice looking game.
personally I think you guys are expecting too much, the main priority is the content of the gameplay not the graphics.
While I have since decided that I am extremely happy with what the game currently is, I have to disagree with this.
If graphics were unimportant, they could simply release an update to Diablo II. I also understand that that graphics aren't the most important thing, or I'd still be playing Diablo I. I was hoping Diablo III would be a combination of Diablo I graphics (updated to todays standards) with Diablo II game play.
However, it appears to keep the game play with a new direction for graphics. I think the first level looked phenomenal when I witnessed it for the first time, so I just want them to release the game as soon as possible. Even if it took two seconds to change the color scheme, that would be two seconds to long to push back the release date/time.

That said, there's something special about the feeling of hopelessness in a bright, vibrant atmosphere.
Seeing burning demons crash through a beautiful landscape is a fantastic contrast that I'm glad Blizzard is going with instead of listening to all the fail in this thread.
I am much more willing to trust a company that has produced 3 best selling franchises...
If van gogh came back and drew a stick figure, would you pay a million dollars for it? One of Blizzards strong points is listening to it's consumers (I've heard something about them changing the art for SC2?). I for one say they've done a fantastic job. My point is you really can't take that stance or use that as a point of contention. Then it sounds like you only like it because it came from Blizzard and it could have been anything.
I have to agree with the fact that it is not scary enough for me. Don't change the mechanics and overall graphics, but just change the colors around. TBH i think the game would be perfect save the fact that it is just not dark and foreboding enough. Sure 20 years have past, that doesnt mean the earth heals itself back to life, the world can be scared forever...cause when u think about it THREE PRIME EVILS unleashed their influence upon Sanctuary, one would think the scars might be everlasting.
"I've signed the petition and registered over here to express my anger over the graphical style of this so called "Diablo sequel". First let me explain my theory as to why I think Blizzard decided to go towards this artistic direction : It's all about the MONEY. You see ,ever since the major sucess of World of Warcraft, Blizzard wants to bring in all the WoW addicts into their futur products ! Thus they are doing similar (familiar for the WoWers) graphical styles for SC2 and D3, this way it will definitely catch the eye of the WoWer.
Well Blizzard is definately doing it for the money, you're right about that. Sorry, but I don't think ANY game company makes games PURELY for the sake of the fans. They want to create a game that looks visually appealing to both older and newer players. And you have to understand that Diablo II was EIGHT YEARS AGO. It utilized some truly boring and repetitive palettes, and the drab range of colors used sometimes made the game look 'murky'. Even though we haven't seen a Diablo game for a while, we have seen other similar dungeon crawlers such as Titan Quest or Dungeon Siege, both which changed the overall definition of the genre, which Diablo III will have to contend with to be a decent game.
There is also the psychological effect of vivid COLOURS : they are very apealing to YOUNG KIDS, which are ,let's face it, the majority of players in WoW.
DID YOU NOT SEE THE FOUNTAINS OF BLOOD??! And if you actually play WOW, you would know that the majority of players are older people who just ACT immature like little kids. The 15 dollar a month fee filters out a lot of younger players.
Another thing also about why they are doing simplistic graphics is because it's fast and cheap, (Yeah cheap, you'd think that with all these billions they'd at least invest in programming more complex graphics...) and most IMPORTANTLY : It's less HARDWARE demanding ! What this means from a GREEDY point of view : MORE people will buy the game , because there are still consumers out there with poor/old computers and it is a profitable MARKET...
This is probably the most ASS-HEADED part of your so-called 'argument'.
Once again, I'd like to point out that the point of creating Diablo III IS TO MAKE MONEY.
I'm sorry, but most of America don't have super high-end computers that can run everything at full settings. They want the MAJORITY of the consumers to be able to appreciate all the fine details while playing the game. If that means lower-poly models, so be it. It also doesn't mean in anyway that the graphics are 'cheap'. Artists say it all the FUCKING time. ART DIRECTION OVER POLYGONS. Some of the coolest looking games are last-gen PS2 software that don't rely on a high-polygon count or HD lighting. (Shadow of the Colossus being a prime example.)
In fact, I'd say it's you who's being greedy. You want the game ALL TO YOUR GODDAMN SELF, and don't want to share it with anyone who isn't as 'uber' as you are. Well guess what bucko? Times are changing, games are changing. With the popularity of consoles far outweighing PCs, developers have to make decisions that will make releasing software into the market still be profitable. Thankfully, Blizzard knows very well that you don't need AMAZIN' GRAFICKS to make a good looking game.
As a true Diablo fan, I'm really disappointed by the current state of the D3 graphical engine, not only because of it's cartoonish style but because also of the lack of NEXT-GEN eye-candy in the game. (For a game which is supposed to be out in 2009, it really looks OLD-GEN) This game should have had Bump mapping (Or even better Parallax mapping!), motion blur, self-shadowing, shader effects for reflections, etc but most importantly : A complex LIGHTING system with real-time dynamic shadows which would really shine in dark dungeons and give a sense of TRUE DIABLOesque FEELING !"
You're not a true Diablo fan, stop lying. If you were a true Diablo fan, you'd want the series to continue to evolve, both visually and mechanically. If you were a true Diablo fan, you'd wait and see more than alpha footage and screenshots. If you were a true Diablo fan, you'd want the game to be accessible to a wider audience in order to increase the popularity of the series. If you were a true Diablo fan, you wouldn't be spouting this BULLSHIT.
That's the thing that pisses me the most : WoW style graphics for Maximum PROFIT.
Oh please, you just like being spoon fed by Blizzard. If you really want it to evolve into a WoW gimmick then you are NOT a TRUE Diablo fan. You are the one who's BSing.
Wow. If you don't like Diablo 3 then you're really not going to like the Diablo MMO coming out in 3-4 years.

Seriously, stop your complaining. Each franchise has gone through the transition. WarCraft did, StarCraft did, and now it's Diablo's turn.
OF COURSE IT IS. WHY THE FUCK DO YOU THINK THEY MAKE GAMES?!! BECAUSE OF FUCKING CHARITY?
THEY USE A GRAPHICAL STYLE THAT THEY THINK WILL ENTICE THE MOST USERS.
AND SINCE WHEN DID DIABLO II EVER LOOK LIKE GEARS OF FUCKING WAR??!
Cartoonish? CARTOONISH??! DID YOU SEE ALL THE GODDAMN BLOOD DURING THAT BOSSFIGHT??!

The video game itself is a contrast to real life.
You guys just got Bob Ross'd by Blizzard. Color is your friend.
Seriously guys, have you walked outside before? Even on dark, stormy days, the grass is still green and the trees are still brown.
If you want everything to look drab like Diablo II, change your monitor settings. THERE! BLACK AND WHITE!
