I'm having difficulty choosing which armor is better.
Sometimes, all of the stats in an item's description tell me it's better; higher overall armor, higher Intelligence (I'm using Witch Doctor), higher bonus armor, more useful perks.
But in the game's quick analysis (those little green up arrows or red down arrows that say whether attack/armor/life are superior or inferior to what you have equipped), it will say that another inferior-looking piece of armor is actually better in those aspects.
So, should I trust my own judgments, or is the game always right in telling you which armor is better?
The game isn't always right cause of different legendary bonuses , but doesn't sound like your judgment is top notch either. better to join a clan or community and link in game and ask the more experienced players
if you could base your decision on the tooltip and the green or red numbers alone, we would not need a forum to discuss all kinds of stuff for min / maxing stats.
1) its difficult
2) it requires common sense (many have none)
3) the tooltip is an indicator ,nothing more. The game is only crunshing the numbers not making an educated suggestion.
4) decisions on which item is better should most often be based on what you want to achieve not whats on the tooltip.
example: If you play a WD and you find an armor which gives you +5% toughness but removes a 15% haunt damage (witch doctor jade doc speaking) you have a choice. Will you accept the loss in damage for a chance to survive longer?
Well you should not , because Jade doc is based on perma immunity and smart play style using your cooldowns. It is not about toughness.
If you die often as a jade doc there are two reasons : you are not good enough playing the build or you have too little cooldown reduction.
Thats just an example, dont take it personally if i hit a spot here.
Edit: it sounds like you are a console player , so if you have questions, write down the stats of both items, and ask here. - However since we cannot see the whole character we might still give you the wrong advice, because it cannot often be decided based on comparing the two items in question directly.
Yes, if you intent to play this game to the best of your ability, some out of game research will be required. Find out which stats benefit you most or least. Find out if you have breakpoints to aim for on certain stats, etc. While leveling, it rarely matters much. End game, much of it is already mathed out. For instance, if you are playing crusader, attack speed has very minimal impact, but the sheet damage inflates the value, so you know a piece with attack speed is not worth as much as the tooltip claims. However, you need a total of 56% cooldown reduction. That isn't added into any of the tooltip calculations so a piece with CDR is worth more than the tooltip claims.
As a WD, you need to know the builds. Pet doc uses attack speed to increase the rate at which the pets attack. Jade does not because attack speed doesn't affect dots. The tooltips neither know nor care about those differences. They merely multiply damage by attacks per second and give you the result. Similarly, the int you naturally collect applies to your resistances. Armor, however, is increased by str or dex, so not something you would wear. This makes bonus armor actually potentially better than the tooltip indicates and resistance may be less useful. This can make the toughness on tooltips deceptive.
