Hey guys, just about to hit Inferno and have a pretty basic question to ask that I'am sure I've gotten the answer wrong with.
Currently I have very little resist stats so once I hit inferno time for a total gear upgrade.
My problem is, I think, the way I perceive what I'am trying to do here.
So far when I upgrade anything I look for something that has more strength everytime, I have this dps thing locked into my head.
I look at other stats too but everything is secondary to strength/dps.
At Act 4 in Hell I have around 4k dps unbuffed and 35k health, the health is a fluke I didnt consciously try to build that much but its worked out well.
I have around 300 life on hit so at this point I'am doing ok.
But...when I go to look at resist gear shortly do I look at the stats for that over strength?
So therefore my dps will drop but I guess in exchange I'll have more survivability.
Cant dps if I'am dead.
But is that how I should be looking at Inferno, not so much strength driven but moreso look at resists and life on hit, vitality as well?
I know people talk about balance but again that dps thing triggers inside my head and all I can see is dps dps dps.
So gear wise what should I prioritize and dps is a little further down the chain?
Also I tried dual wielding tonight and everything melted but struggled a bit on blue mobs funnily enough, for Inferno do I go back to sword and board?
With the damage nerf will 2 single handers be enough now, the attack speed bonus is still noticeable.
Thanks for any help

Even in the heart of Heaven angels can still feel fear...
Everything works since 1.0.3 you still want all resist, strength, vitality on most pieces but more dps oriented without shield is perfectly fine if you have the gear for it.
well, first off, if you only have 4k dps after finishing hell its fair to assume, you need a new weapon I had 10k dps with 2 250 dps 1h weapons (granted, that was self buffed with battle rage)
and you basically answered your question as well..the balance is important...after the patch it is all much easier and you don't need so much defense anymore, but general rule of thumb still applies...stack as much defense as you need to stay alive, rest is dps
how much dmg/def is possible just depends on the money you have stacked my advice for act 1 blues do fine as well...get one with resi all + high str and another piece with resi all + high vit...probably cheaper. most important for act 1...weapon..around 500 dps should suffice with enought strenght, the more the better for later acts you start stacking crit + crit damage as well as getting items with str + vit + resi all + other things
and yeah, dual wielding / 2h is fine ...maybe put in some loh
i finished act1 with 2.5 k dps...was NO fun at all, but doable...i would sugest aiming at roughly 6-7 k dps
Ta guys, buffed I have just under 8k dps now and thats with a sword and board.
I went back to the shield and that seemed to stop the blue mob issue I was having.
Use blues really?
I've been in yellows since lvl 10 lol, I know thier cheaper and all and the AH is so over inflated its not funny (130 million for a sword yesterday) but I dont mind spending the gold on something that I'am going to keep for awhile and at 60 when I get there I wont have to level anymore.
I'll try dual wielding again in act 1 in Inferno when I get there, pre patch a lot of people said it wasnt feasible but when I tried it tonight in Hell it was huge.
I read pre patch you needed around 500-700 resists all for acts 1 and 2 and between 800-1k for acts 3 and 4.
I'am guessing thats not the case anymore?
That little voice in my head that loves his dps will be really happy to hear that
As a minimum 7k dps would get me how far before I needed to upgrade to get to act 4?
Just trying to work out what dps/resists all numbers I'am going to need to get through Inferno.
Thanks again guys, appreciate the help.

Frankly, i liked the thinking suggested in the other guides here:
amulet, rings, helm, weapon, gloves and braces = DPS oriented, you can get crit, crit dmg, str and some defensive stats
belt, boots, legs, chest and shoulders are your primary defensive stacking slots because they do not have any DPS stats besides str.
If you get even blue items with this coordination you will have a decent amount of DPS and defensive stats giving you a nice balanced character. For example, the second set of items you can just get high armor + all resist + vit, blue items, that's it.
The first set you can get str + crit / crit dmg and some vit if available randomly.
If you do that you can easily start inferno A1 with blue items which should total in may be 500k-1mil tops.

"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."
For Act 1, I would shoot for around 200-300 unbuffed resists. If you take War Cry with Impunity that will put you at about 300-450 which should be fine for act 1. I wouldn't neglect strength, but it sounds like you're gonna want a new weapon as 4k dps is quite low. Try to get up to around 7-10k for sword and board, you're gonna want higher if you're doing a 2h in order to burst the mobs down before they kill you. Just make sure to stay above about 30k hp while doing all of this, aiming a bit higher if you're using a 2h. I would also highly recommend gearing out either your enchantress or your scoundrel in gear with a ton of their primary stat (int or dex). You can do pretty well for about 250k to get your companion some 150+ primary stat gear in each slot, which will considerably improve your kill speed.
Is 7.5k with Battle Rage included going to do it or do you mean 7k dps plus Battle Rage?
The first I have, the second I dont.
Considering I did Act II with about 8k DPS as a tank spec pre-nerf I think you'll be fine in Act I with 7k or 7.5k, assuming you have proper defense. Since you're thinking about dual-wielding, try stacking Life on Hit, IAS, and Crit/Crit Damage for damage stats and Vit/All Resist for defense. You should be fine with the aforementioned ~500 Resist and anything around 20-30k health. The Life on Hit and fast attack speed from Frenzy will really help your sustain.
Also, what companion are you using? If you use the Enchantress, her DPS is nothing to forget about, if you use the templar, he's pretty bad as he is just dead all the time because of plague/molten/every other AoE that could possibly hurt him.
Plus her armor buff is excellent. Though if you want pure DPS the scoundrel has the crit buff.
on my barb, im running with 200-300 res, 7.2k armor, 19k dps, 21k hp.
Clearing act1 no problem and skipping no elite packs. it's a bit ruff every now and than and i die sometimes,
My abilities are berserker, revenge, earthquake, ignore pain, frenzy, warcry, passives are ruthless, weaponmaster and the one you get 25% more damage at max fury.
