Clean, un-detailed, brightly lit dungeons (with really awful looking statues) without a spec of darkness, death and decay & beautiful autum trees in a lush grassy field with rainbows do not scream "Diablo". The dungeon shown in the trailer is supposed to be underneath Tristram... it does not look like ANYTHING that was supposed to be that horrible, bloody, dreadful place we adventured through in D1 (or like any dungeon in D2 even). I also didn't like the non-inclusion of light radius, it shouldn't be lit all over like that. The outdoor enviroment area shown seemed like the Barbarian and Witch Doctor where taking a picnic only then to be assulted by some skeleton bullies who wanted their sandwiches. None of those places in the trailers filled me with "dispair, fear or dread" like they should supposed to. They did not convey a "Diablo" mood or reaction.
You have to consider what this video was for. It was created to be shown on a huge screen in front of hundreds of people to show off a new game. The lack of a light radius makes sense in this situation because they want people to SEE the whole game. I wouldn't automatically jump to the conclusion that the light radius has been eliminated--it seems more likely that they simply eliminated it for this presentation.
I do miss the scattered dead bodies and bloody stains of previous dungeons. This one does seem fairly spotless for being a dungeon. I'm not sure how easy that is to rectify later. Again, this could've been just a way to showcase the game play a little better, but it seems less likely.

Santuary is supposed to be a dark and dreary world, a world filled with fear and depression - with death, blood, sorrow, horrible things everywhere (you get the idea...), this is HELL invading, after all (and even before then, Sanctuary never seemed dandy in the 1st place). It should be like the past 2 Diablo games before it, not like Azeroth. When I play D2, the environments in there look way more detailed and fitting then D3's. D2, an 8 year old game, looks a hellava lot better than D3 does ATM. D2 conveys the whole mood it should.
If you read through the website and some of the "journals" it does have the one character saying that Tristram was not nearly as frightening as he had been lead to believe. I got back to the idea that they're incorporating a broader storyline in DIII. It's 20 years after DII. Things in Tristram and Sanctuary have been cleaned up a bit by people trying to move on and forget the past. In my mind, it makes perfect sense for these areas to not YET be dreary. The demonic forces are just beginning to make their presence felt.
This is a very early stage in the game. Blizzard has given themselves the opportunity to crank up the darkness and despair as the game progresses. Which can act to heighten the player's involvement in the game - you see the world deteriorating in front of you getting even more caught up in the frightening scenarios.

Also, I feel the armour could use some work. Please no huge shoulders, I hated that in WoW (and those shoulders on the Barbarian look exactly like a pair of shoulders from WoW...). It looks really dumb. I detest shoulder slot armour as well. And, the Witch Doctor does indeed look too much like a Troll WD from Warcraft. A very poor decision for a playable class in DIABLO. (I know there is a Witch Doctor unique mob in D2, but that is something entirely different.)
I agree that some of the armor appears to be a little over-the-top. There's definitely an over-exaggerated sense to some of the armor and character styling.
But to say a Witch Doctor is a poor decision for a diablo game doesn't make any sense. It fits the mythos of the game, since there were witch doctor and jungle characters in the jungles around Kurast. The Witch Doctor is no more random than a Druid or Necromancer. They're expanding the game and story in a way that makes sense and brings a fresh set of skills and gameplay to the universe.

Imo, Blizzard is trying to cater to the WoW fanbase too much because they think it would make them all play it. ... Its like a kick in the face to all us old Diablo fans. But then again... no one from the original Diablo series team is still with Blizzard, right?... that could explain... and thats what im afraid of. I hope the lore/story doesn't turn out as bad as the "art direction".
Blizzard understands the power of this franchise. I guarantee that a considerable amount of thought (and probably research) has gone into all of the decisions they've made for the game. In the end, they have to make a game that appeals to the largest market.
Remember that Diablo was released in 1996 and Diablo II in 2000. So, you got into this game series anywhere from 8 to 12 years ago. So ultimately, this game originally appealed to someone 8 to 12 years younger than you are now. To some degree, a game does have to evolve with its fan base. However, if you cater only to your fan base without attracting newer, younger fans, you're dead in the water (example: know anybody under 55 years old who buys a Buick?).
In the end, these guys know how to make a game that's fun for the fans and profitable for them--they have lots and lots of examples to prove it. They're doing what they can to satisfy the "old Diablo faithful" as well as a generation of new gamers.
I'm not saying you should just blindly swallow everything they throw at us, but you really have to accept the idea that every single decision they make isn't going to please you.
Well first of all, they have made Diablo III finaly and what does blizzard get? complains, WOOT! OH NO! a statue looks to cartoony!!!! i'll bet u want even see it when u play the game after release, and they even said they made the game brighter, that means so u can make the contrast higher to get it darker and still see the whole dungeon, whit out maxed lightradius.
Anyway i'll bet the game will be greatand it will be played for a loooooong time
As long as the Tilesets are not Dark, Bland, Boring, and Repetitive, I'm good on the Art. I am glad their bringing in color, after buying ( unfortunately ) and playing Hellgate:London for 2 weeks, the ugly, dark, bland, gloomy, repetitive Tilesets really got to me, I lost complete interest and uninstalled the game. I hope to never see Tilesets like that used again.
ok.. cartoony world or not.. i ll buy it cuz.. u know.. we all needs to play it!
... i cryed when i saw Diablo III the first time... its so beautiful *-*
I see colors everyday, I can contrast Diablo III to them, not other colors in Diablo III. LAME. But I really would rather have a sooner release date than more darkness.
Everyones in a hissy fit about the lack of darkness, but no one has seen the night cycle yet either, which I don't care much for because it makes everything look colorless and bland like in Titan Quest for example.
If you want more darkness, turn down the gamma, turn down the brightness, turn down the contrast, nuff said, no more whining..good day
I don't think it's whining at all, it's constructive criticism. As a theme, Diablo has been a hack 'n' Slash action rpg set in a dark horror-fantasy driven world (with slight noir undertones), Diablo III looks to be set in a supernatural fantasy world with a dab of horror. (at least that's my take on it from the game play trailer.)
To me, Diablo was all about the feeling of fear (not so much DII though) and that's what made it special (a lot like the Aliens game where you wouldn't know where the next Alien was, until it was almost crawling up your backside.) the feeling of fear can be generated in many ways, and in terms of gaming, it's through the use of being unaware of your surroundings and what's around the next corner, through the use of low light and lots of shadows, the uncertainty of death/losing, sounds which give clues of what's beyond the darkness, twisted music which adds to the darkness, etc..
I don't really feel Diablo III has any of these traits as far as the trailer's concerned.
I for one would dislike the game if these "darkness" qualities were not added, but a lot of the people here who are trying to silence us from disputing these differences wouldn't really care if it were dark or bright. I've hardly come across a single post which a user has explained how they would rather this "new" feel to the older, darker one.

Diablo- The first game i ever played for the PC in 1997. Diablo 2- The first online game i ever played in 2001.
I do not understand what those petitioners are really complaining about, jeez. I mean, okay, the environment's not dark and murky and whatever, so what? The new environments maybe, are based on the storyline, and it needs to be on the lighter side, hmm, we may never know.. But I'm against on the cartoony aspect of it, I agree that it should be themed more diabolically. And if Blizzard wants to change it, they'll change it, there's nothing we can do but to wait, and wait, and wait. Ooh, I can't wait, I want to play it now!:P
I've read posts in this forum, as well as several others. A lot of the people either can't speak or write proper English, or I'm guessing are under 12. I've seen a lot of people criticize people when they say the art looks too cartoonish, which is a very childish act. Honestly I am very disappointed as to the way they decided to take the art direction. Several aspects set the mood of a game. Diablo has always been about fighting the undead, demons, and the such. To be fighting such aforementioned things, and see a rainbow and waterfall and the background greatly disappoints me. Darkness, and eeriness being the major aspects that I expect from a game with a title "Diablo". With that title I associate a Gothic feel, which coincides with the mood very well. I would have to agree with people who have said it before, Diablo III has a WoW feel to it. And with that I picture a very unrealistic game, with very polished feel to it. A game like Diablo III should be gritty, and have a feel we have associated with the Diablo Franchise. And I disagree with the many people who say we should just grit our teeth and deal with it, because "blizzard won't change the artistic direction". If the disappointment is near universal in the fan base, it should create enough of a ripple for blizzard to take notice. And those who have said we only saw a portion of the game, and cannot judge it. I will have to remind you that it started out in a dungeon, a place of darkness and death. Which none of which were apparent in the game play trailer.
Blizzard, just change the art direction. If people want to play WoW, go play WoW. I am serious. I love D2, and the Diablo universe as a whole. I don't want to play WoW, I never have, and I never will.
If you want the same success as Diablo 2 enjoyed. Then don't disappoint your core fans.

After all, wouldn't it seem odd that they'd put the Coup De Grace in level 1?

Nothing happens to you, but everything happens for you.
YOu all do know that they can acomplish more with a slightly cartoonish look then a realistic look, they talking about it in an interview. take the barb for example, it's very hard to make a realistic charecter pull a gigantic hammer out of his a$$ and swing it in .2 seconds, while making it look clean and crisp. Try playing Age of Conan,0 the animations are all lame because they have to be realistic. I would totally take a small hit in graphics for a game that allows me to do off the wall stuff such as the hammer of the ancients, it just gives blizzard more freedom to play with.
Take a look at the OLD whirlwind animation in D2. Was it animated realistically? HELL no. Did it look awesome? HELL YES.
All of you that LIKE the direction the art is going, are either in denial, young, or have never played a Diablo game. Blizzard have said themselves that the game's art style (and BOSS style, even) are heavily influenced by WoW.
Why is this? Because the entire Diablo team, as of now, consists of the WoW team. The people who created Diablo 2 are NOT working on D3. That's right, all we have in hopes for D3 is a bunch of WoW-crazed developers who are overly proud of their WoW graphics and gameplay.
This game is going to look, and possibly feel like World of Warcraft.
It may still be fun, but it will be World of Diablo. Mark my words. In fact, i'm sigging this for when the game actually comes out.

Have you played any games that the developers that originally worked on Diablo II have made since? If not, perhaps you can go check it out as that seems to be the game for you as of the present moment. The art direction has some pros and cons in my opinion and to be quite honest, I really don't care all that much that it looks different. My attachment to the diablo series was for the gameplay, not the art design. I liked the epic feeling of blowing up hordes of demons with rapid fire skills that I could choose from. On a further note, I don't think it's fair to judge the entire game's graphics based on an unfinished product that we haven't even seen 1/100th of the total world. (Don't get scared because I said world, it'll be ok). Furthermore, I don't think it's fair to say if you like the art direction you don't know what you're talking about. That seems like a pretty fruitless argument to me.

"Never played a Diablo game"? You are just hilarious.
The game's art style is heavly influencied by WoW? Hah. I am reallly sad that anyone has just signed that bullshit of changing art direction - 70% doesn't even knew that there WAS an art direction, and 50% doesn't even KNOW what that guys do. That is just pathetic, judging everything just because of 20 minutes of video in a game that will take more than 20 hours to play, at least. The video it's awesome, nevertheless. And it's just like Blizz said - you need contrast. 50000+ bastards that complained about the art direction would be the first ones to complain about the boring game, with repetitive themes and scenario. Want more darkness? Turn off the lights and brightness. Less colors and contrast? Turn off colors and contrast - play the game at black & white. Goddamit. Just pseudogothic-pseudotrue-pseudohardcore kids willing to just make some noise. And I am sure of one thing - of all this people, barely 1000 people really should be listened, and you are NOT one of them. 49000 are just wannabe bastards that believes "criticism is bein' hardcore an' a really Diablu fan an' stuff an' I make part of a thin'". "Mark my words", wannabe "hardcore fans": [I will not sig this for later - in fact, YOU bastards can do this for me. I don't need this stupidity.] if the art direction changes and D3 becames a b&w game, it will be known as the WORST DISASTER for Blizz and you guys will be the ones to blame, pseudotrue and pseudofans. Hope you all burn to ashes.

Here's a fun thought : Why don't you 50,000+ idiots work on the art direction of the game and see where you end up, shall we? Instead of complaining, you shoulf be thanking Blizzard for making an effort to supply us with a new game that we can all enjoy as TRUE DIABLO FANS would. But I guess you're not. You're just here to complain. I love the game, I love the feel of the game. I simply love the Diablo series because of its rich lore and storyline. Don't you agree? Graphics are most things, it's how you interact with the game.
If you aren't happy with interacting with the game you very well aren't going to keep playing it.

This all sounds so stupid if you ask me. blackarts-viper, I couldn't agree with you more.. What the heck is the problems with these complaining so-called Diablo fans? Here's a fun thought : Why don't you 50,000+ idiots work on the art direction of the game and see where you end up, shall we? Instead of complaining, you shoulf be thanking Blizzard for making an effort to supply us with a new game that we can all enjoy as TRUE DIABLO FANS would. But I guess you're not. You're just here to complain. I love the game, I love the feel of the game. I simply love the Diablo series because of its rich lore and storyline. Don't you agree? Graphics isn't everything in a game. Don't be so immature with this. For anyone else who wants to complain, wait for further updates on the developments, until then, SHUT UP!!!

Graphics are most things, it's how you interact with the game.
If you aren't happy with interacting with the game you very well aren't going to keep playing it.
