I can join my friend's IP address, but he can't join mine. He said my IP is weird when I told him it. I'd put it up here but I don't know if that's a good idea or not. In any case, I know it's the right address, it's the one displayed in the menu when I go to host a game (diablo 2, im talking about, if you haven't figured that out yet, lol.) Any ideas?

Trust me. If someone wanted your IP address, they could get it. It's really not that difficult. Since you're paranoid. Does it begin with 192.168.X.X
This is a common issue. It often falls to several key points. Either your firewalls aren't letting traffic through, or your router isn't.
Some times this probably can be fixed by something as simple as installing Hamachi and creating a Virtual Private Network. It seems to override firewall/router settings and makes them work. Well most of the time, it can also be affected by the same problems.
Alternatively you could try it with disabled firewalls, but make sure you do virus scans after you've finished playing, with your walls down your more susceptable to virus attacks.
Or Just try a different computer.
Oh and on the odd occassion its just your connection. I swear one time all I did was change from 56kbps to 100mbps and it worked.
And yes I did use the same IP address, I am aware Dial up (56kbps) will dial up a random IP address each time, but if you were to know what one address it dialed was, then set your much faster connection to use the same IP address, as broadband uses 1 address each time it is connected, well you get my point.

You're a jerk, you know that? Just because I don't know much about IP addresses, and I'm trying to be careful with my information, I'm not paranoid. Thousands of people access this site, I'm just being careful. But yes, now I realize that it is simple to find someone's IP address, so I won't bother with that any more.
In any case, yes, we have 5 computers in our network. I heard something today like the router somehow affects IP's. Is that right? And yes it's 192.168.1.3, and when I look at it on another forum sight I peruse occasionally, and when I googled what my IP address was, I also got 208.101.154.217. Neither of these work when I try to get someone in a game I host. My friend's is oddly a lot different then mine, 65.24.84.57. How come mine is so different? (His works when I enter it to get in a game he hosts, by the way.)
Cool it. Elfens suggestion of Hamachi will be your best bet. The 192.168.X.X is a private network. Basically once upon a time, we were afraid to run out of IP addresses. So we made a private addressing scheme, that way you can have as many PCS as you want in a network, and only one IP address. The IP address you get from the website is your real one, but it's not yours, it's your Routers IP address. The only way to host a game is through some form of VPN to trick your PC into thinking it's part of someone elses network.
Your friends router/modem does NOT hide his ip address. His IP address is real, he's not in a private network. That's why it works.

Look into hamachi.
basicly what w00tstick said is correct. the 192.168.1.x is ur routers private subnet. U need ur comps actual ip address

His comp would be a private IP address as part of the private subnet. There's nothing he can do directly, unless he wants to change ISPs. Only thing he can do is use VPN as directed.
If you go there it tells you everyone's IP Address. Your IP address is fairly common knowledge.

Refer to your router's instruction manual for details (and contacting your ISP may also help), but most routers use web browser based configuration. To do this, enter your router's local/private IP address into your web browser. Most router addresses are either 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1, but you can find your router's address under Network in System Preferences.
If you're using an AirPort Base Station as a router, you can configure it with the AirPort Admin Utility in the Applications folder. You can get the ISP ip address from http://www.ip-details.com/
