warcraft wasn't always embarrassing to look at, though how they went from THIS to THIS
I have no idea.. well actually I kind of do, they found out what appealed to girls and the pokemon crowd and capitalized.
To this day I still can not fathom the ignorance of the masses who jumped to the insane conclusion that since some of the developers from D2 worked on Hellgate, henceforth Hellgate is D3.
Equally absurd is the idea that only the developers of D2 can make D3. May very well turn out that D3 is everything D2 should have been, but now 10x better. Nor is there any thought that quite possibly the D2 team could have made a worse clone of D3. Keep in mind that their original work was trashed, and the new team started from scratch. We have know way of knowing just how awfuly they could have made D3.
Besides, these are not great pieces of art now are they, they are just video games.
From Flagship Studios – creators of the award-winning Diablo® series and the fathers of the action role playing genre – comes Hellgate: London, the next benchmark in the evolution of the RPG genre.
Flagship Studios is a creator of innovative entertainment software, designing games that focus on ease of play, replay-ability, and fun. The studio was formed in 2003 by former executives and developers from Blizzard North® and represents the creators of the worldwide, best-selling Diablo® franchise. With members that are renowned within the gaming industry, Flagship Studios and Flagship Seattle embody a team that has worked together for over a decade and have numerous #1-selling games and multiple Game of the Year awards to their credit.
That's from their website. They shot themselves in the foot basically. It wasn't that no one cared about the Hellgate: London lore. It's the fact this it was boring and that it sucked.
- Boring game offering great visual, but very little in terms of variation. The randomness of the game was laughable and the scenarios were so boring. City/Sewer/Park/Ditch
- Subscription service really segregated the free users. Basically you had to pay to get anywhere in the game and have fun. Not to mention they killed many things that would have made the subscription service more wanted and still could have kept the free users.
- The game is BORING offering very few skills and the classes were just not fun to play. I felt like playing FEAR after playing Hellgate.
They banked on the fact that HEY! WE MADE DIABLO EVERYONE! And everyone believed them and said that this "Diablo Clone" would literally be Diablo 3. Too bad their Diablo Clone didn't even live up to the same standards as most of them. I found Titan Quest a lot more fun than HGL. Mythos was the same way. After being in the beta all I felt like doing was playing Diablo 3 because Mythos was the same way... a clone that just wasn't up to par.
Granted I give them credit for trying, and they did make a slightly entertaining game, but I saw this coming right from the beginning. HGL was just over hyped, and they are the ones that caused it.
I am not going to say that if Blizzard North were back that Diablo would be gritty and shit because Hellgate had tons of lighting. and was not dark at all. In fact the only dark level you had was the one where it was pitch black. I think even the old Dev team realized what you can do with lighting.

Sorry, but this is just wrong. The work was not "trashed". It was built upon, revised, edited. They say that they had "rebooted", but I doubt that it meant that they "started from scratch."
Yes but that was simply what games were like back then, listening to it now it does sound a bit silly, but back when it was released I remember watching it over and over thinking how amazing it looked and how awesome the music was! (still like the music though) The narration wasn't the point however, back then they were aiming for a grim world with the orcs and goblins being an evil force that had to be fought back, even if the in-game graphics were sort of lumpy. That obviously completely changed.

Eh, what probably set me off was Kung-Fu Panda's intro. It was similar to that of WCII's, but it was clear that it was a joke. It didn't sound so superficial, either...
No.
Time = time.
Money = money.
Time = "the system of those sequential relations that any event has to any other, as past, present, or future; indefinite and continuous duration regarded as that in which events succeed one another."
Money = "any circulating medium of exchange, including coins, paper money, and demand deposits."
"the system of those sequential relations that any event has to any other, as past, present, or future; indefinite and continuous duration regarded as that in which events succeed one another." =/= "any circulating medium of exchange, including coins, paper money, and demand deposits."
Therefore money =/= time.

First Iron Lore (Titan Quest devs), now Flagship Studios...
Of course, Hellgate wasn't the greatest game of all time: the skill/stat system were flawed, the gameplay was flawed, the combat wasn't fun, and the world they created was unconsistent. Such a game could only fail.
And Mythos, well, this game is fun.
But still, those two games are great, for a company that started a few years ago from scratch. And I wish they could have made some more games, because the quality could only have raised. Too bad we won't...
Now the question is: what will happen to Hellgate and Mythos? Will the server close?
I blame the devs themselves. HGL was hyped and ended up being completely lack luster. Titan Quest built in a shitty DRM and then said their downfall was piracy.
Both games had good ideas, but they just wern't implemented well.
This might be harsh but it's not really overly surprising is it? I mean trying to milk HGL players for an extra subsrciption fee for the ability to use the best gear, play online and even just to get updates was a pretty weak move. What made it so special that it had that fee? I think it's quite clear that the majority of gamers didn't see it as worth it, and rightly so, it was an incredibly average game.
If you take a look at Mythos the D3 art haters have to be slightly thankful that those fellas left, or D3 really might have rainbows flying out of its arse.
Errrrr we are talking about Mythos, not D3. Mythos is combining WoW with Diablo and it does that really well. The art fits like a glove. If they'd be making D3 they'd do it more like they did HGL.
I hate rumors, can really bring a company down, even though hellgate London did a lot of mistakes in release, it´s all due to competetion and nothing else, gaming companys these days are heartless and only want money, i think we should congratulate Flagship to try and improve the game instead of just leaving all the bugs.
Congratulate them for what? Being greedy? Overly ambitious?:(
It's actually been happening a LOT lately. Ever since WoW became super successful.
You can actually tell if the next MMO coming out will fail by judging what past games their company has done in order to fund their new project.

OMFG the narrator of the WCII Intro...
It makes me feel nauseated... in a bad way...

Ugh. (spits out blood)
It is exacerbated (tee-hee: exacerbated) that WC is actually a well-known and well-reputed franchise, however.

Women are evil, it doesn't have to be proven mathematically.
However, according to Einstein's fourth law of psychology, evil is akin to badass.

I wouldn't say that, rather, overconfident, perhaps.
Generous with... nothingness! Ohohohohohoho:cute:
5 dollars and EA sticking their finger up your butt.
