The red/blue clickable gem on the D3 website(also known in the old d2 battlenet browser) is actualy Tyraels soulstone? O_o, he gave the first stones to the Horadrim, maybe he mimickec those off his own? I mean if the world stone protected Sanctuary from Hell, then maybe his stone protects him from the same forces, and since the world stone went his stone became corrupted? (you can also see the stone above him in the one desktop backround where it shows tyrael with a quote "and the heavens shall tremble"
Maybe they had a much broader background before they were used as prisons. The worldstone seems to be of the same arcane material used to bind something.
Maybe they were some sort of containment system invented by the Angels or something?
Well, then something could've made them. Remember, Tyrael was a rogue angel. Was it ever said where he got the stones? Maybe he had to go to horrible lengths to get them. Maybe somethng terrible makes stones. Who knows?
....which would go back to the debate that a stone acts as an anchor to something (like sanctuary) first and foremost. I think we are forgetting that we don't know that much about soulstones, except that they can contain demons.
Okay, so rogue is apparently too strong of a word. What with his actions before though, I cannot deny this reason for the use of soulstones by Tyrael, especially if they have been used on anything else besides demons.
Tyrael is not a rogue angel. Not really at least. He's still a part of the Angiris Council.
And angels can hold things because they're magic.
Tyrael said his energies that tied him to this world were fading, if he had a soulstone and was anchored how could that be so?
Well maybe the subsequent soulstones were deeply rooted/related to the world stone which was just (at first polluted) then destroyed. Maybe he bound himself so as to bend his will away from the council, and at the same time creating an alter-ego accidentally in the process( like Link from Zelda or the prince of Persia) which is what we see as the second angel in Diablo 3, i mean we see blue stone, red stone, every time we click, right in the center of his chest :-p It's possible he was tricked by a higher power to generate this alter ego while he was trying to save the humans.
Gamedead's theory.... could work, surprisingly. We don't know enough about soulstones and their potential to determine if thats a plausible action Tyreal would take, so that means it could equally work or not work. Its not too far fetched either. Oh, except I don't believe the chat gem is a soulstone. Its possible that Tyrael does have a soulstone, but I doubt thats it.
Also, I'm sure I read in one of the books that the soulstones are actually just fragments of the Worldstone. We have had discussions about the soulstone/worldstone relationship before, so I'm sure there is evidence somewhere.
"The Soulstones affect only beings that are non-corporeal and thus have no power over living, breathing creatures. When invoked, the Soulstones bring into being a strong "spiritual" vacuum. Any non-physical entities caught within this vacuum are drawn into the burning recesses of the Soulstone and are forever trapped within."
People seem to agree that Tyrael isn't a physical entity, made of light/etc., also if the prime evils can be captured in Soulstones, then I don't see why Angels wouldnt (since they are polar opposites of a similar entity; demons) so we at least know that he is a candidate for entering a soulstone.
Also:
"Although the artifacts were constructed in realms far removed from our own, we found that they were simple to understand." can be a hint to the idea that the soulstones were created in a realm/dimension outside of Heaven, Sanctuary, and Hell.
There is a gate to hell, but we see no gate to heaven so far, which may have been Tyraels motive to use a soulstone as an anchor(either to Sanctuary or the worldstone which was intended to keep heaven and hell out) to bypass any limitations.

Mariah Carey is not a good tag perhaps...
They were prisons for the prime evils.
Maybe they were some sort of containment system invented by the Angels or something?
If the Diablo angels are made of light and sound...how would they hold things, like Tyreal held the sword...
Perhaps an angel's stone allowed it to interact with the physical world?
And angels can hold things because they're magic.
Tyrael said his energies that tied him to this world were fading, if he had a soulstone and was anchored how could that be so?
Well maybe he was/ will be using the stone to revoke those fading qualities. Maybe as a precaution.
He may be rogue NOW after having to destroy the worldstone, but that's another matter.

What we do know about the stones is this.
