I currently am playing Dibalo 3 with my 54 Barbarian, I'm in hell difficulty. My computer can run D3, but barely. It isn't laggy enough to where is isn't playable but it is cutting it really close! Now that I am in Hell I seem to die a lot more due to lag. Champ. packs having more effects which means more stuff to load on the screen which means I am lagging more then I used to on the lesser difficulties. At least that is why I think it is lagging more. Either way I am lagging more on Hell then Nightmare and Normal. I am looking to upgrade my computer sense the one I have is very old...
RAM: 2GB
Processor: Intel Pentium D CPU 2.66GHz (2 CPUs)
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT (512MB)
I have upgraded the RAM from 1GB - 2GB sense I have gotten it (no huge upgrade I know)
I have upgraded the graphics card from an AMD that came stock with it. It was crap to say the least
I've had to buy a new power supply, my original just gave out
Other then that this computer is untouched.
I am not too knowledgeable when it comes to computers, I understand what is what and what does what. I just do not know what is better and what is worse when it comes to parts. If what I have listed from my computer does not help to answer why I am lagging then please let me know what you need to see. Oh yes! I am also playing on a 1080p 37inch Vizio Television. I am not sure if that has anything to do with anything. I play Diablo in 1920-1080 reso. though. It said on the video settings that its recommended to play with the resolution of your screen.
Thank you all so much for reading my banter, I'm sorry if I haven't given you enough information. If I haven't please let me know and I can get you what you need to help me out.

You don´t need anywhere near that spec to be able to play d3 on highest graphics. Dual core is fine, absolutely no need for i5 or i7. 800W psu is a complete joke with that rig, it´s about double what it actually needs. If you don´t know computers or requirements at all it seems pretty useless to post in this thread...
@OP: Your CPU is probably not an issue. The RAM probably works out if running on win7 and have no other programs running while playing. Your graphics card is most likely the biggest culprit here anyway since it´s really outdated. However seeing as your rig in general is pretty old, I would just buy a completely new rig instead of just trying to upgrade it. Your motherboard has an older socket and it´s hard to find any reasonable upgrades for cpu and ram in the future
half could probably do it but then you will end up
buy new equipment again within a few years again
better to buy something decent now
and I work with the repair of computer. so I know what I'm talking about

You work with computer repairment and you think that a 800W PSU is needed for that rig? You could easily run Radeon HD 7950 crossfire with that PSU... No need to spend twice as much on PSU than is actually needed.
I do however agree that it´s better to buy a "decent" computer, but a HD 7950 is pretty expensive. It´s way better to buy a card half that price and upgrade after 2-3 years, unless you absolutely "have to" play BF 3 on ultra for instance. Though nothing of this is actually needed for OP to do what he wants, i.e. play diablo 3 without lag.

Unless you do hardcore video editing/rending get a I5, get the newer generation I5-3650. If there is a letter after the 3650 it is designed to overclock (IE I5-3750T compared to I5-3650), which once again you wouldn't need to overclock. Approx. 200 USD.
You can find great RAM kits now, some where in the range of 50-100 USD, 8gb kit would be perfect, something at 1600MHtz, anything over that isn't noticeable from a humans perspective (unless once again your doing the video editing.)
I do agree with the GPU, get a kick ass one now and avoid buying another 200$ card later. 7950 would be good. Costs more than the CPU though.
Get a good MoBo, socket LGA1155 (H2) approx 100 USD. Look at the chipsets, RAM limitations, make sure it has 6Gbs/second data transfer sata ports, all good MoBOs now have at least 2 USB 3.0 connections.
PSU 550W should run this fine. There are online programs that will tell you what you should be using. Old technology used more power than new ones as a general rule of thumb.
SSD would be great, but it's not a need. They are still at about 200+ USD for a 128GB. Research which one you buy, don't get any first generation SSDs.
Get a solid liquid cool for your CPU, something like a H60, you can get better, but the price starts to go up dramatically. However air cool is viable, but H2O is great.
You can go much cheaper as always, but you will only be putting yourself in a position to need upgrades again in a few years if you do. Approx. price will be 600-1000 USD. Good luck man.
Edit: Forgot to say: Get Windows 7 64Bit, approx 100 USD. Less you are all about Linux, then beware warden knocking you out, lots of people reporting that it does, I can not verify this however.
Edit 2: Get a tower with good reviews, full size ATX would be great, make sure you get a ATX PSU as well. Mid tower is fine too. price is between 40-200 USD depending on the tower you want.
For a new rig I agree with pretty much everything you´re saying except the GPU. I m o it´s better to go for a cheaper one and switch it out after a couple of years, that way you will have good performance longer for about the same money. But that´s personal preference as well, however I don´t feel like OP really cares if he plays on high or ultra the first 1½ years, which is pretty much how long a GPU stay top-of-the-line.
I feel that liquid CPU cooler is a bit over the top for a completely standard rig. Even the stock cooler doesn´t make alot of noise unless you´re constantly on full load or in a very hot room. I m o unnecessary money that could be spent on something else.
Computers are obviously alot cheaper in the US than here (Sweden) if the price range you´re suggesting is correct. Your rig would cost roughly 1400-1500 dollars here, not taking into account a SSD (which is crazy good btw)

Power Supply -- 550W would be ok if you stick to Antec, Seasonic, Corsair. Would stay away from cheap brands or store brands. If adding more hard drives or want capacity for a 2nd video card, would bump it up to at least 650-800.
SSDs -- if they're not on sale, it's usually $1 per gig now. Corsair M4 or Intel 330, both around the 120-128GB capacities are running about $120-130 on Amazon and Newegg.
Just to add -- if you have a Microcenter nearby, no retailer on earth can match their prices on Intel CPUs + Motherboards. If you buy both together you save another $50.

Today's Intel processors are insanely easy to overclock (think 3.3ghz -> 4.5ghz extremely safely within minutes by changing just 1 setting). However to help dissipate the heat, a Corsair H60 or other closed-loop water coolers does wonders. It literally lowers the temperature by 10 degrees C or more over the stock cooler, not to mention it's more quiet. In addition the fan is much easier to clean when it comes time to blow out the dust.
The H60 is almost as easy to install as any after-market air cooler. I highly recommend it. I build gaming PCs in my spare time for others, but usually my clients prefer the H100.
Edit: The best way for us to help you is to know all of what you have now, and what your budget looks like.
But the other thing is, depending on which CPU he gets, is the OC really needed? i've got the 3.4 GHz i7 and i havn't bothered to OC is, and i doubt that i would notice much improvement if i did. granted i have the H100 cooler (really is quite fantastic if you can afford it/fit it in your case) because i had money to blow, but my first desktop ran with just the stock cooler and i don't think it ever ran into issues either (i believe it was an i5).
I agree with 550 power supply, a newer socket type MOBO, 8 GB of ram, the SSD isn't needed really, they're sweet to have but meh. i was lucky enough to get my HDD when the prices were dirt cheap, after the flooding the prices went up but it's still not hard to find a 1TB for a good deal.
I would say go for the 7950 for a GPU (obviously unless he has major budget constraints) it will last you a good while, and for now you can run games maxed out if you want. Longevity is the way to go imho.
I'm not sure what case you have now, and if you'd be looking to upgrade the case or not, but there are some decent mid/full tower cases for <$100
Thank you everyone who has posted responses to this it's been helpful.
Sorry that I haven't posted back, had to work out of town today.
Anyways! My budget is around 600 - 750 dollars.
Thank you all so much. I've learned that I need a better Graphics card, and my Board is outdated. As far as I know my RAM isn't an issue. I'm only using about 1.2 of it when I play D3. Perhaps having more would make it run smoother I'm not sure....

I would atleast get 4GB, RAM is super cheap (i think 16GB is <$100) but as long as your PSU is atleast 500-550 then your main upgrades would be a CPU/MOBO/GPU, quite easy with a $600 budget.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Pentium D's the really old Intel processors from like 2002-2005 or so? If memory serves, they're single core, but show up as dual since they're hyperthreaded. They ran so hot that Intel tried to push the new BTX case format for additional cooling, and the increasing heat from clocking single core processors higher and higher was the impetus behind the development of dual-core CPUs.
If this is the case, you can't really upgrade. You'd need a new everything except a case, and even then, today's components require more cooling than yesteryear's so even your case might not have sufficient airflow. You would need a new pc, basically, if I'm remembering right about the Pentium D's.
$600-$750 isn't much for a new PC. You say you don't know much about computers so I'd be hesitant to recommend building one, which most people will recommend. If you replace your motherboard you must replace the RAM as well as the CPU, because they won´t be compatible with the new mobo. Anyway, as has already been stated, RAM is dirt cheap, especially if you´re only getting 4 or 8 GB. I don´t know american prices at all, but 600-750 dollars sounds like a pretty slim budget and the only thing you really could save money on would be the GPU. I guess you could be able to get below $750 that way and still have a decent gaming rig.
Alright everyone! I have a computer in my sights that looks promising to me! You all have been a huge help so far, so I figured I would share the specs of this Desktop so you can be the judge!

Will this computer fulfill my needs? I would just love to play Diablo 3 Lag free.
I can't thank you guys enough for helping me with this. Like I said I am not the most knowledgeable person with computers and the parts needed to run specific games. Plus you all have been so nice with your responses! Thank you so much!

I can´t really say whether it´s cheap or not since I don´t know your prices in the US, but at first glance it doesn´t look that cheap tbh. The CPU is so outdated I´m surprised that it´s even possible to still buy it new. Eitherway it´s completely unreasonable for that processor to cost a dime more than $40. I honestly don´t really know AMD platforms since I never buy or build anything but intel, but the motherboard should be pretty outdated as well since the processor is so bad. The RAM is also the cheapest on the market pretty much, I reckon it should cost about $30-$40. 450 watt for the power supply is sufficient for that rig, however unless it´s a brand name like corsair, antec etc. with an 80+ stamp, you´re not gonna be able to add any more harddrives if you´re thinking of doing that. The harddrive you´ve chosen on the other hand seems fine even though I can´t see the brand, 7200 rpm is almost a must for a system drive.
The rig will allow you to play d3 lag free, however imho it is not a good buy. I´m all for budget gaming rigs, but this is way too budget even for my taste. My computer which is over 3 years old and was kind of a budget rig at the time, is still better than this. I only know of good swedish sites for putting together your own computer, so sadly I can´t really help you there, but I´m sure some american here know of any equivilant site in the US. If you feel you can´t or don´t want to build your own computer, I´m sure there´s a site that offers customized builds and assembly. You should be able to get more for your money than this in the US.
Edit:
This is from a random US site I just googled and I put together a way better computer for $800 including shipping. I´m not sure about the GPU, I didnt really take alot of time putting this together, it was just to show that you can get a way better rig for your money.
A decent quad core intel CPU(instead of really crappy dual core AMD), mobo with sata 6 and USB 3 (which yours didn´t have), double the RAM, better GPU, better PSU. In short: better everything. You could also save money using your current computer case, PSU and harddrive if you want.
Alistair, thanks for shining some light on the computer I showed. Good thing I posted it sense you are saying its kinda out dated and over priced! I clicked your link but sadly it wasn't the computer with everything you had set up on it. It was just an empty check out screen. Perhaps you could give me a link to the actual computer and then I could put in the correct parts you did!
NeedBlackupYo, thank you as well for posting another option for me! I will take a look at that. I cannot buy it from that site how ever sense I live in the U.S. not U.K. so the price is all different sense our currency isn't the same
I really appreciate the help guys, thank you so much. Saving me a lot of money!
I´m at work now so I couldn´t really use anything but printscreen->paint, but it´ll have to do
There may be better US sites and there may be parts that are more "bang for the buck", but this is a decent computer. I just realized I forgot dvd player, but I guess that´s only about 20 bucks. As far as I know, ordering from this site means you´d have to build it yourself though, which isn´t really that hard at all, I´m just giving you a heads up. But as I said before, I´m sure there are US sites where you can order it fully assembled and still pick out all the parts if you don´t feel comfortable building it yourself.
Alistair, thank you so much man... I cant believe the kindness and the time you took to help me out! This forum community is so inviting. I'll let you know what I end up getting. Thank you again!
Just throwing this out there...but you can find a lot of SATA III 120GB ssd's right now for right around 100 dollars. I'd do that for your drive and get a bigger one later for storage.
