Short answer. No people don't play Vanilla. You are really missing out. Worse yet, you can't do much to prep for RoS in the meantime besides para leveling and gold acquirement.
I have another question, did they ever make crafting useful? Last time I heard crafted items didn't even come close to items you can farm, and taking time to craft things was a waste of time. Is this still true?
I dunno, the rift dungeons looked pretty cool are they really a random dungeon with random tile set? like can you get desert sand tile, or are they all interior tiles?

Crafting items is useful for start-up gear and plans are pretty damn common... A few pieces can be used in end-game like aughilds set but with the drop rates these days ull likely find your end-game pieces before you obtain the obtain enough mats to get decent rolls of the majority of crafted gear.
I've geared a few alts now, and I can without a doubt say the fastest way to gear a new-ding is to split farm bounties in normal, use your rift keys in RiF t4+ games and spend the shards to gamble for your main set pieces. It's stupidly easy using this method the longest it took me to get a character T4 ready was 2 days, shortest was half a day... Once you can clear T4 rifts in under 10min I would recommend doing that with your rift keys instead of RiF... The reason I say this is because it makes crafting a lot of the start-up legendaries pointless as you don't need gear in order to split farm normal and join RiF.
So in conclusion, if you plan to do it all yourself then yes crafting gear a long the way is gonna help but if your gonna rush for the end-game gear then it wouldn't be worth crafting anything that isn't useful in your end game set... Of which the 3 main ones are Aughilds set, Captains set and Reaper's Wraps.
ROS content is 1/10. Nothing but super annoying monsters and tunnel maps with dead ends. If there was a way to turn off a5 i would do it in a sec, when i see the mobs or maps from there it reminds me of how poorly designed the new content is.
But adventure mode trumps it, makes the game more open. You can tele anywhere, all the bosses are there. Knock out a few bounties or rifts, many more choices. As opposed to picking your act and doing 1 or 2 areas then next. Not only is that tedius but it kills your desire (unless farming keys).
Id personally hold off until you can afford ros, the game isnt very good in story mode after you do it 20x.

I can't afford expansion right now, maybe next month, and was wondering if I would actually be able to find groups if I started playing D3 again.
RoS is outstanding BTW, and about to get better.

expansion is much much better, no reason to play vanilla anymore.
