I would really think it a sad thing if anyone died from pushing themselves to the limit to play a video game. I am a huge gamer but I would never consider doing something like staying up to play 24 hrs straight and waking up to play 20 straight the next day.

Playing a Wizard. Looking for Demon Hunters to play with.
being up 17 hrs is like being drunk. the further u go beyond that, the more dangerous it is. can lead to delusions, psychosis, heart attack, death, etc
I've done 44 hours before and was fine, I'm not refering to gaming but still i was fine. No one is gonna die from this marathon people, and if anyone would like to take up a gold bet for all to see i will.
keep in mind that d3 will draw an older crowd and older people are more at risk. just because you did 44 hrs doesn't mean it's safe to do so. it's going to affect people differently.
it is not possible to die from simply not sleeping, the body will fall asleep after x amount of hours, just make sure that you eat properly while you are staying awake for a long time
Most certainly NOT true at all. Lack of sleep has a severe impact on your immune system.
"One of the possible side effects of a continued lack of sleep is death. Usually this is the result of the fact that the immune system is weakened without sleep. The number of white blood cells within the body decreases, as does the activity of the remaining white blood cells. The body also decreases the amount of growth hormone produced (8). The ability of the body to metabolize sugar declines, turning sugar into fat. One study stated that people who sleep less than four hours per night are three times more likely to die within the next six years (11). Although the longest a human has remained awake was eleven days rats that are continually deprived of sleep die within two to five weeks, generally due to their severely weakened immune system (10), (11), (12)."

This information is wrong, there are currently 1-2 people in the world that do NOT sleep. One is from India im pretty sure, the other is from China. Nat Geo did a program on them awhile back, they use meditation, but the brain does not enter a state of sleep. Wicked stuff. Pretty sure the one guy hasnt slept in like 11 years. This was like 5-6 years back.
Edit* actually there is one guy who hasnt slept for 38 years, a Thai farmer
edit* on an unrelated note, there is someone who hasnt eaten in 68 years, meditation is ballin'!

Question is how many lives will be saved from people who stayed in playing Diablo 3 instead of going out and getting mugged/killed, hit by a car, or slipping and cracking their skulls. ^.^

If you honestly believe sleep deprivation has no negative side effects you're an idiot. None of that information is wrong.

(Bolded text is why you really don't want to be cramming sugar in the case you do decide to marathon.)
Kabooom. I studied cognitive psych, and social psych, I'm aware of the side effects of sleep deprivation. I'm just saying your link has incorrect information.

Some guy gets a "voice from god" in India, believes it 110%, then stops eating for 68 years, and lives. Ask any doctor if its possible. They will say "No". Scientific fact applied to everyone else but 1 dude (that we know of).
Religious fanaticism, accomplish insane feats since we conceptualized god.

As a fellow psychologist, I'd like to see the scientific research constituting that there are people that have absolutely no need of sleep. I consider random TV documentaries about as reliable as wikipedia.

The average person suffers many detrimental effects from sleep deprivation. Endorsing this to play a fucking video game is absurd.
