So since this game is still not out, and i've done nothing for the past 3 months but listen to D3 podcasts and watch gameplay vids, i figured i would play a little D2. COuldn't find my copy so i got the digital download off the blizz store.
After i installed it, it just wouldn't load. Wouldn't even run the video test after the installation. Some issue with Direct Draw and 3D or something, idk. went on the forums and couldn't find anything other than people saying that changing the compatibility to XP service pack 2 might help. but that's not working.
Kinda dissapointed... was only 9.99 to d/l, so w/e..... but still.
That's strange; I decided to do the same recently and installed my old D2 and LoD expansion on Windows 7 64-bit, but I didn't have any issues with it. I wonder if something else is maybe conflicting? What is the error message you get?
When i installed it on my new computer i had some problems with the colour. In any case go on YouTube and search for Diablo 2 on Windows 7 or something like that. There should be a few videos showing you how to fix the problem. My colours are still a bit messed up at the starting menus but when i actually go in to the game its all ok! Hope the videos help you!
I went and got a new copy after my original got lost. I installed it and it would launch but the game was negative looking and black, could not see any thing...unplayable. Something about a problem with windows I think, tried everything but no joy. So in the end I input the key code into my Blizzard acc and down loaded the digital version and it worked. It wants to run in Windows basic but still plays. I since tried D1 but that won't play either, it installed ok but that's all, I have not tried to get that to play yet.

I guess I should clarify my post as well; Even though I have the disks, I actually installed using the digital downloads from Battle.Net. I don't know if that would make a difference, but I don't think I have seen any of the weird color issues or trouble launching the game. It doesn't take too kindly to alt-tabbing, and of course having it go full screen with that lovely 800x600 image in 1080p Windows makes the game look pretty horrible, but it is still definitely playable.
It's kind of hard to tell what may be the problem without your system specs but I had a similar issue. I thought it was my windows 7 64bit also. So after playing around with a few windows setting... it was still causing the problem of not loading properly.
Then I went into my graphics card settings and disabled one of my GPU's because I have a GTX295 where techinally its like "SLI" but in 1 card, so I figured D2 was an old game and wouldn't be compatible with 2 of them... and yeah once disabling one of my GPU's the game worked like a charm!
Have you tried launching it in admin mode? (right-click -> Run as administrator) If it doesn't work, try to launch it as admin AND in compatibility mode.
Never had a problem besides the admin thing on my computer (Win 7 Pro 64-bit)

Shot in the dark, but I had to change some settings for my shortcut for it to run properly:
After right-clicking your shortcut and going to properties, on the Compatibility tab, run it in XP SP3 compatibility mode.
Also checked "Disable desktop composition"
Another thing you can look into is installing a glide wrapper, though I don't remember if I did that on this install.
Download the files from Blizzard's website/store and run the install/download packs in compatibility mode. Just doing it to the game when loading it won't work.
Or you could use Glide and see if that works. It's usually used for the color problems, but it may help.
Thanks for the tips.. turns out, after i changed the compatibility mode to xp sp 2, it still wouldn't work. But after i added the" -window" after the target line, it worked fine lol.
