There would be so much segregation in the community, I don't think it would be possible.
uhhh I have to disagree with you 100%. I know of several games that allow the console community play with the online, and its fantastic.
But they probably aren't established franchises like Diablo where the entire community is already committed to playing on the PC. Thus the vast majority of console players will be new to game and there will be the PC "hardcore" and console "noob" crowd. Flame wars, trolling galore. I can say with 98% certainty that this will happen.
Ok first off there are a lot of flaws in your logic. I agree with you 100% if when you played if you knew who was a console player, and how was a pc, and if all pc users were pro...ect that would happen... but.... lets think for a second.
FIrst, there would be no indication of who is playing on the console and whos playing on the computer... so ingame (which is where it matters) you would have no idea...so how could you get upset at them when you dont even know?
Second... your logic and pros and noobs makes 100% no since at all. Diablo is well over 10 years old. Most of the "new" gaming population (kids) have never touched diablo games...we are going to get massive amounts of new people to the series. there are people who play all the other Blizzard games, and had no idea what diablo was when the forums were made. So the logic of "PC hardcore crowd" makes no since...as it will be filled with "noobs"
Lets also not forget a lot of gamers dont even have pcs. A good deal of people who use to pay diablo 2...the "hardcores" might not even have computers that can handle the game anymore, they may be jumping on and playing it on their consoles instead.
So without a clear indication of what they are playing on(pc or consle) ingame (which they wouldnt show in any form) if someone is a noob or hardcore...even that wouldnt tell you what they are playing from... so its just not a logical thing to say.
To Molsterr: you are forgetting something, with the PC verson, when you install, all you are installing is the Launcher, and the maps(which that alone supposedly takes up somwhere between 2-3 gigs), everything else is handled by Blizzard's servers, so this game Isn't only a few gigs, and it would be very tough to squeeze everything even on a Blu-ray(and wouldn't be plauseable to have it for DL either, lol it would take a week to DL such a game with a console).
Ok you dont know much about servers, and thats ok. The game will be more than a few gigs. (the beta which is 1/3 of act 1 takes up 2-3 gigs) Client->server games, are the same size as any other game. You still have to have every graphic, every sound, movie, map..ect on your client.
Servers, which are the "thought" and control of everything that happens, are VERY small. they are nothing but a console program, with no graphics, sounds, or anything that takes up space. So this augment about size is 100% invalid. [and the point of the blueray was just to show overkill, you do know this game will be sold on dvds right? its no bigger than any other game that has ever come out.]
next what are you talking about a week to DL DLC... im not sure how many console games you have played... but they download the same speed as your home computer.
I dont think thats what he meant at all, as ports are a full different matter. Some people are seriously silly and dont want console players to play with them. {and bad made ports will never be something blizzard does (console -> pc that is}

I think you're wrong in a assuming that the vast majority of the online community is new to Diablo. True there will certainly be people new to the series, and many of them will be young who weren't old enough for the first 2. But I think a large majority of the people following this game are fans of the old games.
Also, practically any PC bought within the last 4 years should be capable of playing this game. Any "hardcore" D2 gamer is more than likely a PC gamer (not to say they don't play consoles) and has probably kept up with the times.
Have you ever played a game with a hard core following? Log on to counter strike, join a clan server, say your completely new to the game, see how fast you get kicked. It happens, it's happened to me. And thats not even cross-platform, it's just because I was new. I can see it now:
Player 1 joins game
Player 2 joins game
Player 1:r u playing on PS3 or PC Player 2:PS3 dude, just got it this game is so awesome! Player 1 leaves game.
Include the fact that if they were to release Diablo 3 for consoles it would take at least another 1.5-2 years to develop, test, de-bug, and release. The PC D3 community will already be quite developed, furthering the separation.
I think my logic is quite sound, but if you choose to believe yours, that's fine too.
From what I know Blizz will only release D3 on the PS3 because Sony are a lot more open to interacting with PCs and other game studios for bigger projects. Microsoft has too many requirements and gets a lot of the money that should go to the studios, plus the obvious that they don't use a cloud so that's also a huge loss. In any way the game won't be released until at least 2 years in the future since Blizz are still recruiting a team and not actually developing nothing more than instruments for it right now. And pretty much just checking the possibility of D3 on consoles.
I don't see why anyone would not want more players in D3. After all the point of it is that both console and PC players will be sharing the same servers and will be able to play together. Bnet won't be hard to implement, it would take about 2-3 to a maximum of 6 months to implement, which is very little compared to he possibilities afterwards.
So more players is bad somehow? Like, if in some countries (like mine) it's kinda hard to get enough money for a proper PC, but you can buy a console for less than half the price, and on top of that you're an excellent gamer that just loves multiplayer experience and being a part of a community... If that player joins in it's somehow bad for the D3 player base?
Or the fact that some player just straight out prefer wireless controllers and chllin on the couch 2 meters away from the TV?
Really, all it does is give more people more choice on how they can play and on top of that is very revolutionary for the game industry in general. We should be grateful for the opportunity even if 99% of us here are PC gamers.
If the console client doesn't require internet for the campaign its size would be doubled and that's a big problem on consoles which have limited space already. Also all the game files would be there for crackers to go through. Which points to - no, there won't be offline play in consoles.
@my Bulgarian neighbor - That's up to Blizz to figure out man. The controls need to be translated perfectly and the interface will surely get a big overhaul. That's why they've had a guy simply figuring out if the game can be released on a console for like half an year now. Research is where it's all at.
1) Targeting & Selecting. How are u supposed to quickly target the right mobs if there are dozens of them on a screen? Navigating through 350 slots of inventory/menus/etc? Diablo 3 at higher levels is all about fast decision and targeting the right mobs. Hardcore on a joystick? Bool story, cro.
2) Chatting. Yes, u can use voice or connect a keyboard, but it will be a handicapped computer then, lol.
3) Controls. This is not an arcade slasher where you press arrows X and O, and you beat the game. Hot swapping skills, careful/surgical actions, ideal synergy with teammates, etc.
4) and so on.
If someone is looking for a wheelchair gimped handicapped impotent one-eyed no balls game - console version is your choice!

There's not really selecting in PC as well. What there is is highlighting and it helps figure out which mob the cursor is above. You don't really need that on consoles since you can move your character with the left thumb just slashing around with the action buttons. Instead of 5 though you'll likely get 4 skill slots with 2 additional from the R and L upper shoulder buttons. The lower ones can be for instant access to Inventory and Char screen while the Select button will bring up the Skill page. Hitting start can give you more options for menus like the Lore page for example. There's plenty of possibilities. It'll be a tad slower rearranging the skills but experienced console players will take pretty much the same time to swap them as normal PC players.
2) Chatting. Yes, u can use voice or connect a keyboard, but it will be a handicapped computer then, lol.
How is voice chat making it a handicapped computer? Almost any console game out there supports voice chat and people use it regularly. It's us PC gamers that aren't used to that feature yet. On the other hand, again, experienced console gamers can chat pretty fast even with a controller. And of course, there's the optional keyboard you can buy if you really want to be on par with PC players.
3) Controls. This is not an arcade slasher where you press arrows X and O, and you beat the game. Hot swapping skills, careful/surgical actions, ideal synergy with teammates, etc.
Have you played Torchlight on Xbox? KotOR? Mass Effect? Dragon Age? Sure the last 3 had a pause feature to give players time to set up a better strategy, but that's only because they were much deeper RPG experiences in general and the use of the proper situational skills and abilities was much critical. D3 is a hack and slash and will play wonderfully mashing buttons and jumping straight into a crowd of mobs.

Would the console game require the same "always connected to the internet" model? If not, would a single player then be offered?
Something interesting to think about.

What I do care about is Blizzard's longevity. So if they can make money from console titles, then sure why not!
