I've been thinking about the potential of quests and the random nature that's being brought back from Diablo 1. Something that could make playability so much more rewarding is if they add special quests that are only available in Nightmare and Hell (and Inferno?). These quests can obviously escalate in challenge, but it would be a very fitting way to make the difficulties more unique and distinct.
I remember going through the difficulties in Diablo 2 and it became quite a schlep when seeing everything over and over again, some content I even skipped, mostly because it didn't offer great rewards, but also because I've seen it far too many times.
If they have quests for difficulties it would make it more rewarding to play everything through with each playthrough, making each difficulty feel special each on their own.
Also, are there still class specific quests? Haven't heard about that in a while so I'm starting to wonder if it's still in the game or not.
If I recall correctly, they scrapped the idea of class specific quests. They wouldn't work in a co-op environment, and there's little justification to make quests that only 1/5 characters will enjoy.
Dialog will be unique to each character. Different NPCs will react differently with different player characters. There was one BlizzCon video that demonstrated this with a New Tristram town guard, that reacted negatively to the Witch Doctor but less so to the Wizard.
Such a shame. I sort of liked the idea, but the content being separated between 1/5 of the player base makes sense for them to decide against it.
I hope every NPC react differently towards you though, which would make you feel a lot more unique. Diablo 2 made started with idea, but I would love it if every NPC could react to your class.
Even so, I still think difficulty quests would fit nicely. It doesn't even have to be a lot. Even just 1 or 2 per act, thrown in among the other random quests. It would spice it up a bit, I think.
That is too bad if they really did scratch them, they really could have tuned the quests to fit everyone but perhaps be more class specific in a manner. For example, class quest for a monk, you are given quest, you go through, get reward. A different class who gets that "monk class quest" instead helps a NPC monk to get his "class quest" and in turn rewards you. Could have been a neat way to add a different playing experience and introduce some class specific items while still allowing other classes to take part in a different yet meaningful way.
