Remember that fat greedy bum from act 1? The guy who sat with his wagon in the Rogue Encampment? The guy who dislike everything but money and trys to act nicely so maybe you'll buy something from him?
(I once saw a close-up picture of him... couldn't find it, but I think he got white mustache)
Sometimes when you gossip with Gheed, he says: "When – or if – I get to Lut Gholein, I’m going to find the largest bowl of Narlant weed and smoke ‘til all earthly sense has left my body."
Okay, so the guy wanna go to the desert city, Lut Gholein and smoke some weed. That's about it for Gheed.
Now, in the Diablo 3 Concept Art Trailer, we saw this image:
Is it Gheed? He's fat, got that mustache, and he's wearing fancy desert style clothes. Original Gheed was wearing a hat so I dunno about his hair, but it's been 2 decades and maybe he went to Lut Gholein in the meanwhile, got fatter a richer
The upper part of the picture says "Victor Lee" which doesn't really support my claim... and if the date is right, it's probably one of the first concept art images for Diablo 3
But look at the name given. Its 'De Soto', not Gheed. And Gheed isn't really fat. This guy is a completely new tradesman (or some kind of royalty perhaps).
Gheed did say he would go to Lut Gohlein, he also said he would smoke a whole lot of narlet weed until all earthly sensation left his body.
Oh and that he was going to party like it's 999.
This guy loves money, and clearly narlet weed. The only drug other than ethanol (Acohol) present in Sactuary so far that I can recall.
So yeah that could be Gheed. He clearly used the money he got from you to buy some new threads.
EDIT...

Gheed's Mentor? someone must have taught him the art of pilfering a hapless traveller looking to make a name for himself for all he is worth.
They is clearly a similarity there.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Oh yeah... that would be "De Soto" and not "Victor Lee" I guess... got alittle confused there :/
But yeah... hehe, perhaps he's related to him. There will be characters coming back in Diablo 3 and I would still bet on Gheed because he was pretty popular along with Deckard and a few others. I guess the picture alone doesn't say much... but there's a chance.
EDIT... Oh and how can you say he isn't fat, Atru? He always looked pretty fat to me... especially when compared to other NPCs.
Not necessarily a relative, men like Gheed usually are part of some group of likeminded people.
A guild of thieves of sorts. Somehow Gheed managed to worm his way into a women only encampment. Warriv owns a carvan which brings supplies. But how did a pompous, money hungry only out for himself type person get in there. He is almost as much a rip off as Wirt was, charging his 50 gp fee to look over his crap.

ehh.... 20 years after Diablo II??? I thought Gheed looked to like he's nearing his mid-late 40's in Diablo II so this being his mentor is unlikely imo.

Well, I dunno. Gheed may be a little chubby, but he looks like nothing compared to De Soto. De Soto is HUGE, lol. A big round ball.
well this is 20 years later... and pampered rich trades men do get HUGE in their last years.
and who said De Soto can't be his last name or something?

So Gheed couldn't have been taught to rip people off at a young age? Let's assume for a moment that Gheed was taught the art of ripping people off when he was 20 by a person twice his age (40) 20 years later he is well versed in the art and practices his craft on you. Gheed is now 40 his mentor 60. by the time of D3 Gheed would be 60 his mentor 80. That is less than the most people's projected age for Cain, he generally garners an age assumption of 90 in d3.
And what if Gheed was mentored by someone 10 or even 5 years older than he. Mentor simply means teacher. There is no law a teacher has to be a man or specifically an old man.
one of Oliver Twist's mentors is the Artful Dodger, he is about the same age as Oliver.
and who said De Soto can't be his last name or something?
Cain is Deckard Cain's last name. De is not often used as a first name. Dee is though. De Soto makes sense as a last name.
De Arnise is the family name in Baldur's Gate II.

I was gonna delete Chelletje's post, because obviously he's lying... but nah, I'll leave it, and people will remember him as a liar.
I really hate liars. Its just one of those things that really annoys me (I don't get annoyed easily though). You know what, I'm gonna put that in my sig.
Anya... yeah I'd say it's possible. Charsi? I never liked her... she was just too nice all the time
Tyrael - I'm almost sure he will be there. It has been offically discussed that Tyrael mysteriously disappeared after the destruction of the worldstone... although it would make sense that he's back to heavens now that the world is saved, I'd say there's still some unfinished business with this fellow. He's also very popular among the fans.
Anyway. I wanted to say why 'De Soto' seem so fat to everybody. In the concept art trailer video, the lower part of the image (the one of his belly) appears and then slowly scrolling up to his upper body and head... while scrolling up, the camera also zoom out. When I edited the pictures and placed one on top of the other it seems like he's HUGE... while he's actually as fat as Gheed is.
And hah, great way to trick us, Romak. I guess he could have gained weight over time anyway. That would be cool if it was Gheed de Soto. It'd be nice to see him again, but at the same time it'd be exciting to meet a new character. We'll just wait and see, I suppose.
Ah, thank you very much Biff Exploder. I knew I should have checked the site again. I just hate going there because it always crashes my browser.
Apologies to Chelletje. But that is exactly why I hate liars. They make me lose my trust in people, so I end up not trusting the people who are actually telling the truth. Its like the boy who cried wolf. Its hard to know who to trust. Still, an explanation where the information was from in the first place would have been nice.
Well... I guess we can close the case on this one ^^ It isn't Gheed. The next thing I'm gonna do is read bestiary... I thought it just gives you flat information about monsters. Aww... I still really wanna see Gheed in D3!
I did say sorry, Chelletje. Look at my previous post. Sorry, you must have been really angry and didn't bother reading any more.
This situation just really makes me hate liars/tricksters even more. See what they made me do? Lying or tricking isn't funny, it just damages my trust in people.

De Arnise is the family name in Baldur's Gate II.
De translates as of, hence a lot of names being De xxxx. They come from xxxx, in this case Soto, presumeably a village.
I know what it means, but it's still the last name. Nalia De Arnise. or that chick who lives down the road from my old house, Sarah De Haan. Last name, title, point is, seldom when you see something like De Soto is De his first name and Soto his last. That was my point. his last name or title or what you might refer to as a last name, is De Soto.

'Tricking' is the same as 'lying', you know.

Sorry again
What if it was Gheed, and they were trying to cover it up. They also could be pulling us in a different direction. Who knows?
Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings.
