In almost every game the throwing motion is the same no matter how far you throw, it would be subtle but cool if the character would arc themselves or have an entirely new animation for different distances.
I REALLY like this idea. That would be such a cool aspect. Like if your a little girl that is scared of diablo and want to piss him off with a noxious gas potion from really far away it shows your character throwing his/her whole body into the action, but when up close it could be like an underhand toss "Diablo.... Here, For you! Noxious gas you giant red ass!"

yeah, I like the idea of letting the potion just kinda roll out of your hand if you're close enough. It should slow down the firebomb's actual detonation though
