Your Ice Armor now provides 50-60% Melee Damage Reduction and automatically casts Frost Nova whenever you take 10% of your Life in damage
At first it looks somewhat lackluster, but after some thinking, it might be possible to make a really good frost support wizard, atm on live i have a frost support build that increases the groups dmg by 50% (83% when they are frost nova'd) if the ring casts the runed version of FN + the new gems it's def possible to tank freeze higher GRs, tested it on live gr 40 with moratorium only and it has promise.
Honestly like most Wizards i just want delsere's, but seeing as season 2 is gonna be boring bird again i rather try something new, any other ideas on the ring or does it really suck?
I think it might be good. Maybe this will subsitute the String of Ears belt so you can use witching.
Or maybe you can use both item, and get around 90% meleedmg reducetion-
Im not sure about the FN dmg buff, i think it will cast a non rune frost nova.
Also if it makes you use Ice armor, the rune Crystalize gives you additional 20% armor, 60 if you stack.
If yu consider the HP regen gem, makes iz a bit tanky, that sould not happen i guess. In every game wiz is the dmg dealer, no the tank. But maybe i think it wrong. This ring is promising, but i will rely on the Pro-s wheter they use or not.
Nope. I'm sure that this ring will have it's uses, but I don't see this as a top-tier item. RoRG, SOJ, and Unity still have those slots. They would have to come up with some crazy stuff to drop those rings as the three to choose. Something like, "when equipping all pieces of a set, then the set bonuses are increased by 15%. The Ring of Royal Grandeur cannot be used to complete the set bonuses." or "Escape skills have a 50% cooldown reduction and resource cost."
Glad to see so much feedback, given the proper support skills it has potencial, maybe woh builds can make a comeback somehow, although i still think it shines best as support. (again if the FN casted is the runed version, can you confirm that Usling?)

I think a cool option for a similar ring would be one that works off of Energy Armor.
Your Energy Armor now provides 50-60% Armor and automatically casts Wave of Force-Impactful Force whenever you take 10% of your Life in damage.
Imagine this with the Energy Armor-Force Armor rune.
Another option:
Your lightning spells have a XX-XX% chance to automatically cast Meteor-Thundercrash at the target's location when Storm Armor is active. The damage from Storm Armor can proc this effect.
Honestly like most Wizards i just want delsere's, but seeing as season 2 is gonna be boring bird again i rather try something new, any other ideas on the ring or does it really suck?
Won't Delsere be introduced in season 2 as a non-seasonal set? They said they won't introduce the new sets revealed at blizzcon for 2.1.2, but it would be strange if it wasn't introduced at season 2.
I really hope you're right, but it sems to me like with season 1 30 days end not yet announced and PTR taking this long that by the time we are done with 2.2 PTR season 2 will be almost over.

I got the ring equipped on my season wiz, it had a socket, so I put a bane of the trapped in it. My build is fire (got a CIndercoat) except Ice Armor.
It works okay with a low level paragon. What i usually do is run close enough to chill enemies (and it really minimizes the melee while do so) and then hit them with black hole, blizzard and disintegrate.
[p]Im actually trying a build for support with the ring:[/p]
[p]http://eu.battle.net/d3/fr/calculator/wizard#aifQNg!hbWg!ZYZccb[/p]
[p]Key items are:[/p]
aether walker and cosmic strand to stun mobs with calamity[/p]
dovu amu to complete tp effect [/p]
the magistrate to proc nova with frost hydra[/p]
halo of arlyse and Rorg[/p]
strongarm bracers (for blackhole spellsteal)[/p]
With max cdr for slow time time warp (until next set) i think the build can be viable for support in gr[/p]
WD is not mainly there for damage, but for control.
Crusader got: 20 CC, 100 CD, 15% IAS, 20%dmg through shield glare, 10% through toxin gem, 30% through strongarm bracers.
= way more than the wiz can offer.
About pulling: CD is almost the same yes, but Vacuum got a WAY bigger range. Also more important the crus got steed charge - draw and quarter to pull mobs in from further away. Really important for range mobs.
About the stun: stun is just not enough. Even stunned and frozen elites still trigger jailer/thunderstorm/mortar/frozen etc. The WD's fear is the only ability in the game that can prevent those affixes from triggering.
Another problem: Black hole cast breaks the WD's fear effect, making the wizard a danger to the DH's lives.
It may work with a WOW build, you hvae to stay close enough to take a lot of melee dmg with it. Thats the reason I wanted one. I'll see in about 5 months if it helps much. Unless I luck out and get a WOW with my Season wiz.
53% direct damage buff in class A yes. You're just leaving out everything else there right now.
In this class A there's also the WD's toxin gem, haunt and strongarm bracers. Also the DH's Steady Aim, Cull the Weak, Bane of the Powerful, CA Bonus and Sentry Bonus. Maybe I forget something here but you get the point.
Overall stacking more class A buffs becomes pretty terrible at some point, so yes 14%CC and 100% CD actually beat that extra 53% by far in reality.
Edit: It's 15% IAS on top by the Law.
And about Wizz vs WD? It's always WD. Because of the superior crowd control. Nothing comes close to horrify, when it comes to perma-cc.
Also two more points:
1: WD got the ZDog option, at least in non-season (I know this is a pure seasonal discussion at the moment, but in a few months it will be wizz vs. ZDog). You can't face up against infinite ressource generation and permanent RG stun.
2: Wizard just dies. To procc the HoA you have to get hit. And you don't survive being hit on level 55+. Easy as that. 60% Meleereduction and 60% Armor yay or nay, you just die.
Also you can't weave in blackthornes in the gear setup you posted. One molten pack and you bite the dust. Same goes for electrified exept you take the Xephirian amulet, which let's you lose some damage again.
Before we continue - note that I play Hardcore, I wasn't sure if I should discuss the ring in this topic, or open a thread in Hardcore discussion, so I decided to come here first.
I found this little beauty a couple of days ago : http://postimg.org/image/lo3v4s96f/ and, since I don't have a SoJ yet, I gave it a try and I happened to like it a lot although I still have a long way to go before I get all the gear I want. I managed to do a GR 33 (Halo and Unity) with no problems, but I am curious what do you think about it and could it serve as a SoJ replacement. I do know that SoJ is awesome and BiS and no other ring could replace it and it should be the only ring next to the Unity and so on, but on the other hand, considering that Wizards are quite squishy in higher grifts (i.e 40+) it gives more possibilities, considering that it freezes the mobs around you etc.
http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/nikolay-2849/hero/54778799 Here's my profile as well. Not that it is that important, but it might give you an overall picture of how am I doing so far. I have Strongarm, but I'm using Nemesis for T6 rifts, as I don't like switching gear mid-fight.
Thanks in advance and sorry if this is not the right place to post.
Imo it may find it's place in HC Wiz setups but doesnt really have a purpose on softcore, since the damage you lose through the SoJ is just too good.
To give the ring some offensive potential you would have to take FN-Bone Chill, which makes you lose Magic Weapon. -20% +33% (non permanent), plus you have to stand in meleerange which makes you lose the Zei's bonus. Another huge downside.
Another problem: With HoA Ice Armor - Crystallize gives you 60% Meleereduction and 60% armor. Still no defense against any ranged attacks though, and ranged attacks are the wizards biggest problem anyhow (archers/speermen etc.). Since this damage is physical the esoteric alteration gem won't help here either.
TL;DR: Gain of toughness and utility vs. huge loss of damage. Nice for chilly farming of low GRifts, not suitable for highend progress in my opinion.

2) Its like unity but just for melee damage
So less defence for some frost novas that ANYWAYS wont protect from ranged attacks and this ring offers mostly melee damage reduction. Fuck logic?
HEY! Look at all teh TL:DR...I jsut got this ancient...does NOTHING unless you are wiz with Ice Armor, correct?

Its fun, but not the greatest item.

The question is why would I take off my Unity for this. Frost Armor blows. Absolutely no fucking reason at all.
Got one on season 2, 6%Crit + socket. Rolled 43% Cdmg so far.
I don't use the ice armour skill yet...not sure what skill to take out without losing utility and dmg.
I do have a nice ancient Rimeheart and a mediocre ancient Azurewrath. Hoping for some Frostburns and then I'll try out a cold support wiz.

Still not viable, because you can't perma CC Elites like the WD can, and you can't pull mobs in as efficiently as the crusader can.
Also the buffs are weaker than the crusader's.
Still no reason to take wizards in GR's. Sad but true.
WD is not mainly there for damage, but for control.
