okay so my idea is to have the same gear as the current tank build, basically stack cdr till you have infinite serenity as i have now ( http://us.battle.net/d3/en/profile/queeftastic-1965/hero/45460915 ) but instead of tank stats as you would normally build, have dps stats, so you could cyclone strike everything in tank it and dps all at the same time. I have given it some thought and id have to get rid of the borns shoulders and equip a 2h therefore eliminating 20% cdr. i tested it by taking off one of my weapons with 10% and taking off the 10% cdr from paragon points, and at full stacks of swiftness gem serenity has about a .4 second downtime maybe a little more/less. i figure that is good enough to tank most of the damage and i could have some sustainability during that short window to still do damage with the sunwuko set and be more viable than just a support monk. obviously i would have to get the gear to do the build but was curious about the build and wanted to get some feedback, or see if someone else has thought of it or has tried it.
I tested it out with decent gear and the dps output was not enough. If you get very good rolls on all your gear you might have a chance to get to like 50-70m edps
You just give up the Xeph, use swk amulet, gloves and shoulders. Then go for Born's sword (+chest obv) and the second sword should be either Skycutter or probably even better Akanesh.
Short answer: In my opinion it might work with really good gear but i'm not sure if the dps output will be worth it in a 4p group.
hmm... any way you can think of that would make up for the window, trying to think of a reliable cc that could make the window not a problem. even then the riftboss cant be cc'd reliably
The blind is good CC for not taking the melee dmg, but you can't CC the affixes like desecrator/molten/lighting (and this will destroy you in split of a second, if you dont believe me watch some HC movies of monks dying to lighting affix in less than a second when in party) and so on and so on.
This may work for high tier grifts (35-42) but not for competitive high (like 45+).
that's not exactly true because on high GR you don't solely rely on the monk (at least in the more popular 4p composition atm). In an ideal situation, the wd will lockdown everything which basically means that there no champ affixes being spawned.
I believe that on high GR (45+) every bit of dps matters and it's evident that 2dh + wd + monk can run into serious dps problems. that's why wd's are going for hybrid buidls where they add as much damage as they can and i believe that monks will start doing the same eventually, if they haven't already.
It's jsut that it's extremely hard to gear for and giving up the Xeph just adds another layer of rng that can fuck your rift up. I don't think this has been tested thoroughly and that we might see some people pulling it off.
the window between sereneties happens even if you are not running the hybrid build so it's irrelevant. It's something you need to get used to, like don't stand directly on arcane beams and shit like that... The toughness that you lose from those few pieces that you are changing for more dps will not make that much of a difference in your toughness that will decide if you die from fire chains or not imo.
You can get to very close perma serenity but you need a good ping for that and obviously gogok on 15.
@jamoose thats what im trying to do and i do agree with the serenity not being literally 100% due to latency and so on. i thnk ill try it, 50-70M dps can finish a rift boss a few seconds faster and could be the time you need to finish a new record

With my "decent" gear i reached ~25m edps... If you get really good rolls on everything AND use gifts on a very good rolled born's sword AND get an Akanesh with 30% holy dmg etc... You might even get to 100m but as i said, very hard to gear for.

Good luck.
