Please read below before checking my profile and being horrified, I'm fully aware this gear setup makes no sense, but you can kind of get the idea what I'm trying to do:
So, I was extremely excited when I finally acquired 4/6 raiment of a thousand storms set. I was previously using a speed rush farming monk and generally farming normal bounties, T1 or T2 rifts at most until I get better gear. The lightning monk was my ticket for T3+, maybe even T6, and this set was gonna be my ticket (esp with the buff blizz promised in 2.1). I was trying to stack lightning resist on all gear, and if not that then at least all res depending on how things rolled.
I got excited and decided to test this build out in T3, using crappy gems (because I'm poor...) and knowing full well that I am missing key pieces of the gear (appropriate ammy bracers and gloves, for starters. I also have a SoJ that rolled cold, so I'm waiting on that to find resources to roll lightning). I had over 1200 all res, just under 500k dps. I figured I'm not going to be efficient by any means but I'll have a taste. And it tasted horrible... here's my list of problems:
1. Survivability. I thought with all the stuns and All Res and epiphiny/desert shroud, this was going to be my strength. Not the case, I take an incredibly amount of damage, 1200 all res be damned (granted I'm only using 5 marquis diamonds, I guess if I used 5 max quality diamonds my all res would be around 1400-1500). My vitality isn't exactly low either so I don't know how I'm going to fix this.
2. What to reroll. My boots has EP which I have no plans of using, but it also rolled cold res which I am not stacking. I don't know if I should roll inc EP damage to inc vitality or inc some other skill, or roll cold to lightning res. Same for my shoulders. Of course Ideally I'd get another set shoulders and boots with better rolls but I doubt that happens anytime soon...
3. DPS, the problem here is very low cc, which again I don't have an answer for. I'm sitting at 25% (if I max out cc in paragon it'll be 28), I can get 5-6% more on my helm and 5-6% on my RROG, that still puts me at 38%. How do I get to 50%? And outside of the cc problem, how else would I improve my DPS?
4. Rounding out my gear. My plan was chest pants boots shoulders gloves are set items, belt thundergod's vigor, helm eye of the storm (GNK people argue is better but I don't have one), bracers strongarm. R1 RROG R2 SoJ ammy = something that has dex cc cd and lightning %. Weapon 1 and 2 = Odyn's son and Thunderfury. Is this a solid plan or am I better off doing something else?
Thank you for reading through my long thread and I would REALLY appreciate any input. I worked pretty hard to get this set and it would suck if none of this gear is useful...
Thousand Storms is hella pointless unless you get really good rolls of it for the right slots. It's only 15% lightning damage for FOUR pieces. It's not a big deal when most single pieces with elemental damage can give 20% or more. Having 4 items with strong and useful affixes will be better than having 4piece Storms with bad rolls. My lightning character runs T5 with comfort and I use none of Storms (but I'm unlucky as hell with that set in particular). T6 is a stretch, but that's more so because our DPS specs are severely lacking. I doubt me getting the absolute BiS set (which is really just about losing Cain's 8% damage for 15% Lightning and 500 Dex) is going to change this at all.
Anyway.
Get an Aughild's (shoulder + chest) and a Cain's (boots + gloves) sets instead. Or you can do what a poster above said and get Aughild's + Storms, just drop one of the Storms pieces (chest or shoulder) and get an Aughild's bracer. That's not the best way to do it though because if you get a decent Strongarm Bracers, you absolutely want to use them - hands down one of the best items in the game if you're running in groups, and very good solo as well. But you can always re-craft and re-adjust your gear once you get them, so why not? This is why crafts are cool. (Edit: I don't think Reaper's are that good, by the way. I have a very good lightning version of them and Strongarms is just way ahead, I do however always run in groups - publics if nobody is online, rather that than alone.)
Reroll your helm to a socket and use % Life. You're at 287k, that's like half of what most people have - this is most likely your biggest survival problem. You should reroll that thing anyway because if you want damage, you go for +% Crit reroll.
Why did you reroll +armor on your belt? TGV drops with All Resist, why did you even touch it at all? You can go for AR or +Life on it, both will help you more than armor.
Your boots reroll question: if I remember right, boots can have LTK damage. I don't know, in your situation it's probably more useful to reroll the secondary, but LTK damage is cool too. To be honest I'd just craft Cain's boots and gloves, solve your gloves problem and improve all the affixes overall at the same time. Same goes for Shoulders, just with Aughild's set instead; but if you want to keep using Storms, I'd reroll SSS damage into vitality - as I said earlier, you lack a lot of hp.
RoRG reroll is awful as well, but I guess you're aware anyway.
Finally, and ironically the first thing you should try doing (cuz its free), is just using Mantra of Healing/Time of Need (or the life per hit rune even, if you feel like you lack sustain over reduction). You can then actually use Unity passive. You don't really end up losing that much anyway - how often do you really use your mantra when you have a spirit spender soaking up most of your spirit anyway? Furthermore you can even use Chant of Resonance (over Transcendence) to be able to use the MoH activation shield whenever it's necessary. I used to run that build myself a lot when I just started out playing in RoS and ran T4 with friends absolutely undergeared. The shield saved me a countless amount of times.
Edit: and regarding your poorness problem - stop running bounties as a primary activity. Do T1/T2 rifts. Do any rifts that you can comfortably do. You'll at least stack mats like that, for all the crafting and rerolling. Gold too.
Hope this helps. Didn't realize I wrote so much until I posted it, lol
Hi everyone! I'm not sure if stacking diamonds for toughness is the way to go for us monks. I know it presents a gearing challenge but One With Everything (OWE) seems way too good to ignore especially with single resists rolling that much higher than all resist. For defenses stats, why not armour or vitality? Anyways, I have attached my profile as well to add to the discussion (and for some pointers/opinions as well). I have an Eye of the Storm but this GNK seems to perform so much better right now. Maybe I'll switch back after getting the "new" Rainment. Thanks in advance for any input!
So wait, I should ditch diamonds for the AR and put in what +vit? Emeralds? With the new crafting system it's going to be a LOT easier to craft things with secondary bonuses that we want
